Knin Croatia

Knin - city of the Croatian kings | Pointers Travel DMC | Croatia | Kroatien

Knin, the city of Croatian Kings. Knin is located at the crossroads of important roads between the interior and the sea and because of that, Knin is known as the Gates of Dalmatia. The name City of Croatian Kings reaches out to the time when Croatian king Zvonimir ruled the Croatian kingdom from his capital Knin.

Knin has been home to Croatians since the 7th century A.D. Past inhabitants of this area built their first fortified settlement on Spas hill. Even though Croatians arrived in these parts in the 7th century, it wasn't until the 9th century that they formed a Croatian duchy (kneževina) between the rivers Zrmanja and Cetina. This early feudal Croatian duchy was the first of its kind in the Slavic south. Ninia (now Knin) was declared as the capital of the duchy.

Many Croatian dukes and kings held lands in or around Knin as witnessed by numerous archaeological evidence from the medieval era. In the numerous churches built during that time, archaeologists found stone inscriptions with the names of dukes Trpimir and Mutimir and Kings Svetoslav and Držislav. In the Knin capital one can find the first ethnic and political mention of Croatia as a state: Dvx Chroatorvm (lat. Duke of Croatia).

During the reign of Petar Krešimir IV. Knin diocese was formed and its bishop bore the title of Croatian bishop (lat. eppiscopus chroatensis) with its seat in the church of Saint Mary near Knin Kastel. Croatian bishop held many lands and was very powerful and influential. He was king chancellor and the religious head of all Croatian Christians.

Knin's Golden Age was during the reign of king Dmitar Zvonimir (1074 - 1088). He declared Knin the capital of his kingdom and is the only Croatian king to be crowned by the Pope, that is his emissary, Gebizon.

From the 12th century, when Croatia entered into state union with Hungary, Knin lost its title of the royal city but remained an important administrative and military center where kings second in command, ban, had his seat.
Flash forward to the 20th century.
In August 1990, Serbian radicals and extremists rose in armed rebellion against the Republic of Croatia and created a temporary state with Knin as its capital. In the military operation Storm (Oluja) Croatian Army, under the command of the first Croatian president Franjo Tuđman liberated Knin on August 5th, 1995 and returns Knin to Croatia, dissolving the temporary state of Serbian Krajina.

The day on which Knin was liberated is celebrated as Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and the Day of Croatian Defenders (Cro: Dan pobjede i Domovinske zahvalnosti i Dan hrvatskih branitelja) and the commemoration is held in Knin every year with the presence of the heads of government.

Things to do in this hidden town are numerous. From hiking the tallest mountain in Croatia to visiting one of the oldest fortresses of the Venetians. When in Knin make sure to visit the Waterfall Krčić and Šarena Lakes.

Knin is also the home of the largest Croatian church: Church of Our Lady of the Great Croatian Baptismal Vow (in Croatian - Crkva Gospe Velikog Hrvatskog Krsnog Zavjeta). Other than being the largest, this church is also one of the most beautiful, as evidenced by the European Property Award handed in 2016 to one of the architects of this religious masterpiece, Ante Vrban.

Knin fun facts:
- The source of Krka River is near Knin
- The highest Croatian mountain, Dinara is only 15 kilometers away from Knin.
- Knin was founded and developed as a fortification on Spas hill.
- 10th-century medieval fortress can be found west of Knin
- Knin fortress is located 345 meters above sea level and 100 meters above Knin.

Add this point when traveling through Croatia, you can't miss this.

Since its War of Independence in the late 1990s, Balkan Croatia has become one of Europe's top tourist destinations. Croatia has mediaeval cities and historic ruins like much of Europe, but its Plitvice Lakes, Adriatic coastlines, and beautiful islands make it stand out. Dubrovnik's mediaeval old town jutting into the water makes it Croatia's tourism darling. Split, where Roman emperor Diocletian constructed a little palace about 1700 years ago, is north along the shore. Zagreb's neoclassical buildings and Krka National Park hikes await you inland. Use this list of Croatia's top attractions to plan your vacation to this stunning European location.

10. Krka National Park.

Pula is full of attractions. The 1st-century Roman amphitheater is the city's main attraction. The Arena is the world's largest and best-preserved amphitheater.

6. Zadar.
Tourists will visit a three-thousand-year-old city on a scenic shoreline. On Croatia's northern Dalmatian Coast is Zadar. It is the perfect vacation spot because it has lots to do without the crowds. The city's Old Town is walkable. Roman ruins, mediaeval buildings, and antique churches are great sights in the historic district.

Split attracts tourists with its beautiful scenery, restaurants, and nightlife. The bustling metropolis also connects several Adriatic islands.

3. Plitvice National Park.
The Plitvice National Park contains numerous spectacular lakes, waterfalls, and a thick forest, making it one of the most stunning natural wonders in Croatia and all of Europe. The 16 interconnected lakes that are separated into upper and lower clusters are the park's most remarkable features.

Knin fortress, Croatia

Knin Fortress. Croatia 2010
Knin Fortress (Croatian: Kninska tvrđava) is located near the tallest mountain in Croatia, Dinara, and near the source of the river Krka. It is the second largest fortress in Croatia and most significant defensive stronghold, and a historical town in the Šibenik-Knin County in the Dalmatian Hinterland. The construction of the fortress started as early as 9th century, while the current state was brought up in 17th and 18th centuries. It reached its peak during the reign of Demetrius Zvonimir, King of Croatia from 1076, as it served as a political center of the Croatian Kingdom under him.

Primošten Croatia

Primošten is a town and municipality located in the Šibenik-Knin County of Croatia. It is situated on the Adriatic coast, about 35 kilometers south of the city of Šibenik. The town is known for its picturesque Old Town, which is situated on a small island connected to the mainland by a bridge. The island is surrounded by a stone wall and is home to several churches, including the Church of St. George, which dates back to the 15th century. Primošten is also known for its beaches, particularly the beach at Raduča, which is considered one of the best beaches in Croatia. The town is a popular tourist destination and attracts visitors from all over the world, especially during the summer months.

Frequent rains have filled some of the waterfalls, which usually become smaller and sometimes even dry up during the warmer part of the year. One of them is the 22-meter high Krčić Waterfall near Knin, also known as Topoljski buk or Veliki buk. It is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Croatia, especially during the rainy season, when Krčić is particularly impressive. Entrance to the waterfall is free, and it is a great place to visit if you are heading to Šibenik-Knin County.

KROATIEN mit dem Auto | Die beeindruckende Festung von Knin | #vlog 9

#kroatien #landrover #reisen #travel #roadtrip #vlog #abenteuer #croatia #fortress #festung
