The southeast Asian country of Laos is a hidden gem among its more popular neighbors of China, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Its rich cultural diversity comes from the 49 ethnic groups that influence the food, arts, customs and festivals in the country.
The country is divided into north, central and southern regions, each with lush landscapes and an inviting atmosphere. The unspoiled jungle habitat of Laos means you might see an elephant strolling on your way to breakfast or monks walking the roadways.
The best experiences in Laos are the spontaneous ones that you have by interacting with the locals and witnessing daily life in the country. You can also explore the many natural, cultural and historical sites, as well as several UNESCO World Heritage sites.

10 Things To Do in Vientiane, Laos on your VACATION!

✅Best-Selling travel gear
😃Booking.com Deals

Vientiane is the capital city of Laos but many visitors here say that it feels more like a small village than a bustling central hub. Vientiane has a relaxed and serene vibe to it and you will find a number of attractions here that make it the perfect place to spend a few days before you head off to other places around the country.

Welcome to ThingsToDo Channel, today we’re going to list 10 things to do in Vientiane.

Explore the Lao Textile Museum.

This small museum used to be privately owned by a local family who also own the Kanchana Boutique. Nowadays however it has morphed to become one of the key cultural sights in Vientiane and is located around a gorgeous little Laotian compound. Here you will find a typical wooden house which is filled with ancient weaving tools and looms, and there are also antique textiles here that represent the various ethnic groups in Laos. If you want to get hands-on them you can also take a textile painting class.

Go on a cycling tour.

Bicycle touring around Vientiane has become increasingly popular in recent years and you can now sign up for a tour with several companies like Vientiane ByCycle. You can usually opt for half-day or full-day tours and a local tour guide will take you around the city to out of the way spots such as villages, temples, and markets.

Check out the National Ethnic Cultural Park.

The National Ethnic Cultural Park is on the outskirts of Vientiane and is known for having models of traditional houses that represent all the different ethnic groups in Laos. You can tour the different houses at the park as well as check out some statues of dinosaurs and visit the small zoo here.

Go for a massage.

Laos is known for its local massage technique which uses herbal sauna and steam rooms. Local plants and herbs are boiled in a traditional Laotian bathhouse in a sealed room to create a steamy environment and this is then followed by a relaxing massage.

Admire Wat Si Saket.

Wat Si Saket has the claim to fame of being the only surviving temple in Laos from before the invasion of Siam in 1828. Unfortunately, much of the city was razed to the ground at this time, but the temple managed to avoid being demolished and you can come here to check out the 5,000 sculptures of the Buddha for which it is also famous.

Discover Wat Si Muang.

Wat Si Muang is one of the most popular temples in Vientiane and is a great place to visit if you want to see some of the finest Laotian Buddhist design work in the country.

Learn some history at the Lao National Museum.

If you want to know more about the history and culture of Laos, then you need to head to the Lao National Museum, also sometimes referred to simply as The National Museum. The museum is actually housed inside a building that was constructed during the French colonial period and you will find a huge number of interesting exhibits on sale here.

Eat at Vientiane Night Market.

Vientiane Night Market is located along the scenic waterfront in the city. The market usually gets going around sunset and you can come here to buy a range of items like clothes, textiles, accessories, handicrafts, paintings and myriad souvenirs.

Stroll around Patuxai Victory Monument.

Patuxai Victory Monument is one of the best-known landmarks in Vientiane and was designed to resemble the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. It is however also carved with symbols of Hindu Gods and has an additional five towers which resemble traditional Laotian buildings making this something of an East meets West kind of attraction. The monument is part of the wider Patuxai Park and this is a great place to come if you want to go for a serene walk at sunset. You can also take in the views across Vientiane from the top of the Patuxai Victory Monument either by climbing a set of stairs to the viewing platform or using an elevator.

Xieng Khuan.

Xieng Khuan is also known as Buddha Park and is some 25 kilometers outside Vientiane. As you would guess from the name, it is known for having more than 200 religious statues which are scattered all over the lush grounds. The piece de resistance here is a sculpture of a reclining Buddha which is some 40 meters high and the park was the brainchild of a monk who designed the area in 1958 and who was interested in both Hindu and Buddhist sculpture, which is why you will find a mix of different influences here. As you walk around to make sure to look out for the sculpture of Indra who is atop a three-headed elephant and who is considered to be the king of the gods in Hinduism.

