🔔 Subscribe for daily shorts and weekly videos:
It is located at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers, where the U.S. states of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia meet. The town was founded in 1747 by Robert Harper, who established and maintained a ferry across the Potomac River. It quickly grew into an important transportation and industrial center. In 1799, the United States government established the Harpers Ferry Armory, which produced weapons for the US military. Harpers Ferry played a significant role in the American Civil War. In 1859, abolitionist John Brown led a raid on the Harpers Ferry Armory in an attempt to arm slaves and start a rebellion. Brown's raid was unsuccessful, but it helped to spark the Civil War. Harpers Ferry was also the site of the largest surrender of Union troops during the Civil War, where Confederate General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson captured the site and some 12,000 Union soldiers. Today, Harpers Ferry is a popular tourist destination. The town is home to a number of historic sites, including the Harpers Ferry Armory, John Brown's Fort, and the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Thanks for watching.
