CHIANG RAI, THAILAND (2023) | 12 INCREDIBLE Things To Do In & Around Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai is the northernmost province in Thailand. Filled with lush hills, fine local food, an abundance of temples, and cultural sights, this is one of the country’s most fascinating regions. And although it’s located right next to the well-trodden Chiang Mai, this province doesn’t receive as many tourists. In fact, most people visit Chiang Rai as a day trip from Chiang Mai, but we recommend spending at least a few days here to fully soak in the unique culture. Chiang Rai City is the main hub to explore the hidden corners of the region from. But the city itself also has a wide variety of attractions. In this video, we highlight the best things to do inside the city of Chiang Rai as well as excursions to its surrounding area.

😴 Recommended stay - Homey Dormy Chiangrai (loved it - but better if you have a rental vehicle as it’s a bit outside the city center):
🚗 Get a rental car from Chiang Rai Airport:

12. Watch Sunset From Wat Phrathat Doi Khao Kwai

Kamphaeng Phet Night Bazaar - Thailand 2023

Kamphaeng Phet, a historical city that rivals those of Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai, is a city in the lower northern part of Thailand. The name of the city literally translates to The Wall of Diamond due to the fact that the city and its formidable fortification was used as an outpost to defend invaders from the north during Sukhothai and Ayutthaya reign in the 13th - 15th Centuries.

It has many sights to see during the day from ancient temples, military fortifications and so much more. When the sun goes down a great thing to do is to visit the night bazaar on the bank of the Ping River in downtown Kamphaeng Phet.

After a day of exploring the outdoors of Kamphaeng Phet, it is time to receive your rewards in the form of delicious street food for dinner. Kamphaeng Phet Night Bazaar is the best area for you to buy some delicious street food to enjoy.

If you get there around 6 PM you will find a bustling mix of fresh and street food market. Be sure to try things like fried dumplings, Pad Thai, Hoi Tod (fried mussels) and so much more. The market starts to close at 9 PM, giving you lots of time at this night market.

Enjoy the video!

5. Co van Kessel
The address is: Charoen Krung soi 24.

Co van Kessel bike tours and boat tours provides a refreshing alternative to the tired tourist experience. We do not battle the crowds at clichéd destinations promoted in guide books, but turn your attention to quaint local communities and charming excursions into the fascinating lifestyle and culture of real Thai people. Every day is different and every tour is a surprise as we focus not on destinations, but lose ourselves in the enchantment of the journey itself.

Co van Kessel, an innovative and adventurous Dutchman, pioneered bicycle tours in Bangkok more than 30 years ago. As a longtime resident and self-professed lover of Bangkok, he understood very well the picture of accelerated urban development (gridlocked traffic, concrete towers, and choking pollution) that has plagued the recent image of the city. He also had a hunch that this was not what Bangkok or Thailand was all about.

Making it his goal to re-discover Bangkok, Co spent thousands of hours on his mountain bike exploring the vast network of local streets, alleyways, footpaths and canals between the main urban thoroughfares. What he found, lurking behind the facade of modernization, were hidden worlds of peace and tranquility, a picture of “real” Thai life that has remained unchanged for countless decades; an identity of a city that is true to the Thai people, yet largely unknown to outsiders.

Whether it’s the colorful sights and smells of the local markets, the fascinating life of locals along the canals, or the surprising existence of bountiful green belts, Co discovered the essence of what makes Bangkok one of Asia’s most captivating cities. Since then, it has been his mission to share these discoveries with the rest of the world.

What we do:

Our mission at Co van Kessel Bangkok Tours is to provide our guests with a singularly unique travel experience in Thailand. All our tours use Co’s extensive topographical knowledge of the greater Bangkok area as well as his keen eye for the interesting to take you where nobody else can or will.

We aim not to bore you with talk, but to immerse you in an experience where your individual fascinations emerge.

Bicycles, boats, and our feet become the tools we use to gain access to the previously inaccessible, behind-the-scenes lifestyle of the Thai. Here the roots of an ancient culture will become evident in a way you never could have imagined.

The most interesting thing about Kamphaeng Phet, Thailand.

To be honest, I was quite fond of the town of Kamphaeng Phet (even if I didn't learn how to pronounce the name properly until after I left).

