Most Underrated Town in Sichuan, China: Yuantong Market Town (Near Chengdu)
Beautiful towers, bridges, churches, courtyards and guild halls along with a picturesque shorline, make Yuantong Ancient Town the most underrated ancient town in Sichuan Province. Yuantong Ancient Town (元通古镇) is located in Chongzhou (崇州), 76 miles northwest of Chengdu (成都) in Sichuan Province (West China).
What makes it underrated? Located on a wharf, it's considered one of China's four major market towns. Its Famous things to see in Yuantong Ancient Town include the Catholic Church, Luo's Courtyard, Huang Family Mansion, the Old Wharf, Yuantong Tower and Xizi Tower.

Kangding City, located in Garze Prefecture in western Sichuan, is an important town at the intersection of Sichuan and Tibet. The area I walked was the old town of Kangding. The small town is surrounded by mountains and has a river running through it. Various buildings with rich ethnic styles are scattered on both sides of the river in an orderly manner, making the place rich in plateau ethnic customs.

Sichuan-Tibet Highway, China's most popular self-driving route - Kangding to Yajiang section - 4K
National Highway G318 is a highway from Shanghai to Nyalam County, Tibet, referred to as the Shanghai-Nyalam Line. It is an ordinary highway in China and one of the horizontal lines of China's national road network. It is a national highway in East China, Central China and Southwest China. It starts from Huangpu District, Shanghai and ends at Nyalam County, Shigatse City, Tibet Autonomous Region. The total length is 5,476 kilometers, passing through eight provincial administrative regions including Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Hubei, Chongqing, Sichuan and Tibet.
The 318 self-driving tour that people often talk about actually refers to the highway from Kangding City, Sichuan Province to Lhasa City, Tibet Autonomous Region, with a total length of about 1,700 kilometers. This journey crosses a variety of landforms such as plateaus, canyons, rivers, grasslands, glaciers and forests, and the scenery is beautiful. In particular, the more than ten mountains with an altitude of more than 4,000 meters that are crossed on the way, as well as the three major rivers of Jinsha River, Nujiang River and Lancang River, bring a shocking visual feast to travelers.
The predecessor of this section of National Highway 318 was the Sichuan-Tibet Highway. Its construction began in 1950 and was jointly built by the 18th Army of the People's Liberation Army and migrant workers of all ethnic groups. Along the way, it was necessary to cross many high mountains and canyons and cross uninhabited areas, which made the construction extremely difficult. But after decades of hard work, this highway was finally completed and opened to traffic, becoming an important channel connecting the mainland and Tibet. The construction of the Sichuan-Tibet Highway overcame many difficulties and demonstrated the strong will and revolutionary spirit of the Chinese people.
In recent years, with the continuous improvement of transportation infrastructure, the road conditions of National Highway 318 have been significantly improved. Many sections have been rebuilt, the road surface has become wider, and the driving has become smoother.
With the rise of tourism, more and more tourists choose to visit National Highway 318 by self-driving, cycling or even hiking. It not only drives the development of the local economy, but also promotes the exchange and dissemination of culture between western Sichuan and the Tibet Autonomous Region.
In short, National Highway 318 is a road full of challenges and charm. Whether it is natural scenery or historical culture, it is worth exploring and experiencing for every traveler.
