Passing Through Small Town Jerseyville, IL in 4k Video

Filmed on Sunday, February 26, 2023, I drive through the village of Jerseyville, Illinois. I didn't spend as much time here as usual - I needed to get to Alton, Illinois before sunset and I was running late. In this video I drive straight through town and don't poke around at all. Sorry about that!

Jerseyville is the largest city in and the county seat of Jersey County, Illinois, United States. At the 2020 census, the city had a total population of 8,337.

Jerseyville is a part of Southern Illinois, the Metro-East region and the St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area.

In 1827, James Faulkner, a Pennsylvania native, and his family built a small framed structure that was named the Little Red House, in the area that is now known as Jerseyville. The Little Red House served as the first stagecoach station, first tavern, first school, and first bank in the immediate area. By 1834, the small settlement that grew up around Faulkner's home, then known as Hickory Grove by its residents, was surveyed and platted by two immigrants from New Jersey, John Lott and Edward M. Daly. Lott and Daly's involvement marked the beginning of a proportionally large number of merchants, businessmen and settlers from New Jersey. A meeting was called in that same year at the Little Red House to vote for a town name, so a post office could be established. The name of Jerseyville was chosen to honor the native state of many of its inhabitants.

In 1839, Jersey County was formed out of Greene County and Jerseyville was named as its county seat. After the American Civil War ended, and the construction of the Alton & Chicago Railroad was completed, Jerseyville saw a period of commercial, industrial and urban growth. The first major period of growth in the city occurred from 1880 to 1916, and from that time to the present, Jerseyville's growth has since been steady and substantial. The majority of the commercial structures that are now located in the Downtown Historic District and Courthouse Square were built during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was also during this time that the present Jersey County Courthouse was built. The two-story, 124-foot-tall (38 m) Romanesque Revival building was completed in 1893, and is considered to be one of the most aesthetic courthouses in the area. Other nearby Victorian style buildings in the city include Queen Anne, Edwardian and Italianate architectural features, with several of these buildings having been recently renovated.

From 1912 to 1918, Jerseyville was the terminus of an interurban electric passenger railroad from Alton which was the stub of a project by the Alton, Jacksonville and Peoria Railway for a line to Peoria.

In recent decades, Jerseyville has been a testing ground in the agricultural biotechnology field. Bayer (formerly Monsanto) owns and operates a facility located just south of the city, which in 1987, was the site of the world's very first biotechnology field trial – first with tomatoes and later that year with soybeans. The facility was also home to the first triple stacked corn trial in 1998, which later became a part of one of Monsanto's top-selling products. The facility was further expanded in 2008, and now consists of sixteen greenhouses and almost 300 acres (120 ha) of land for field testing.

The Downtown Historic District is presently home to some antique stores and gift shops, some clothing and shoe stores, a pharmacy, public library, post office, and several local restaurants and banks. Most of the growth that has occurred since the early 1990s has been in the southern and southwestern portions of the city, where new residential subdivisions and retail shopping centers have been built, and where numerous land annexations have been made by the city.

The median income for a household in the city was $35,556, and the median income for a family was $46,832. Males had a median income of $37,312 versus $21,282 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,178. About 5.8% of families and 7.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.5% of those under age 18 and 4.7% of those age 65 or over.

Jerseyville has five places and sites that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Jersey County Courthouse and the Jerseyville Downtown Historic District were added in 1986. The Col. William H. Fulkerson Farmstead was added to the Register in 1998, and the Fisher-Chapman Farmstead was added in 2012. The Jerseyville First Presbyterian Church was added to the Register in 2021.

Jerseyville was also a minor stopping point on the historic Underground Railroad before and during the Civil War. The Little Red House and a few other residences were utilized as stations for the Underground Railroad until the end of the Civil War, with some residences having false cellars that were used to hide slaves searching for freedom. #driving #travel #drivingtour

In this video, we discuss the ten places in the state of Illinois with the smallest population, according to the most recent census data.

Welcome to Downtown Jersey City, New Jersey, USA!!

A compilation of clips (created by me: all the same day) of the downtown district of the second largest city of New Jersey: Jersey City. Downtown Jersey City is a huge downtown, with a mall (Newport Mall), parks, waterfront, light rail system, skyscrapers, restaurants, hotels, a pedestrian plaza with events, PATH trains, and more. In fact, its a cultural center, and the center of finance (one of them), with thousands of people and vehicles. Its home of the tallest tower of the state and other tall skyscrapers. Its a good destination to come.

Jersey City, NJ is the 2nd largest city of the state and has a population of nearly 300,000 people. Its the county seat of Hudson County.

Driving Around Tiny Village Batchtown, IL in 4k Video

Filmed in April 2023, I drive around the small town Batchtown, Illinois to see what's going on.

Batchtown is a village in southern Calhoun County, Illinois, United States. The population was 170 at the 2020 census, down from 214 at the 2010 census.

The village and the area surrounding it was called Richwoods during the 1850s. Then people started referring to the area as Sam White's, after a leading merchant in Calhoun County. It was later called Batchelder Ville, after William Batchelder, who lived in the village during the 1860s. A post office opened up in the community in 1879 and Batchtown became the official name of the village.

