Today we would like to show you some places that are rarely visited by an average tourist. The border zone between Tajikistan and Afghanistan, where the river Panj leads from Tajikistan to Afghanistan. Historically, this river divides two countries here and, one may say, two different worlds.
Panj translates from Tajik as number: Five. This river is formed at the confluence of the Pamir and Vakhandarya rivers. The confluence of the Panj with the Vakhsh River forms one of the longest and most full-flowing rivers in Central Asia - the Amu Darya.
The height of the source of the Panj is 2817 m above the sea level. The river flows between Tajikistan on the right bank and Afghanistan on the left.
The length of the Panj is 921 km and the basin area is 114,000 km². The average water flow is 1,000 m³/sec. Water from the river is used mainly for irrigation in both countries.
Khorog is the administrative centre of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast.
It is located in the southwestern part of the province and borders Afghanistan in the West. It is 525km from Khorogh to Dushanbe.
Khorog is the tourist centre of the Pamirs. Many tourist routes begin here. Tourists from around the world, year after year, come here to see the unique nature, mountains covered with eternal snow, Lake Sarez and other beauties of the Pamirs.
The town is situated at an altitude of 2200 m above sea level. It is one of the highest cities in the former Soviet Union and the highest city in Tajikistan.
The climate in Khorog is semi-arid. During the year, there is a small amount of precipitation. The average annual temperature here is 9.3°C.
Khorog is an important regional centre for commerce, transport and education. The town's educational institutions include: Khorog State University, a branch of International University of Central Asia, and the Aga Khan Foundation Lyceum.
The strategically important Pamir road passes through Khorog, connecting it to Dushanbe and Kyrgyz Osh.
There is a road that connects the city to China via the Kulma-Karakorum Pass. It provides the main flow of imports into the town. The Aga Khan Foundation has built five bridges here on rivers Panj, Ishkashim, Shugnan, Vanj and Darvaz.
The population of Khorog is more than 30,000 thousand people.
The Pamir languages spoken by the local population belong to the south-eastern groups of the Iranian branch of the Indo-European family of languages. There are differences from Tajik, as it belongs to the southwestern group of Iranian languages.
By the way, on the eastern outskirts of the city you may find the Pamir Botanical Garden. It is the highest in the CIS (2,320m) and the second highest in the world after the Nepalese. On the territory of the botanical garden one can see more than 4 thousand species of plants from all over the world.
Kalai-Khumb is the centre of the Darvaz district in Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. The name translates as: Fortress on the Khumb River.
This village is located 1200m above the sea level. It is 368km from Dushanbe and borders Afghanistan.
It is 235km from Khorog to Qalai Khumb. It has a population of over 2,500 people.
According to historical records, Qalai Khumb was founded in 15th century as a fortress. It was the capital of the independent shahdom of Darvaz until 1878.
It was an outpost on the Pamir border where the eastern frontier of the Timurid Empire was guarded.
But despite all the hardships on the way, the landscape, with its high mountains and powerful stream of the Panj River, is very impressive. From here you can see the life of the Afghans on the other side of the river and wish us all: peaceful skies over our heads!

Khorog Bazaar and Kivekas Hotel - Tajikistan 4K Travel Channel
On entering Khorog, a series of buildings that communicate a sense of official character line the road. They are banks, schools, and administration buildings, partly from the government.We stay in the Kivekas Hotel which is in middle of the town, directly at the Gunt River, a tributary of the Panj river. A pedestrian bridge next to the hotel leads across the river. After 2 days mainly in the car, we enjoy an almost car-free day.
Today, a visit to the Khorog Bazaar is on our agenda. It's all pretty lively, as the bazaar offers all the items and food necessary for daily life. We especially like the colorful oriental fabrics and carpets. But also the variety of fruits, household goods, and jewelry make the visit interesting. People are friendly and you easily get into a conversation with them. Yet, mastering the Russian language would be very helpful.
Through the well-kept central park, we go to the Restaurant Chorbogh, which also lies at the riverbank. On the spacious terrace you can eat well and watch life on the river. Some daredevils climb into the water and drift downstream. This does not look harmless at all.
