We Went To Italy's CRAZIEST Festival 🇮🇹 | North Italy Travel | Ivrea

A festival where you throw oranges at medieval guards might not sound Italian but it's one of the best festivals celebrated during carnival in North Italy. This takes places in a small town of Ivrea in the Piedmont region. Today we want to take you to the opening day of this Carnival celebration and show you what battle of the oranges is really like!

The Battle of the Oranges is a unique and colorful festival that takes place in Ivrea, a town in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. This event is part of the Ivrea Carnival, which is one of the oldest and most famous carnivals in Italy, attracting thousands of participants and spectators every year. The battle usually occurs in February, in the days leading up to Lent.

Historical Significance
The festival commemorates the town's insurrection against tyranny. According to popular legend, the battle reenacts a medieval event where the townspeople revolted against a tyrannical ruler. The story goes that the ruler attempted to exercise the jus primae noctis (right of the first night) on a miller's daughter, Violetta. She resisted and decapitated the tyrant, which sparked a popular uprising. The throwing of oranges symbolizes the stones and other objects that the townspeople would have used during the revolt.

Why Oranges?
The use of oranges as weapons is a relatively recent tradition, starting in the 19th century. Initially, beans were thrown, and then apples. The switch to oranges came later, though the exact reason for the change is unclear. Some suggest it might relate to the abundance of oranges in southern Italy, making them a relatively cheap and plentiful ammunition. The oranges represent the stones thrown by the villagers at the castle to signify the fight for freedom.

Little Red Hats
Participants often wear a red Phrygian cap, a symbol of liberty and freedom that dates back to ancient times. Wearing this cap during the battle signifies opposition to tyranny, in line with the festival's historical roots. It also helps to mark festival-goers who do not wish to be targeted directly by orange-throwers, offering a degree of protection amidst the chaos.

Nine Teams
The battle involves nine combat teams that represent different historical districts or groups within Ivrea. Each team has its own unique identity, history, and costume. The teams are part of a structured competition, with points awarded for hits and other factors determined by judges who oversee the event. This structure adds a competitive element to the reenactment, making it more than just a chaotic fruit fight.

Duration of the Battle
The Battle of the Oranges spans over three days, typically taking place in the latter part of the Ivrea Carnival. The event is highly organized despite its chaotic appearance, with specific times and locations for the battles. Safety measures are taken seriously, with nets protecting buildings and spectators, and medical staff on standby.

The festival is deeply ingrained in the cultural identity of Ivrea and is a significant draw for tourists. Beyond the spectacle of the orange battles, the event includes parades, historical reenactments, and other festivities that celebrate the town's heritage and the spirit of community resistance against oppression.

Storico Carnevale di Ivrea, Italy | Travel Video

Historical Carnival of Ivrea is perhaps most known for its Battle of Oranges. Tucked in a small town in the province of Turin lies the oldest carnival celebrated in Italy. The carnival beautifully intertwines history and legend. As per the legend, the celebration commemorates the city's defiance against the tyrannical leader, Marquess of Monferrato who starved the city. The star of the carnival is the Miller's daughter Violetta who decapitated the tyrant by killing him with his own sword. The Battle of Oranges celebrates this uprising. Each year a young girl is chosen to play the part of Violetta. The battle of oranges also symbolizes the uprising of the people during the 19th century when French occupied Italy. The distribution of beans to the civil, enactment of the legend of Violetta followed by parade with pipes and drums then culminates into a magnificient battle. The carnival has been celebrated for over 200 years and in this span it has been cancelled only once to mark the death of Adriano Olivetti. Unfortunately this year will the second time in its history when this festival is not celebrated due to Covid restrictions.

This video from 2019 celebration shows the pride and fervour with which Italians celebrated it. It feels like a home video and I sincerely hope that these people are alive and well today.

Ivrea is a town and comune of the Metropolitan City of Turin in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. Situated on the road leading to the Aosta Valley (part of the medieval Via Francigena), it straddles the Dora Baltea and is regarded as the centre of the Canavese area. Ivrea lies in a basin that in prehistoric times formed a large lake. Today, five smaller lakes—Sirio, San Michele, Pistono, Nero and Campagna—are found in the area around the town.
On 1 July 2018, the site which is known as Industrial City of the 20th Century was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Castle of Ivrea, Ivrea, Piedmont, Italy, Europe

Place in the upper part of the city, near the cathedral, the castle of Ivrea also known as the castle of the red towers characterizes the landscape of Ivrea. Construction began in 1358 by order of Amedeo VI of Savoy, said the Conte Verde with responsibility entrusted to the architect Ambrose Cognon; ended between 1393 and 1395 by engaging a large amount of labor: it is believed that on certain days you worked more than a thousand people (consider that in those days Ivrea had about 3500 inhabitants with skilled workers from Vercelli, Milan and Geneva. With site selection Amedeo VI wanted the castle ergesse alongside the main offices of the political and religious power medieval: the Bishop's Palace and the City (Palace of the cupboard). To make room for the new building was to be demolished several houses and walls the city to the north. Located in strategic position from which you can dominate the road leading to Val d'Aosta, the castle was built primarily with defensive function. The castle was conceived as a massive construction quadrangular, with cylindrical towers that rise directly from the ground; the premises and rooms of the castle are on three sleeves, probably three stories high, overlooking the inner courtyard. Access is through un'antiporta and a subsequent drawbridge suspended over a moat. Along the perimeter of the walls with battlements dovetail runs the walkway, supported by corbels with defensive purposes. In the courtyard you can still see the well and the ice (diameter of 6 m. And depth of 4m). Tensions persisted war which brought about the construction, in the second half of the fifteenth century the castle acted mainly as refined residence of the Savoy, assisting the development of culture and the arts that was promoted in particular by the Duchess Yolande of Valois, daughter of Charles VII King of France and Mary of Anjou. Writing in 1522 prepared for the celebration of a baptism, informs us on the furnishings of the rooms, the decorations, dances and parties that animated the life of the court. We also know the name of a late Gothic French painter, Nicolas Robert, who painted in the castle's oratory Yolande of Valois (despite the written testimonies of his works there is no trace). The gracious taste of that period remains track in an elegant mullioned window with trefoil arches topped by coats of arms of the House of Savoy, which opens up on the south wall. Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with the raging in the territory canavesano struggles between French and Spanish, the castle was restored and resumed its function as a military garrison. In 1676 lightning caused the explosion of the ammunition depot located in the tower of the northwest (the tower coaming), which caused explosion, along with the collapse of the tower, countless deaths and the destruction of many houses built close to the castle. The tower was not rebuilt, and it is now severed, with a conical roof slabs of slate. Since 1700 the building was used as a prison and then keeping this function until 1970. In this period intervened significant restructuring requirements linked to prison: so probably the original three-story structure was modified in four, obtaining a greater number of rooms of lesser height . After 1970, the castle was abandoned and closed to the public for nine years. Subsequent restoration behaved the elimination of buildings that were added in the courtyard, the review of all the covers and the restoration of the towers. The castle, owned by the state, is now in concession to the City that on specific occasions has guaranteed its opening to the public.

IVREA

IVREA
Ivrea is an Italian town of 23 442 inhabitants located in the metropolitan city of Turin, in Piedmont, not far from the entrance to the Valle D'Aosta. It is considered the capital of the Canavese.
From 1 July 2018 it became part of the UNESCO heritage.
It is bathed by the Dora Baltea river, a tributary of the Po, which characterizes the city.
This city has literally captured me, for its history and its style that project you into another time. The historic and famous carnival of Ivrea has always fascinated me very much with its battle of the oranges.
