Austin is the state capital of Texas, an inland city bordering the Hill Country region. Home to the University of Texas flagship campus, Austin is known for its eclectic live-music scene centered around country, blues and rock. Its many parks and lakes are popular for hiking, biking, swimming and boating. South of the city, Formula One's Circuit of the Americas raceway has hosted the United States Grand Prix.
Though you may be in the The Live Music Capital of the World when in Austin (apologies to Nashville), but there is plenty to fill your itinerary in between sets. Lace up your sneakers, because much of the best things happen outside. Stroll public art installations, and visit revitalized waterside parks, natural swimming holes, and a pride of peacocks by day; then watch the famous Austin bat colony fly as the sun sets (everyone has to do it once) by night, preferably with a good drink in hand. You’ll still have time to shop for a pair of cowboy boots before a two-step dance lesson set to a live show. If you're wondering where to start, here are the best things to do in Austin.

With the mostly mild winters in Central Texas, this sunset is nice to watch almost year-round. Spread out a blanket or take advantage of the many picnic tables and pavilion that are at the site.
#3: BARTON SPRINGS POOL- Within Zilker Park's 358 acres lies one of the crown jewels of Austin - Barton Springs Pool. The pool itself measures three acres in size, and is fed from underground springs with an average temperature of 68-70 degrees, ideal for year-round swimming. Over the years, Barton Springs Pool has drawn people from all walks of life, from legislators who have concocted state laws there to free-spirited, topless sunbathers who turned heads in the 1970s. Robert Redford learned to swim at the pool when he was five years old while visiting family in Austin. Today, Barton Springs still attracts a diverse crowd of people and has seen record setting numbers of visitors nearing 800,000 in recent years.
#2: ZILKER METROPOLITAN PARK- This 351-acre park is arguably the most popular in town, and is considered Austin's most-loved park. The Capitol grounds span 22 acres and feature historical buildings, 17 monuments, and beautifully landscaped lawns in addition to the Capitol building itself. The capitol rotunda features portraits of every person who has served as president of the Republic of Texas or Governor of the state of Texas . The building has nearly four hundred rooms and more than nine hundred windows. Come learn about Texas History and make some of your own.