We meet a group of sports enthusiasts in the restaurant. The men in the green T-shirts are from South Tyrol. They are from Bike Lenin. They cycle 1000 km in 4 weeks and in addition, they climb a 7000 m high mountain, the Mount Lenin.
The other two with the gray T-shirts started in Berlin and cycled here together. One of them leaves for Kazakhstan in 5 months, the other in 6 months for China.
All these athletes have our deep respect for the performance they achieve.
During another small walk through the town, we arrive at a place which is full of busts of Tajik national heroes. On the opposite side is the State University, where our guide had studied.
After dark, Eithne, our Irish fellow traveler from Dubai, draws our attention to a poster that she discovered in the afternoon. It shows the model of an opera that is emerging here. Well, we're a bit surprised, because we would not have expected an opera here.

Bei der Einfahrt in Khorog ist die Straße von einer Reihe von Gebäuden gesäumt, die einen offiziellen Charakter ausstrahlen. Es sind Banken, Schulen und Verwaltungsgebäude, teilweise von der Regierung.
Wir sind im Kivekas Hotel untergebracht, das direkt in der Stadtmitte am Gunt, einem Nebenfluss des Pandsch liegt. Neben dem Hotel führt eine Fußgängerbrücke über den Fluss. Nach 2 Tagen ständig im Auto, genießen wir einen fast autofreien Tag.
Heute steht ein Besuch des Khorog Basars auf dem Programm. Es geht hier lebhaft zu, da der Basar alle Artikel und Lebensmittel bietet, die für das tägliche Leben notwendig sind. Uns gefallen besonders die farbenfrohen orientalischen Stoffe und Teppiche. Aber auch die Vielzahl an Obst, Haushaltswaren und Schmuck machen den Besuch interessant. Die Menschen sind freundlich und man kommt mit ihnen leicht ins Gespräch. Die Beherrschung der russischen Sprache wäre allerdings sehr hilfreich.
Durch den gepflegten zentralen Park gehen wir zum Restaurant Chorbogh, das ebenfalls direkt am Flussufer liegt. Auf der ausladenden Terrasse kann man gut essen und dabei das Leben am Fluss beobachten. Einige Wagemutige steigen ins Wasser und lassen sich flussabwärts treiben. Das sieht nicht gerade ungefährlich aus.
Hier treffen wir auf eine Gruppe Sportbegeisterter. Die Männer in den grünen T-Shirts stammen aus Südtirol. Sie nennen sich Bike Lenin und sind unter diesem Namen auch in Facebook zu finden. In 4 Wochen fahren sie mit dem Fahrrad 1000 km und besteigen nebenher noch einen 7000 m hohen Berg, den Mount Lenin.
Die beiden Anderen mit den grauen T-Shirts sind in Berlin gestartet und gemeinsam hierher geradelt. Einer der beiden fährt in 5 Monaten nach Kasachstan, der andere in 6 Monaten nach China.
Allen diesen Sportler gehört unsere Hochachtung für die Leistungen, die sie erbringen.
Bei einem weiteren kleinen Rundgang durch die Stadt treffen wir auf einen Platz, der voll von Büsten von Tadschikischen Nationalhelden ist. Gegenüber ist die State University, an der unser Guide studiert hat. Bereits nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit macht uns Eithne, unsere Mitreisende Irin aus Dubai auf ein Plakat aufmerksam, das sie bereits am Nachmittag entdeckt hat. Es zeigt das Model einer Oper, die gerade hier entsteht. Nun wundern wir uns doch etwas, denn eine Oper hätten wir hier nicht vermutet.

Tajikistan (/tɑːˈdʒiːkɪstɑːn/ (About this soundlisten), /tə-, tæ-/; Tajik: Тоҷикистон [tɔdʒikisˈtɔn]), officially the Republic of Tajikistan (Tajik: Ҷумҳурии Тоҷикистон, Jumhurii Tojikiston) is a mountainous, landlocked country in Central Asia with an area of 143,100 km2 (55,300 sq mi)[5][6][7] and an estimated population of 9,275,828 people.[8] It is bordered by Afghanistan to the south, Uzbekistan to the west, Kyrgyzstan to the north, and China to the east. The traditional homelands of the Tajik people include present-day Tajikistan as well as parts of Afghanistan and Uzbekistan.