CONTENT: This is a short 4K travel video about KONG LOR CAVE in KHAMMOUANE PROVINCE, LAOS.

The following is a brief description of this sightseeing attraction:

ABOUT: A trip through Kong Lor Cave is one of the highlights of travel in Laos, and one of the best cave tours in the region. It’s also one of the regions longest fully traversable cave rivers; the distance from the downstream to upstream entrance is 7.5 km. The traverse is completed in motorised, flat bottomed, long tail boats (similar to the Thai long tails but with a shallower draft).

TOUR FEES: These must be purchased at the office at the main gate (approx. 500 meters from the cave entrance) and presented to the ticket kiosk next to the lagoon. As of February 2020, the tour price is approximately US 8 dollars per person with a minimum of two paying customers per boat. Life jackets are included in the tour price. Headlamps can be hired at the lagoon kiosk for 5000 LAK. The operating times for the boat trip are 08.00 – 17.00, daily.

TOUR DURATION: The round trip will take approx. 2.5 hours (this also includes the stop at the formations plateau). For safety, the maximum number of passengers per boat, is three. Life jackets must be worn at all times while in the boat. If you don’t have your own flashlight it’s highly recommended you rent a headlamp. The cave has a large internal dimension and can be very dark without a light.

THE HIGHLIGHT: After traveling approximately 1 km into the depths of the cave, sightseers can alight at an underground beach where the tunnel opens up into a massive void (the cave ceiling is 40 meters above the river level). This is probably the most impressive section of the cave. There is a wide plateau (approx. 300 meters long and 50 meters wide) which rises 20 meters above the river. For viewing safety a cement trail has been put in place to provide sure footing as you work your way across the plateau. Handrails and barriers are also in place to keep sightseers at a distance from the fragile speleotherm. The trail eventually leads back down to the river, on a solid stairway, where sightseers can re-join there boats for the continuation of the tour.

THE UPSTREAM SIDE: From the formations plateau it’s another 6.5 km to the upstream entrance (exit point). As the boat approaches the exit point the glow of daylight penetrates well into the cave. After exiting the cave the boat continues on to a lost world, beyond the upstream entrance. A place where jungle clad, jagged peaks encroach on the river and groups of water buffaloes graze along its banks. Approx. 1 km from the upstream entrance, there’s a landing point where passengers can alight and stretch their legs around the nearby encampment.

THE RETURN RUN: After relaxing for 20 – 30 minutes at the encampment, sightseers on the standard tour will re-join the boat for the 45 minute run back through the cave. Once again the world of daylight is left behind as one enters the darkened, primordial world of Kong Lor Cave; an experience which is a highlight of a tour through Laos and perhaps, even South East Asia.

Muang Khong 4000 Islands in Champasak, Laos 🇱🇦 #Laos

Want to see an ★ADORABLE★ town on the Mekong down south of Pakse Laos?

Muang Khong 4000 Islands in Champasak, Laos on Mekong River - BeautyLovesTech

During our Southern travels in Laos we stopped to visit family, about 80 miles (130km) South of Pakse, Laos. 500 miles (800km) South of Vientiane, Laos. In the Champasak province.

We had to cross the Mekong River on a car ferry. The dirt roads down to the ferry were steep, soft and quite scary. I was driving my sister-in-law's little car and I had to tell her there were no promises it wouldn't accidentally end up in the river :) They place 2 boards from the dirt to the ferry, and you're suppose to carefully drive across them to board the ferry (without falling off the boards and ruining your car). I did my best, and I guess I was lucky. The family was having a birthday party and it seemed like the whole town showed up to celebrate and have fun watching the band play. On the main street there was a night market with food and gifts and it was quite nice to see.

We stayed at a hotel a couple steps from the party house. It was a little more quiet (the party went on until the morning) when we decided to leave and go to sleep.

Muang Khong is quiet small, but cute town on the east side of Don Khong Island, which is the largest island in the Si Phan Don archipelago located in the Mekong River, Khong District, Champasak Province, southern Laos.

Muang Khong 4000 Islands in Champasak, Laos on Mekong River

7 THINGS TO DO - 4000 ISLANDS | Don Det & Don Khon, Laos

After crossing the border from Cambodia, our first destination in Laos was Don Det.

Don Det is part of the 4000 Islands region of Southern Laos and is well known for it's laid back atmosphere.

