TOP 10... FANTASTIC PLACES IN VALLETTA, MALTA

My top 10 choice of the fantastic Valletta its Malta's Awesome capital, built by the Knights of St John on a peninsula that's only 1km by 600m. Its founder decreed that it should be 'a city built by gentlemen for gentlemen', and it retains its 16th-century elegance.

Amazing Malta-Rabat

Rabat is a town in the Northern Region of Malta, with a population of 11,497 as of March 2014. The name of the town is derived from the Arabic word for 'suburb': الرباط, as it was the suburb of the old capital Mdina. Half of the present-day village core also formed part of the Roman city of Melite, before the latter was resized during the Fatimid occupation. The Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See to the Republic of Malta is seated in this village. The Local Council of Rabat is also the administrator of Baħrija. Parts of the films Munich and Black Eagle were shot in Rabat. In December 1999, Mtarfa seceded from Rabat to form a separate Local Council by Act XXI, an amendment to the Local Council Act of 1993 (Act XV). Wekipedia

1 DAY in MDINA and RABAT | Malta | Tour April 2023

Mdina, also known by its Italian-language titles Città Vecchia (Old City) and Città Notabile (Notable City), is a fortified city in the Northern Region of Malta which served as the island's capital from antiquity to the medieval period. The city is still confined within its walls and has a population of just under 300, but it is contiguous with the town of Rabat, which takes its name from the Arabic word for suburb, and has a population of over 11,000.

The city was founded as Maleth in around the 8th century BC by Phoenician settlers and was later renamed Melite by the Romans. Ancient Melite was larger than present-day Mdina and was reduced to its current size during the Byzantine or Arab occupation of Malta. During the latter period, the city adopted its present name, which derives from the Arabic word medina. The city remained the capital of Malta throughout the Middle Ages, until the arrival of the Order of St. John in 1530, when Birgu became the administrative centre of the island. Mdina experienced a period of decline over the following centuries, although it saw a revival in the early 18th century. At this point, it acquired several Baroque features, although it did not lose its medieval character.

Mdina remained the center of the Maltese nobility and religious authorities (and property continues to largely be passed down from families and from generation to generation). Still, it never regained its pre-1530 importance, giving rise to the popular nickname the Silent City by both locals and visitors. Mdina is on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and it is now one of the main tourist attractions in Malta.

Rabat (Maltese: Ir-Rabat), is a town in the Northern Region of Malta, with a population of 11,497 as of March 2014. It adjoins the ancient capital city of Mdina, and a north-western area formed part of the Roman city of Melite until its medieval retrenchment. The Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See to the Republic of Malta is seated in this village. The Local Council of Rabat is also the administrator of Baħrija. Parts of the films Munich and Black Eagle were shot in Rabat. In December 1999, Mtarfa was split from Rabat to form a separate Local Council by Act XXI, an amendment to the Local Council Act of 1993 (Act XV).

Rabat is home to the famous Catacombs of St. Paul and of St. Agatha. These catacombs were used in Roman times to bury the dead as, according to Roman culture, it was unhygienic to bury the dead in the city. Mdina and parts of Rabat were built on top of the ancient Roman city of Melite. The Maltese catacombs were never meant to be hiding places during persecutions or as living quarters.

The Catacombs of St. Paul are now looked after by Heritage Malta. Part of St. Paul's Catacombs, the part accessible from the Parish tradition and as recorded in the Bible, St. Paul stayed for three months when he was shipwrecked on the island in AD 60.[clarification needed]

In the Catacombs of St Agatha's, there are over 500 graves of several types, the majority being for children. There are sections for pagans and Jews, as well as for Christians. There are also unique frescoes.

Another interesting feature in the Maltese catacombs is the agape table, two of which, carved out of bedrock, were found in the Catacombs of St. Paul.

MALTA | Tour of Rabat Malta, home of Roman Catacombs [Filmed in HDR]

RABAT MALTA - Tour of this Malta town near Mdina, homel of Roman Catacombs - filmed in HDR
Rabat is a town in the Northern Region of Malta. It adjoins the ancient capital city of Mdina, and a north-western area formed part of the Roman city of Melite until its medieval retrenchment.