The territory that now constitutes Tajikistan was previously home to several ancient cultures, including the city of Sarazm[14] of the Neolithic and the Bronze Age, and was later home to kingdoms ruled by people of different faiths and cultures, including the Oxus civilisation, Andronovo culture, Buddhism, Nestorian Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Manichaeism and Islam. The area has been ruled by numerous empires and dynasties, including the Achaemenid Empire, Sasanian Empire, Hephthalite Empire, Samanid Empire, Mongol Empire, Timurid dynasty, the Khanate of Bukhara, the Russian Empire, and subsequently the Soviet Union. Within the Soviet Union, the country's modern borders were drawn when it was part of Uzbekistan as an autonomous republic before becoming a full-fledged Soviet republic in 1929.[15]
On 9 September 1991, Tajikistan became an independent sovereign nation when the Soviet Union disintegrated. A civil war was fought almost immediately after independence, lasting from 1992 to 1997. Since the end of the war, newly established political stability and foreign aid have allowed the country's economy to grow. Like all other Central Asian neighbouring states, the country, led by President Emomali Rahmon since 1994, has been criticised by a number of non-governmental organizations for authoritarian leadership, lack of religious freedom, corruption and widespread violations of human rights.
Tajikistan is a presidential republic consisting of four provinces. Most of Tajikistan's population belongs to the Tajik ethnic group,[16] who speak Tajik (a dialect of Persian). Russian is used as the inter-ethnic language. While the state is constitutionally secular, Islam is practiced by 98% of the population. In the Gorno-Badakhshan Oblast of Tajikistan, despite its sparse population, there is large linguistic diversity where Rushani, Shughni, Ishkashimi, Wakhi and Tajik are some of the languages spoken. Mountains cover more than 90% of the country. It has a transition economy that is highly dependent on remittances, aluminium and cotton production. Tajikistan is a member of the United Nations, CIS, OSCE, OIC, ECO, SCO and CSTO as well as an NATO PfP partner.

Tajik Qurutub and Plov | My Food Tour of Tajikistan
In this video, I will be taking you on a food tour of Tajisktan. Tajikstan is a beautiful country with amazing food and part of that amazing food is Tajik Qurutub and Plov. Tajik Qurutob is a classic dish from Tajikistan. It is a delicious, creamy yogurt-based soup, made with bulgur and a variety of herbs and spices. Qurutob is usually served with plov, a traditional Tajik rice dish. Plov is made with carrots, onion, garlic, and meat and is cooked in a delicious broth. Tajik Qurutob and plov are both savory and comforting dishes that are perfect for a cozy meal. The Tajik Qurutob is creamy and flavorful, while the plov is hearty and flavorful. Together, Tajik Qurutob and plov make a delicious and satisfying meal that is sure to please. I will be sharing more food as well and showing you around.

Botanical Garden in Khorog - Tajikistan 4K Travel Channel
The Botanical Garden in Khorog, also referred to as Pamir Botanical Gardens lies on a ridge above the town. It enjoys an excellent reputation among professional audiences. The Khorog Botanical Garden is the second highest botanical garden in the world.
From here you have a beautiful view of the town. In 2012, violence between government forces and opposition erupted in the town. The trigger was the murder of a secret service general. Snipers opened the rifle fire on the town from the surrounding slopes. The background of the disturbances was probably the attempts to gain control of illegal border trade. The riots stopped with the visit of the president Emomali Rahmon.
On occasion of this visit, one set up a magnificent villa with its own staff house at the Botanical Garden. The large building with a golden dome in the valley served as a restaurant, exclusively for the president. All these buildings have been used only once and are empty since then. It is said that there are hundreds of such buildings in the country, which we are unable to verify.
