Turku in 5 minutes 🤩☀ Turku is the oldest city in Finland
Turku is the number one food city in Finland. And on top of that, it is located in the sunniest region of the country. Today, Turku is considered a hip and lively student city with modern charm.
In Turku city centre, you can rent a bike and ride along the river to the Baltic Sea. Alternatively, you can take a long walk from the castle to the cathedral. There are many restaurants along the way, most of them serving traditional Finnish dishes. OOBU (advertising) would be one of them. Another restaurant is located in a former prison.
Around Turku are the most islands in Finland. Therefore, there is a lot of nature and water in the area. A bit out of the city, you can visit families in their homes via Local Home Visit (advertisement) and cook together. This gives you an insight into typical Finnish life. Of course, you also go to the sauna, like in Tampere or Helsinki (see our other two Finland videos).
The Turku archipelago also has a lot to offer. On many islands you can go hiking or even visit villas. We stayed at Villa Wolax (advertisement) and took a boat to see the islands.

Fiskars, Rauma, Paimio ROAD TRIP!
Road trip to Rauma, Fiskars and Paimio Sanatorium!
Renting a car is a great option to travel during Covid. We had take away meals either in the car, walking or in our hotel room. It was also a very budget friendly trip as there are no restaurants or events to spend for.
Fiskars is a home for one of the biggest Finnish brands with the same name. Locals are friendly, has small design shops in the village. We were told that the village was formed in 80s with the initiative of a woman who invited all the artists to make art and settle in Fiskars. Cool place to visit. Feeling like I gotta purchase one of those orange Fiskars scissors now :)
Old Rauma with its colorful wooden houses is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A day is enough to see the whole city.
We stopped by Paimio Sanatorium as my road friend was an architect. He admired the building from every side whereas it didn't mean much to me. Unless you are deep into architecture, no need to see it imo.

Midnight walk in Katariinanlaakso, Turku, Finland | Walk With Me | 4K
Sometimes you just have to go for a midnight forest walk.
This was a wonderful walk taking advantage of the bright nights we get during the Finnish summers. But it also served as a test for my camera’s video quality in darker settings, so the quality isn’t as good as it is in my other videos. The thick canopy of the forest made the dark parts really dark, but you can see how bright the night really was when I walked along the shore and the fields.
Katariinanlaakso (Katariina’s Valley) is a beautiful wooded area right next to the sea in Southern Turku. There are several paths criss-crossing the area. Some go over the large central hill while some follow closer to the shore. The area is also connected to a larger nature area in the next town over, Kaarina, which I will probably visit in the future.
Being so close to the actual city of Turku Katariinanlaakso has a pretty interesting history. The forests and fields that today make up the area were part of the Ispois Estate since the 1400s and today the Ispois Mansion from the 1700s dominates a hill just North of the parking lot at the start of the trail. The name of Katariinanlaakso has one traditional origin and one more probable origin.
The traditional origin story of the name is connected to the princess of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Duchess of Finland and later queen of Sweden, Catherine Jagiellon (called Katariina in Finnish). Legend has it that she had a picnic at the large flat rock that can be found in the forest here (15:10 in the video). This is not a very old legend, has no evidence to prove it and the name “Katariinanlaakso” was not used until the late 1700s. The more probable origin is that it got its name from Katarina von Berg, the wife of Simon Lilliegren who owned the estate in the mid-1700s.
