Located near the top of Cleopatra Hill between Prescott and Flagstaff is the historic copper mining town of Jerome, Arizona. Once known as the wickedest town in the west, Jerome was born a copper mining camp, growing from a settlement of tents into a roaring mining community.

After its founding in 1876, Jerome was at one time the fourth largest city in Arizona with the population peaking at around 15,000 in the 1920’s. The Great Depression slowed the mining operation and the claim eventually went to Phelps Dodge, who still holds the claim to this day. World War II greatly increased the demand for copper, but after the war demand decreased dramatically. With Jerome’s economy completely dependent upon the demand for copper, Phelps Dodge Mine closed in 1953. The remaining population of around 50 to 100 people promoted the town as a historic ghost town. In 1967 Jerome was designated a National Historic District by the federal government.

Today Jerome is a thriving tourist and artist hub with a population of around 450 people. Jerome resides above what was once the largest copper mine in Arizona which was producing an astonishing 3 million pounds of copper per month. Men and women from all over the world made their way to Arizona to find work and perhaps a new way of life. Today the mines may be silent, but Jerome has found new life as the largest ghost town in America. Once a thriving mining camp full of miners, bootleggers, gamblers, and prostitutes, now a bustling tourist destination full of artists, musicians, and gift shop proprietors.

The Sliding Town of Jerome, Arizona | Things To Do In Arizona

Located in the Black Hills of Yavapai County, Arizona, Jerome is a historic town with roots dating back to the late 19th century. Positioned on Cleopatra Hill, which offers stunning views of the Verde Valley, Jerome sits at an elevation exceeding 5,000 feet above sea level and can be reached by a very narrow access road. Situated approximately 100 miles north of Phoenix along State Route 89, between Sedona and Prescott, this town was founded in 1876 and was a bustling hub in the 1920s, boasting a population of over 10,000 residents, thanks to the prosperity brought by lucrative copper mines. At one time it was considered as the fourth largest city in Arizona. Today it sits on sliding and unstable ground and most of its houses cannot be purchased through mortgage, because banks will simply refuse to finance them due to high risk of collapsing.

Experts estimate that there are 88 miles of mining tunnels in Jerome area, which makes the ground very unstable and dangerous. The town has its own police and fire departments with 3 policemen. Crime is mostly negligent in this town, with majority of incidents happening on Friday nights due to alcohol consumption.

Today Jerome's population is about 450 residents. Despite the small population, the town has transformed into a unique destination renowned for its tourist attractions with over 1.5 million people visiting every year. The town boasts art galleries, coffee houses, restaurants, a state park, and a local museum focused on mining history.

Old West Towns: Jerome Arizona | Walking through town in 2023

Today I continue my Old West Towns series with a very enjoyable visit to Jerome Arizona. Take a walk through the town and see some of the shops and saloons that the town has to offer. We went into a couple of the stores but not into the bars due to loud music being played throughout the town because of a music festival. We also get a look at the famous Sliding Jail and some old mining headframes.

The HAUNTED Hamburger in Jerome, Arizona - Worth it? #smalltown #tourism #urbanexploration

How did the Haunted Hamburger get its name you ask? Is it really haunted? Here’s the story, you be the judge.

It all started years ago when Michelle and Eric Jurisin acquired the restaurant. The building, old and abandoned, was in need of great repair before it could be opened for your dining pleasure. This is when the funny business began. As with all old buildings, when inhabitants take initial occupation, from its walls come the spirits to observe, and sometimes greet the newcomers. The Haunted Hamburger spirits were no different. Not only were these spirits curious but possibly frustrated tradesmen from long ago as it was tools that these spirits liked to take. More specifically, hammers. Yes, hammers. One hammer, then two, then three hammers had disappeared. Was this a case of memory loss? At first it was thought so until a prior owner asked the Jurisins if they had met the ghosts yet and to beware…they liked hammers! Shortly after this confirmation the hammers began to reappear showing up in the most conspicuous places.

What followed next was literally too ‘in your face’ to ignore, says Eric. One day, in the middle of repairs, he remembered he needed to go upstairs to finish a project. Just as he reached the top floor a door that he was standing next to slammed, nearly smashing him in the face. You could argue a cross breeze is strong enough to slam a door, and that would be true. Except, Eric had just sealed up all of the building’s windows with thick plastic and tape to keep the cold winter air out. He knew there was no air current in the house.

What other odd occurrences frightened staff, owners and guests alike in the Haunted Hamburger? Cans flying off shelves, the hot water being turned on in the middle of the night. Distinct smells in the stair well and even photographs guests have taken capturing the vague image of a woman. Is the Haunted Hamburger truly haunted? Hang out for a while and see for yourself.

But leave your hammers at home.
Enjoy your Haunted Burger experience in the dining room with a bookshelf in the ceiling, on our airy patio, or the amazing back porch with a view of the Verde Valley and the San Francisco Peaks 50 miles distant. It’s all fun and always terrific food and drink.
