Walking tour in the city center of Kajaani, Finland. Kajaani is a citylocated in the Kainuu region of Finland. It is situated in the central part of the country, about 550 kilometers north of the capital, Helsinki. Kajaani is known for its beautiful natural surroundings, with numerous lakes and forests in the surrounding area.
Some notable landmarks in and around Kajaani include the Kajaani Castle, which dates back to the 17th century and is now a museum. The Paltaniemi Church is also worth a visit, as it is one of the oldest wooden churches in Finland, dating back to the 17th century as well.

Walking around Kajaani, July 2021, Finland. Kajaani is the most populous town and the capital of the Kainuu Region of Finland. It is located southeast of Lake Oulu (Oulujärvi), which drains into the Gulf of Bothnia through the Oulu River (Oulujoki).
Kajaani was one of the cities founded in 1651 by the Swedish Governor General of Finland, Per Brahe. Its growth was fuelled by the tar industry, but it was preceded by a long history of settlements. During the Great Northern War it succumbed to Russian forces, who ruined Kajaani Castle in 1716.
In early 1833, medical doctor Elias Lönnrot, best known for compiling the Kalevala, the national epic of Finland, was appointed district physician in Kajaani and was assigned to assist in dealing with the typhoid and cholera epidemic which was raging during the 1830s.

Kajaani Vlog 9 - Riga Trip
As one of our last trips in Finland, we decided to go to Riga for a few days. To get there we had to take the 8 hr night bus from Kajaani to Helsinki, then take the ferry to Tallinn, and then on another 4 hr bus drive to Riga. We went to the zoo, wandered around town and visited some museums during an open museum night.
