Warsaw City Tour | Poland

Warsaw is the capital of Poland and, with 1.7 million inhabitants, its largest city. It is located on the Vistula River (Polish: Wis³a), roughly equidistant (350 km, 217 mi) from both the Baltic Sea (Ba³tyk) in the north and the Carpathian Mountains (Karpaty) in the south.

See in Warsaw, Poland
==================
Most of the major sightseeing attractions are located in Centrum area, which encompasses seven districts, however, the most important district for sight seeing is likely to be considered Œrَdmieœcie. The other districts all have something else to offer too, but the further from Centrum you journey, the less likely you're to find much of anything that is of any major interest, although Wilanَw's palace and Kabaty forest are interesting enough.

Itineraries
========
The Royal Road (Trakt Krَlewski) was originally a track linking the Royal Castle to the Royal Palace in Wilanَw (Pa³ac Krَlewski w Wilanowie), some 10 km farther. There are many points of interest along the route, and there's a Poster Museum (Muzeum Plakatu) in Wilanَw as well.

Museums
========
Warsaw Uprising Museum Interactive museum that documents the historic struggle of the Poles during WWII. The Uprising should have lasted only 3 days but lasted more than 2 months. The brief 3-D film that simulates flying over the destroyed city is powerful.

Center for Modern Art (Centrum Sztuki Wspَ³czesnej)

Royal Lazienki (Lazienki Krolewskie)

Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw - located only a few minutes walk from the Central Railway Station the Museum invites to step into the world of contemporary art by Polish and international artists. Guided tours every Sunday at 2 pm.

National Museum in Warsaw (Muzeum Narodowe w Warszawie)

The National Museum in Warsaw is home to over 800,000 exhibits of both Polish and worldwide art. They represent all epochs from antiquity to contemporary times, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, illustrations, photographs, numismatic items and objects of applied arts.

======Krakَw (Cracow)========

Krakَw (Cracow) is not only a historical and visual gem, it's Poland's second largest city and covers both banks of the Wisla (or Vistula) river. At the foot of the Carpathian Mountains, the metropolitan area has more than 1.4 million inhabitants if you include the surrounding communities.

See in Krakَw (Cracow), Poland
==========================

Most of the popular tourist attractions are located in the Old Town. See the separate article for complete listings.

Krakَw's historic centre, which includes the Old Town, Kazimierz and the Wawel Castle, was included as the first of its kind on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1978.

The district of Kazimierz whith its Jewish heritage is very interesting. The synagogue of Remuh, for example, was built in 1557. Although it's not so well-conserved and the entrance costs PLN5, it has a great atmosphere with its old walls and its ancient vestments. Adjacent is its cemetery created in 1511 and recently restored. The atmosphere is very melancholic there and deserves a visit.

The district of Nowa Huta was built during the Communist Era, and was made for the people working in the huge steelworks (5 times larger than the Old Town of Krakow) there. The architecture of the district is typical socialist; huge buildings surround green parks. The district now is poor, and you can touch the real uneasiness of those times there. Main station is Plac Centralny which can be reached by trams 4, 10, 16, 21, 22 and 64.

Travellers who come to Krakow often visit Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. Not many know that in Krakow there was also a Nazi concentration camp located in Podgَrze district. You can visit Schindler's Factory there.

Warsaw Poland - Tour Of A Great City And What To Do

Visit for much, much more about the City Of Warsaw Poland.

That page as well as the parent site cover many topics related to travel and tourism in Warsaw.

It tells you about shopping, things to do, places to eat and all about getting around in the City.

It is perhaps one of the most comprehensive sites about Warsaw. Having been built by someone who lives in Warsaw, you get to see the city from ground level and learn what it is like to travel and live there.
But aside from the City's physical location, it enjoys a unique location within the Polish culture.

Poland is a country of regions with the people varying within each of the regions. And the regions fall into two general classifications often known as Poland A and Poland B. Warsaw could be called Poland C.

That is because not only is it the capital of Poland, it is also the Country's financial center and, as a matter of fact, the financial center for Eastern Europe. As such it has attracted young people from all over the country who are interested in pursuing careers that are not generally available in the outlying districts. And the heavy concentration of businesses, as well as the political activity, have resulted in the pace of life being much more rapid than in any of the cities in the Country.

The population is a mix of new and old cultures. Those who live in regions such as Kabaty, at the end of the Metro Line live in modern apartment complexes and tend to be young. Those who live in older districts such as Zoliborz live in buildings that were built after the war, but during the communist times, tend to be older. The lifestyles in both these districts, as well as other regions around Warsaw, differ significantly.

Warsaw arose from the rubble after the second world war. It is difficult to comprehend what the Polish people did to rebuild their city. Here is a link to a video that might help to put Warsaw and its people in perspective. History Of Warsaw

There is much more on the rebuilding of Warsaw at the Museum of the Warsaw Uprising.

Today, Warsaw continues to rebuild. Many of the buildings that were erected after the war but during communist times are being torn down and replaced by modern structures.

Large shopping malls and shopping centers are located everywhere from the Centrum to the outlying districts. You can see videos about them in the Warsaw Poland Play list.

There are expensive and modern public transportation systems. In modern-day Warsaw, one does not need a car for everyday life.

At a for the tourist, there is more than enough to keep one busy. One can choose sightseeing in Warsaw's old town or spending one's time at one of the modern beer drinking holes or pubs.

TOP 5 most beautiful Warsaw Metro stations

The Warsaw metro is one of the youngest in Europe and so far, the only metro in Poland. After spending some time in Warsaw metro and visiting several stations, I made a TOP 5 list of my favorite stations for you.

The Stefan Starzyński Kabaty Woods Nature Reserve (Polish: Rezerwat przyrody Las Kabacki im. Stefana Starzyńskiego) is a woodland park located in southern Warsaw, between two major arteries, Puławska and Łukasz Drewny Streets. Administratively the park belongs to southern Warsaw's Ursynów district.

The Kabaty Woods lie on flat ground, except for an east part comprising hills of dune origin. A striking landscape accent is a high escarpment above the glacial valley of the Vistula River, which forms the reserve's eastern border.

The Kabaty Woods are a reservoir of fresh air for the surrounding housing developments, as well as a popular place of rest and recreation. The Woods are easily reached via buses and the Warsaw Metro.

During the German occupation of Poland (World War II), it was the site of a massacre of 200 Poles, perpetrated by the Germans in December 1939 and January 1940 as part of the genocidal Intelligenzaktion campaign
