Canal City Jiaxing - China
Jiaxing (嘉興) is a historic city in Zhejiang province. The historic city center is less than an hour by train from its much larger neighbor to the north-east, Shanghai, which makes Jiaxing a popular day trip destination from Shanghai. It is also easily reached from Hangzhou, Suzhou or Nanjing. Jiaxing city also includes Wuzhen (烏鎮) and Xitang (西塘), two well-known preserved canal towns, and the historic district of Pinghu.
Jiaxing is more than 2000 years old. It was a strategically important town, and fought over by different kingdoms. The citadel at the city's centre is one vestige of this history.
The countryside around Jiaxing became some of China's richest agriculturally, and Jiaxing became a rich market town. In the 6th century, Jiaxing became an important stop on the Grand Canal, the 1,000-km-long watercourse that connected the economically important Yangtze Delta with Beijing, the political capital. Jiaxing became a popular place for scholar-officials to retire to. It was a favorite destination of the Qianlong emperor. To the emperor, Jiaxing, with its prosperous town and busy canal, combined with a beautiful lake and unspoilt countryside, was the ideal Chinese city. In the 19th and 20th centuries, neighboring Shanghai rose up as an international port and metropolis, and modern, Western influences also came to Jiaxing. The Carmelites built one of China's grandest churches in the city center.

Jiaxing is known for its picturesque water towns, and this one did not disappoint! With its narrow canals, stone bridges, and traditional architecture, it was like stepping back in time. I loved exploring the streets and alleys and trying out some of the local street food.

One of the highlights of the trip was taking a boat ride through the canals. It was a great way to see the town from a different perspective and get some beautiful views of the old buildings and gardens.

Chinese Night Market in Jiaxing, China
In the United States, even in a big city, things get pretty quiet out after rush hour and dinner, even on weekends. In China however, evenings are very lively every night of the week. Many streets turn into markets with vendors hawking things like perfume, underwear, and radios. Not only does this video provide at look at these products, but we also hear my purchasing criteria and learn a simple and effective way to practice Mandarin.
Useful market Mandarin:

• 香水 (xiāng shǔi) perfume
• 内裤 (nèi kù) underwear
• 收音机 (shōu yīn jī) radio
• 看一看 (kàn yī kàn) just looking

Exploring Nanhu Lake Red Bridge and Ecological park, Jiaxing, China.
Today we visited the relatively newly opened YuangYang Lounge Bridge (The Red Bridge) in Jiaxing, China. Wandered around the 2.5 km structure and enjoyed the peace and tranquility of Xinanhu Ecological park which is located within the city of Jiaxing about 35 minutes from Shanghai by high speed train or 90 plus minutes by car on the highway. Jiaxing has a history of over 2000 years and is home to many interesting places, parks and other attractions but it's most famous as the location of the very first meeting of the fledgling communist party. Jiaxing is also the birthplace of the Communist Party of China as the first National Congress of the Communist Party of China closed successfully in a boat on Nanhu Lake in Jiaxing. Also famous for it's Jiaxing zongzi (嘉兴粽子) made with sticky or glutenous rice and filled with pork. Before the Covid pandemic Yue He was a very lively place in the evenings with lots of bars and live music venues, unfortunately many of these businesses struggled to survive and only now is the Watertown starting to recover.
There's been a huge amount of negative media recently about China, please take a few minutes view some of my vlogs and you'll see that China is not the place that the press and politicians want you to believe it is.
I've been living in China on an off for almost 14 years now, however my wife and I recently moved into a new apartment in the Chinese city of Jiaxing. Jiaxing is approximately 30 minutes from Shanghai by high speed train and has a population of around 5 million. This will give you some idea of the interesting things we can find within 1 KM of our new home.

Exploring Downtown Jiaxing By Bike | What A Small Rich City Like In China? | 嘉兴 | 浙江
Situated in northeastern Zhejiang Province, central part of the Yangtze Delta, Jiaxing holds an advantaged geographic location, adjacent to the Taihu Lake to the north.
It lies across the Hangzhou Bay from Shaoxing and Ningbo, and connects to Huzhou in the west.
Located midway between Suzhou and Hangzhou, it is no more than 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou.
With more than 2,000 years of cultural history, Jiaxing has been a prosperous and busy place since ancient times.
The Wuzhen Water Town and Xitang Water Town, highlights of Jiaxing, are still bustling and retain the original styles and features.
The waterways, ancient residences and bridges, winding stone roads and time-honored shops, not to mention many historic attractions, make them the great antidote from the rush and noisy city life.
Jiaxing is also the birthplace of the Communist Party of China as the first National Congress of the Communist Party of China closed successfully in a boat on Nanhu Lake in Jiaxing.

Jiaxing was a place of fish and rice. More than 7,000 years ago, there were inhabitants living on fishery and animal husbandry.
It made a great progress in economy during the Sui Dynasty (581-618) due to the construction of the Jiang Nan He, Hangzhou to Zhenjiang section of the Grand Canal.
The canal helped the region to be a bread basket in southeast of China, and a place wealthy in cotton fabric and silk.

The terrain of the area is flat and low, generally descending from the south to the north. Water-filled depressions are mainly distributed in the area nearby the Taihu Lake.
