Places to see in ( Birmingham - USA )

Places to see in ( Birmingham - USA )

Birmingham is the largest city in the state of Alabama. With more than 1.2 million people in the metropolitan area, Birmingham is the cultural and economic heart of Alabama. In much of the world, Birmingham is best remembered as the site of racist violence, bombings, and nonviolent protest in the 1960s, when the city was still racially segregated by law. Visitors today are often surprised to find a pleasant green city of ridges and valleys, with many attractive views and friendly, hospitable people.

From its founding through the end of the 1960s, Birmingham was a primary industrial center of the southern United States. Its growth from 1881 through 1920 earned it nicknames such as The Magic City and The Pittsburgh of the South. Its major industries were iron and steel production. Major components of the railroad industry, rails and railroad cars, were manufactured in Birmingham. Since the 1860s, the two primary hubs of railroading in the Deep South have been Birmingham and Atlanta. The economy diversified in the latter half of the 20th century. Banking, telecommunications, transportation, electrical power transmission, medical care, college education, and insurance have become major economic activities. Birmingham ranks as one of the largest banking centers in the U.S. Also, it is among the most important business centers in the Southeast.

In higher education, Birmingham has been the location of the University of Alabama School of Medicine (formerly the Medical College of Alabama) and the University of Alabama School of Dentistry since 1947. In 1969 it gained the University of Alabama at Birmingham, one of three main campuses of the University of Alabama System. It is home to three private institutions: Samford University, Birmingham-Southern College, and Miles College. The Birmingham area has major colleges of medicine, dentistry, optometry, physical therapy, pharmacy, law, engineering, and nursing. The city has three of the state's five law schools: Cumberland School of Law, Birmingham School of Law, and Miles Law School. Birmingham is also the headquarters of the Southwestern Athletic Conference and the Southeastern Conference, one of the major U.S. collegiate athletic conferences.

Birmingham occupies Jones Valley, flanked by long parallel mountain ridges (tailing ends of the Appalachian Mountains) running from northeast to southwest. The valley is drained by small creeks (Village Creek, Valley Creek) which flow into the Black Warrior River. The valley was bisected by the principal railroad corridor, along which most of the early manufacturing operations began. Suburbs in the Birmingham–Hoover metropolitan area :

Summers are very hot and humid, with frequent thunderstorms. Spring and fall are the best seasons for long visits. Even within the city limits, the springtime displays of dogwood, cherry, azalea and other blossoms must be seen to be believed

How much do you love traveling 280 in Birmingham Alabama?

Alabama for Foodies Part I Preview: travels with Darley

Explore food, culture, and history as Darley embarks on a culinary journey through Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Marion in Alabama’s Blackbelt in “Travels with Darley: Alabama for Foodies Part I.” She meets James Beard award-winning chefs in Birmingham and discovers the favorite spots of Crimson Tide coaches, athletes, students, and fans on game days. Darley also visits the restaurant that inspired “Fried Green Tomatoes” and concludes her trip in Marion, where Civil Rights history, biscuit making, and organic farming converge.

Chefs, entrepreneurs and restaurants featured in Tuscaloosa include Sharon Thomas and Michael Thomas at Thomas’ Rib Shack, Dreamland BBQ CEO Betsy McAtee, Seth Wright at Druid City Brewing Company, Rama Jama's with Dr. Margaret Stran of the University of Alabama’s Adapted Athletics program and The Crimson Tide Women’s Wheelchair Basketball team, Jeanie Brown at City Cafe in Northport and Carla Moltz at Nick’s in the Sticks.

Next, Darley visits Birmingham, where award-winning chefs put an emphasis on sourcing quality ingredients from local farmers they know and trust, like Chef Chris Hastings of Hot and Hot Fish Club, a James Beard Award winner for Best Chef South. Chef Hastings takes Darley to The Market at Pepper Place to source more local ingredients. You have to try seafood if you're traveling in Alabama. At Automatic Seafood and Oysters, housed in an old sprinkler manufacturing plant, Chef Adam Evans introduces Darley to oysters from the southern and eastern United States coastlines.

Honored as an American Classic Restaurant by the James Beard Foundation, The Bright Star in Bessermer was founded by Tom Bonduris, who came to Bessemer from Greece in the early 1900s. The Bright Star’s Andreas Anastassakis introduces Darley to his family’s legacy, their famous snapper throats and where football legends dine at this family-run and popular restaurant. Darley then travels outside of Birmingham to Irondale Cafe, made famous by author Fannie Flagg in her book, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, which was later made into a major movie starring Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy and Mary Louise Parker.

In Alabama's Blackbelt in Marion, we make biscuits with Chef Scott Peacock, named Best Chef in the Southeast by the James Beard Foundation. His biscuits have graced the cover and pages of numerous publications, including the New York Times and Gourmet. We learn about the First Congregational Church of Marion, which Mary Moore helped get on the National Register of Historic Places. It was established in 1869 at the Lincoln School by freed slaves and representatives of the American Missionary Association.

Outside of downtown Marion, Darley heads to BDA Farm to explore regenerative farming with Mark Harris, a fourth-generation farmer who works to make food healthier and tastier through natural means.