And lots of features of the town qualify as very interesting, particularly everything connected with the ancient Sukhothai and Ayutthaya Kingdoms.

But there was one thing that stood out above the rest. And in this video, I set out to explore it.

KAMPHAENG PHET, North Thailand (Nakhon Chum Market Area) THAILAND 4K WALK TOUR !

On this Thailand 4k walk tour I visit Nakhon Chum Market, Kamphaeng Phet. I walked there in November last year just after the rains, so flood damage is quite noticeable at the start of the walk. An interesting area of Kamphaeng Phet in North Thailand with markets and beautiful old traditional Thai houses. I hope you enjoy.

Kamphaeng Phet Fortifications - Thung Seithi Fort and More - Thailand 2023

In the glory days of the Suthothai Kingdom (mid 13th to mid 15th century), the Kingdom of Siam was centred on what is now central Thailand. Today this region is rural with the main activity cultivating rice. At that time the city of Kamphaeng Phet was an important city in the Sukhothai Kingdom. Kamphaeng guarded the south west approach to the capital city, and guarding the city was Thung Seithi Fort, located on the western approach to city of Kamphaeng Phet. The main enemy at that time was the Kingdom of Burma. The two kingdoms regularly fought over territory and workers.

The fort is now abandoned, but is in good repair. Surrounding the fort were various buildings, templed whose foundations stones have survived and less socially prestigious constructs made from more humble wood. The fort is 6 meters high, and 80 meters long, made with hard laterite. The remains of a moat can be seen around the fort.

In addition to the outside fort were other defensive positions. The city was guarded by a huge wall with fortifications inside and outside the perimeter. Modern warfare has changed but it’s fun to get a glimpse into how cities and people defended themselves in this bygone era.

Getting Smarter at the Kamphaeng Phet National Museum (Kamphaeng Phet, Thailand)

I always enjoy a museum visit, and the Kamphaeng Phet National Museum was no exception. I had a very pleasant experience, and I came away much more knowledgeable about Kamphaeng Phet and the Sukhothai Kingdom than when I went in. And that was all I needed.

Khet Nai - Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park, Inner District (Thailand)

The Inner District of Kamphaeng Phet's Historical Park is called Khet Nai. It is smaller than the Forest District but contains large and historically significant temple ruins.

The National Museum is just outside of the official park boundaries, as are the old city walls and fortifications. A visit to those could be combined with exploring the temple ruins if you have the energy.

In this video, I visit Wat Phrathat and Wat Phra Kaeo, the two main attractions in the Historical Park.

Travel┃(KAMPHAENG PHET) HISTORICAL PARK #2

- KAMPHAENG PHET HISTORICAL PARK #2 -

On holiday, I went to Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park near my place. #2 video is showing the area of the Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park Area 2.

The park is about three times the size of area 1. In Area 2, there're WAT PHRA SI IRIYABOT, WAT PHRA NON, WAT CHANG ROB, WAT AVASA YAI.

[The truth to know before going to Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park]

- The operating hours are from 8 AM to 5PM and it's recommended to visit in the morning. However, if you can endure the humidity and heat in Thailand, you probably can go during daytime.

- Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park is one of the World Heritage Site and It's divided to two sections. If you decided to go both of the sections, the cost would be 150 bat(About $ 5) and If it’s just for one place, it would be 100Bat. (About $ 3)

- You can rent the bicycles in the park and it would cost 30Bat.
(I recommend you to rent it if you did not bring your own motorcycle or bicycle)

- It took about three and a half hours to see Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park. I recommend you to go and see Area 1 first cause Area 2 is much larger than Area 1 and it would need more time to see.

The History of Kamphaeng Phet #history

Temples, Walls, and Timeless Beauty

Kamphaeng Phet is a town and province in central Thailand that has a rich history dating back to the Sukhothai period. The name Kamphaeng Phet means wall of diamonds and refers to the city walls and fortifications that protected the ancient capital of Chakangrao from invaders. The town was also an important religious centre, with many temples and monuments built of laterite and brick. Some of these historical sites are preserved in the Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns. The park showcases the distinctive architecture and art of Kamphaeng Phet, which reflects the influence of the Khmer Empire, the Sukhothai Kingdom, and the Ayutthaya Kingdom.
