[4K] Kayenta, Arizona - Navajo Nation - Tour & Drive Thru
Kayenta (Navajo: Tó Dínéeshzheeʼ) is a U.S. census-designated place (CDP) which is part of the Navajo Nation and is in Navajo County, Arizona, United States. The population was 5,189 at the 2010 census. Kayenta is located 25 miles (40 km) south of Monument Valley and contains a number of hotels and motels which serve visitors to Monument Valley. Like other places on the Navajo Nation, it is illegal to serve alcohol. Arizona does not observe Daylight Time; however, the Navajo reservation does.
Kayenta Township is the only municipal-style government on the Navajo Nation. It is regarded as a political sub-division of the Navajo Nation. It is managed by a five-member elected town board, which hires the township manager.
Kayenta is the name for the Chapter, as well as the township. Kayenta Chapter (a political division within the Navajo Nation that is analogous to a county within a state) encompasses land in both Utah and Arizona. Thus, the Navajo Nation's census figures for Kayenta Chapter are significantly different from those of Kayenta proper.

With a dazzling array of amazing sights, Arizona’s desert climate is home to some astounding geological formations and canyons that are well worth exploring. The Grand Canyon, for example, is one of the United States’ most famous sights, while the impressive Monument Valley certainly gives it a run for its money. With Indian reservations making up almost a quarter of Arizona’s area, there are lots of interesting archaeological, historical and cultural sites relating to Native American culture for tourists to enjoy. The state cities are fun and friendly places to stop by and there is some great nightlife to boot. Here’s a look at the best places to visit in Arizona:

Monument Valley Travel Guide (USA) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Monument Valley in The USA.
For many years Monument Valley and its distinctive mesas in the northern part of Arizona have become one of the most famous natural landmarks in the United States. The region was populated many thousands of years ago by the Native American Indians and there are traces of the Anasazi Tribe, an ancient and once highly developed culture. The characteristic colour of the terrain is mainly to due to ferrous oxide and occasionally black veins of manganese oxide can also be seen in the rock. However, Monument Valley's main feature is the stunning beauty of its various spectacular rock needles and towers. For the local Navajo Indians the gigantic columns mean more than just picturesque scenery as they have a close and sacred relationship with the landscape of their forefathers. Thus Monument Valley is much more than a world famous nature park: the region is also greatly valued as a colourful focal point of ancient Native American Indian culture and tradition.

US 163 through Monument Valley, Forrest Gump Hill - Kayenta to Mexican Hat Scenic Drive in 4K
Check this one off your bucket list! You've probably wanted to drive through Monument Valley ever since seeing it featured prominently in the movie Forrest Gump (this is where Forrest decided to stop running). But it's not just wild-west movie magic, Monument Valley actually exists! US 163 (poorly numbered, but we won't get into that) takes you from Kayenta, Arizona, into Utah and along the edge of Monument Valley, then on to Mexican Hat, Utah. (The actual drive around Monument Valley is on Native American land, and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have allowed me to video there without paying an exorbitant fee). Since the best view of Forrest Gump Hill (as it really is called!) requires a u-turn, so I've included that part too!
I made this trip in November 2022.

Experience Monument Valley, the iconic American West. A travel guide.
Monument Valley is a wilderness area in Utah and Arizona with much of the interest centered on the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. Visitors pay an entrance fee to enter the park then can drive the Valley Drive in their own vehicle or take one of many tours on offer.
The scenery is spectacular and an overnight stay in a room at the View Hotel, in one of the cabins, or in the RV and camping park is highly recommended if you want to see more than the standard attractions. Take the opportunity to try some Navajo food while there.

Monument Valley Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Monument Valley in the United States of America.
Monument Valley is situated on the border of the North American states of Arizona and Utah in a region of magnificent freestanding sandstone rocks that tower 1000 feet above the desert.More than 200 million years ago the area was covered by ocean on the bed of which were deep deposits of mud which turned into slate and as the sea bed rose again the water drained away and cracks and fissures were formed and a vast sandstone plain was created. In the heart of the Navajo Reservation, with its magical rock formations which in the evening sun glow a burning, indelible red, it’s easy to understand why Nature played such an important part in the lives of its native inhabitants. A sacred atmosphere can be felt everywhere and the existence of ghosts is suddenly all too possible.