While the main attraction in this area of Malta is medieval Mdina, the larger town of Rabat is also quite worth exploring in its own right. With a number of interesting attractions, lovely architecture, and a wonderful cafe culture, one can easily spend a leisurely day exploring this wonderful place

Rabat is home to the famous Catacombs of St. Paul and of St. Agatha. These catacombs were used in Roman times to bury the dead as, according to Roman culture, it was unhygienic to bury the dead in the city.

Mdina and parts of Rabat were built on top of an ancient Roman city.

Paul stayed for three months when he was shipwrecked on the island in 60 A.D.

Mdina is a popular day-trip destination, and it isn’t difficult to see why. With a fascinating history as the original capital of Malta and its beautiful walled setting, there are some great things to do in Mdina.

Mdina also has a claim to fame as being the filming location for King’s Landing in the first season of HBO’s Game of Thrones. Luckily, however, it hasn’t seemed to have attracted near the number of tourists that Dubrovnik has but it can make you long for the days when Jaime Lannister still had two hands and Ned Stark still had his head.

The adjacent town of Rabat — which quite literally translates to “suburb” — is often overlooked by tourists. However, it is also a wonderful place to visit with some intriguing points of interest. Both towns can also offer a calming refuge from the busyness of Sliema and the touristy streets of Valletta.

RABAT, MALTA | 4K Walk

From Malta.com:

Rabat is a village located in the West of Malta, just outside Mdina. The name of the village means a 'suburb' in Semitic, as it was once the suburb of Mdina, the old capital city.

In the 15th century, while the area served as a shelter from constant pirate attacks, several religious orders arrived in Rabat, remaining there ever since. When the Order of St. John arrived in Malta, Rabat earned significance for its close proximity to Mdina, St Paul’s Grotto, the Covent Schools and for the arable farmland in the village.

During the late 19th century, under the British Rule, Rabat saw the introduction of a number of new social services, such as the building of the first primary school, the initiation of medical and postal services, the upgrading of spring water, street lighting and the start of the train service between Valletta and Rabat. It was also in those times when the two music band clubs, L’Isle Adam and Count Roger were established.

The 20th century brought about major developments in Rabat. The population increased to around 12,000 after the Second World War. This growth encouraged the construction of new housing areas such as Tal-Virtu and Ghajn Qajjet. Nowadays, this remarkable development distinguishes the old part of the town from the new.

Historic Malta | Old City of Mdina + St Paul’s Catacombs in Rabat

My road trip around Malta continues in the old city of Mdina & the ancient Roman burial site of St Paul’s Catacombs in Rabat - both must see destinations & a fascinating piece of historic Malta.
🇲🇹 See more of my Drive Malta videos here →

My Maltese road trip continues as I stop by two of the best places to visit in Malta - the Silent City of Mdina and the adjoining town of Rabat, famous for its underground burial chambers at St Paul’s Catacombs. The history associated with these two places is vast and I loved learning about them as I walked around - it was like stepping back in time!

I started in Rabat where not only were there tiny little streets and quaint alleyways but an ancient Roman burial site underneath the church called St Paul’s Catacombs. I bought a ticket and headed down into the narrow tunnels and small chambers that served the Romans as a place to bury their dead. The catacombs are located outside the main city because Roman law forbade the burying of bodies inside the walls of the city, likely to stop the spread of disease. The site is operated by Heritage Malta and they do a great job of preserving the site.

After leaving St Paul’s Catacombs I headed over to one of Malta’s most beautiful places - the old city of Mdina. Nicknamed the Silent City it is surrounded by large defensive limestone walls and is perched on a hill overlooking the sea - it’s no wonder the Phoenicians made it their administrative centre when they ruled the island. No doubt Mdina is one of the best places to visit if you’re looking for a day out in Malta.

As incredible as the history and heritage of Mdina is, most people seem to visit to get their photograph taken in front of the city gate - famous for being a filming location of the TV show Game of Thrones. I don’t watch it myself but when I saw a photo from the series it felt kind of cool to be there!

Rabat and Mdina are connected together both in terms of geography and history. Once there it’s easy enough to just walk around and see the sights, no public transport necessary as everything is close to the centre and within a 15 minute walk of each other. I parked just outside of the city centre and there seemed to be plenty of free parking if you’re willing to walk approximately 10 minutes, alternatively there’s a load of parking right in the middle but I think there is a charge for that. I saw lots of traffic wardens walking around and checking tickets!

Thanks for joining me so far on my drive around Malta, what an amazing island!! I can’t wait to continue the road trip!