The garden may house a large variety of plants, with individual pavilions in between. Otherwise, it conveys a little unkempt impression. An elderly woman who even spoke some English tells us that she comes here to collect chestnuts.
At the entrance, we enjoy again the view of the city. On the opposite side of the valley, we notice a large yellow-red complex. It is Aga Khan University and the Aga Khan University Hospital. The university is part of the University of Central Asia, UCA. The University of Central Asia was founded in 2000 by the Presidents of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Kazakhstan, together with His Highness Aga Khan, as a private, non-profit university. The three campuses are located along the historic Silk Road, in Naryn Kyrgyzstan, Khorog Tajikistan, and Tekeli Kazakhstan.
Many Aga Khan institutions are active in Khorog. The Aga Khan Bank is the only bank that still conducts normal business operations. An elderly gentleman tells us that for nearly three months, practically all the other banks have stopped doing business and don't dispense money. When asked how normal business life works then he answers: If you do not have money, you do not need a bank. He laughs at these words.
We drive to a second viewpoint. On the way, a wedding convoy approaches us.

Der Botanische Garten in Khorog liegt erhöht über der Stadt an einem Bergrücken. Unter Fachpublikum genießt der Botanische Garten einen hervorragenden Ruf. Es ist der zweithöchste botanische Garten der Welt.
Von hier aus hat man eine wunderschönen Ausblick auf die Stadt. 2012 kam es in der Stadt zu Gefechten zwischen Regierungstruppen und Oppositionellen. Auslöser war die Ermordung eines Geheimdienstgenerals. Scharfschützen belegten die Stadt von den umliegenden Hängen mit Gewehrfeuer. Hintergrund der Unruhen waren vermutlich die Versuche die Kontrolle über illegale Grenzgeschäfte zu erlangen. Ruhe kehrte erst mit dem Besuch des Präsidenten Emomalij Rahmon ein.
Zu diesem Zweck wurde am Botanischen Garten eine herrliche Villa mit eigenem Personalhaus errichtet, sowie im Tal ein großes Gebäude mit goldener Kuppel, das als Restaurant diente. Alle diese Gebäude wurden nur einmal benutzt und stehen seither leer. Angeblich gibt es im Land hunderte solcher Gebäude, was von uns aber nicht überprüft werden kann.
Der Garten mag eine große Vielfalt an Pflanzen beherbergen, dazwischen sind einzelne Pavillons errichtet worden. Ansonsten macht er aber doch einen etwas ungepflegten Eindruck. Eine ältere Frau, die sogar etwas Englisch sprach erzählt uns, dass sie hierher kommt um Kastanien zu sammeln.
Am Eingang genießen wir nochmals den Ausblick auf die Stadt. Auf der gegenüber liegenden Talseite fällt uns ein großer gelb-roter Komplex auf. Es ist die Aga Khan Universität und das Aga Khan Universitätskrankenhaus. Die Universität ist Teil der Universität von Zentralasien. Die Universität von Zentralasien, UCA wurde im Jahre 2000 von den Präsidenten Kirgisistans, Tadschikistans und Kasachstans zusammen mit seiner Hoheit Aga Khan als private, nicht gewinnbringende Universität gegründet. Alle Standorte liegen entlang der historischen Seidenstraße, in Naryn Kirgisitan, Khorog Tadschikistan und Tekeli Kasachstan.
Eine Reihe von Aga Khan Institutionen sind in Khorog aktiv. So ist die Aga Khan Bank die einzige Bank, die noch normalen Geschäftsbetrieb hat. Ein ältere Herr erzählt uns, dass seit drei Monaten praktisch alle übrigen Banken den Geschäftsbetrieb eingestellt hätten und kein Geld mehr auszahlen. Auf die Frage, wie dann das normale Geschäftsleben funktioniert antwortet er: „Wer kein Geld hat, braucht auch keine Bank“. Bei diesen Worten lacht er.
Wir fahren zu einem zweiten Aussichtspunkt auf die Stadt. Hier kommt uns ein fröhlicher Hochzeitskonvoi entgegen.
