Two blocks of raw sandstone which measure 3.30 m for the highest and 3 m for the smallest. Queen Brunehaut, wanting to build a road that would lead to the land of the Morins, made a pact with the devil to help her. His soul would belong to him if he finished the road in one night, before the first rooster crows. A little before daybreak, the queen wakes the rooster, which begins to crow before the fateful hour. Furious at having been fooled, Satan lets go of the two huge stones he was still holding… They stuck in the ground, where we still see them.
The Brunehaut road and the mystery of the megaliths
perspective of the two menhirs of the twin stones of Ecoivres This story reminds us that the Chaussée Brunehaut actually passes not far from here (D341). This ancient Roman road which connects Arras – Thérouanne – Boulogne-sur-Mer, with a surprisingly straight line, bears the name of the queen who has become legendary (547-613). His tragic fate and his galloping horse are part of the stories and beliefs that run through the region. Her reputation as a builder, in particular of trade routes, left her mark on this roadway, which actually predates Queen Brunehaut. The nearby megaliths have been shrouded in the same legendary.
The Nord-Pas-de-Calais counted a large number of megaliths before the geographical upheavals of the two world wars. Others have been used for the stonework of paths or building stones... Those that persist are again highlighted and gladly open the doors to another time where legends and beliefs mingle.