We spent our short time exploring the Island of Don Det, and it's neighbouring island Don Khone.

We went to an Old French Port, Li Phi Somphamit Waterfall, Khong Yai Beach, Wat Khon Tai Temple, Khone Pa Soy, Hang Khon (where you traditionally saw Irrawaddy Dolphins). This adventure around the island saw us zip lining, climbing old tree houses, crossing very dangerous bridges, and getting bitten by red ants!

One of the poorest nations on the planet is Laos. The Lao people have little material possessions beyond their food, but their Buddhist beliefs enable them to find happiness in a simple lifestyle. Most residents reside in small rural communities close to rivers. To grow enough food, the entire family works incredibly hard. For cooking, drinking, and washing, many people who lack running water must carry water from the river to their modest wooden homes. People engage in a sport known as kataw in Laos and other Southeast Asian nations.Similar to volleyball, players must kick or force a tiny hollow ball made of woven bamboo over a high net instead of using their hands.Rhinoceros-beetle wrestling is a popular sport among the Lao. The longest-standing beetle is the subject of wagers.1. Vientiane Vientiane, the capital of Laos, was once a trading post for the French colonists. Both beautiful, ornate Buddhist temples and a wealth of French architecture can be found in this city. The largest city in the nation, it still retains its laid-back and amiable vibe. Do not skip a trip to That Luang, also referred to as The Great Stupa, one of Laos' most revered sites. With a central stupa standing 148 feet tall and dating back to the 16th century, this enormous golden temple is astounding. The Patuxai Victory Monument is another distinctive landmark of this city. Similar in size to France's Arc de Triomphe, this enormous arch is intricately carved with representations of Hindu gods and has towers in the Laotian style on top.2. Vang Vieng It feels like entering a complete sanctuary when traveling to the town of Vang Vieng in the north. Large limestone mountains and vividly green rice paddies surround this tiny town. Backpackers would travel here from far and wide to party in this once-famous party town while floating down the Nam Song River in inner tubes and stopping at the bars that lined the river's banks. But now that the party scene has been banned by the government, Vang Vieng is the ideal location to explore and enjoy many river activities. Given that this is one of the most picturesque settings you can imagine, I would definitely spend the day floating down the river. The Blue Lagoon is another location nearby that's worth visiting. This picture-perfect lagoon has platforms to jump off of and rope swings throughout. It is a seductive shade of blue.3. Luang Prabang The next suggested stop on your trip to this wonderful country is Luang Prabang. Since it is so full of history, culture, and natural beauty, the city itself is recognized as a Unesco World Heritage Site. The Kuang Si Waterfalls are not far from town. One of a kind oasis is tucked away in the middle of the jungle. Swim in the turquoise blue pools beneath these magnificent multi-tiered waterfalls. Finally, a Black Bear Rescue Center is situated halfway between the park's entrance and the waterfalls. This already incredible excursion was made even better by getting to see these sleeping bears up close. It is also essential to go to the Mount Phousi Temple. Although visiting Wat Chom Si's seven-tiered golden pagoda will require you to ascend more than 300 steps, the effort will be well worth it. You should not miss the panoramic views of Luang Prabang in addition to the temple.4. Si Phan Don A group of islands in the delta of the Mekong River known as Si Phan Don or the 4000 Islands are located in southern Laos. The majority of the islands are tiny and uninhabited. The majority of the residents are fishermen who take advantage of the delta's nutrient-rich waters for their livelihood. Don Det and Don Khong islands are the biggest and most well-liked islands. Here you can find lodging for tourists, eateries, and shops. With its hostels and bars, Don Det is more of a destination for travelers than Don Khong. The islands have a very laid-back and tranquil atmosphere. Pedaling past paddy fields, towns, and stunning waterfalls, you can easily explore the islands on a bicycle. Perhaps you'll even see some cute water dolphins here!5. Pakse Pakse is one of the larger towns in the country's center. People who are going to or coming from the 4000 islands frequently stop there for a layover. However, Pakse has a lot more to offer than just a place to stay while waiting for a ride. Green fields and mountains surround Pakse, which is situated between the Mekong and the Se Don Rivers. Right after the rainy season, when the entire country turns a vivid shade of green, the area around Pakse is stunning. The city is the ideal starting point for exploring the well-known Bolaven Plateau, despite having few sights or tourist attractions.