By the time the village was incorporated, there were several stores and shops. The Grand Army of the Republic set up a post in the village and the first Batchtown Methodist Church was set up.

William Batchelder was a leading citizen in the community. He owned and operated a corn mill in Batchtown. He later changed the corn mill into a flour mill. William Batchelder was also a justice of the peace and merchant.

Samuel White was also a leading citizen in Batchtown. He owned a store in the village that sold stock groceries, dry goods, shoes, and hardware. He also sold farm machinery.

As of the 2020 census there were 170 people, 69 households, and 53 families residing in the village.

The racial makeup of the village was 97.06% White and 2.94% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.76% of the population.

The per capita income for the village was $27,152. No families and 2.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including none of those under age 18 and 11.1% of those age 65 or over. #driving #travel #drivingtour

NEW JERSEY MEILLEUR QUE NEW YORK ?!

A Forgotten Town in Southern Illinois & its history

A Forgotten Town in Southern Illinois - We explore forgotten history while walking the empty streets of another living Midwestern ghost town. Looking at what's left of this small Ohio River town, it's easy to dismiss this town's past as being anything but significant. Yet, this town in Southern Illinois once played an important role in early American history. Find out what we learned about this historic town and its important role in Illinois history in this episode of SightseeingSally.

About me: I grew up in a small town the Midwest. Now I drive America's backroads exploring small towns, forgotten places, local history and more!

driving around in Carrollton, Illinois 7/10/10

This shows a bit of the small Illinois town of Carrollton as it appeared 7/10/10. This is the seat of Greene County and according to the 2010 census, the population is 2484. P.S. I would like to very much to believe it has not changed a great deal since July 2010 because, amazingly, the population in 2020 was 2485 and has pretty much been around this number since 1890 when the population was 2258. It makes me happy for rural farming towns to continue to maintain themselves and exist.

Aerie's Alpine Coaster in Grafton, Illinois (GoPro Hero 3+ Silver Chest-Mount Video)

Ever since I've seen videos of alpine coasters here on YouTube, I have ALWAYS wanted to ride one for myself! Well, some time ago, I discovered that there is an alpine coaster in Grafton, Illinois, which actually borders my hometown!

I was with 2 of my friends from school, and we rode the Grafton ferry from St. Charles, Missouri to Grafton, Illinois to ride this alpine coaster. We then rode the Grafton SkyTour, which is basically just a ski lift, to get up to the alpine coaster.

Click the link below to check out my video of the Grafton SkyTour:

*NOTE*
The reason why I was going slow in the video is because there was another cart/sled in front of me. If you would like to see a video of a faster ride, check out my friend's video of this ride from his point of view. Check back on this description later for the link to my friend's video after he has uploaded it to his channel.

*ABOUT THE ALPINE COASTER*
Aerie's Alpine Coaster is a BRAND NEW alpine coaster that opened sometime last year, and is the ONLY alpine coaster in Illinois! (There is an alpine SLIDE in Galena, Illinois, but that is different from this alpine coaster.)

This alpine coaster is located on top of a hill at the top of the Grafton SkyTour, and is a part of Aerie's Resort in Grafton, Illinois. This alpine coaster is one of THREE attractions that is a part of Aerie's Resort, with the Grafton SkyTour being another attraction. Go to the Aerie's Resort website at the bottom of this description to see information about all of their attractions.

You start your ride at the top of the hill and ride down the hill through the woods. A cable lift will then take you back up the hill to the station at the top of the hill where you started.

Since you will be riding through the woods, make sure to keep an eye out for animals, like deer!

This alpine coaster is a user-operated ride, meaning YOU are in control of how fast you go using the brake lever on your cart/sled. You are not required to use the brake at all, although you must keep both hands on the brake lever to keep it pushed down in order to go.

You will reach a speed of up to 28 MPH on this alpine coaster if you don't use your brake at all, but don't worry, you will automatically stop at the end of the ride before the lift hill regardless if you are pushing the brake lever down or not. Once you reach the lift hill, you no longer need to push the brake lever down.

*NOTE:* Reaching 28 MPH is dependent on if there is another cart/sled less than 80 feet in front of you. Your cart/sled will automatically slow down during your ride if there is another cart/sled less than 80 feet in front of you, regardless if you are pushing the brake lever down or not.

This alpine coaster is open ALL YEAR LONG, INCLUDING in the snow!

*DIRECTIONS*
To get to this alpine coaster, you *MUST* ride the Grafton SkyTour, which is basically just a ski lift. The Grafton SkyTour costs $10 per person, but you can ride it as many times as you want for the entire day, and you have the choice between an open seat or a gondola. You can also purchase a season pass for the Grafton SkyTour for $59.99 per person for an entire year.

*NOTE:* The Grafton SkyTour is the *ONLY* way to get to the alpine coaster. You cannot drive up to the alpine coaster.

We make a visit to Aerie's Resort in Grafton, Illinois to go for a few rides on the BRAND NEW alpine coaster! This is the first Alpine Coaster in Illinois and the first in this region (the nearest ones to this area are either in Branson, Missouri or the Pigeon Forge, Tennessee area).
