The prettiest village in North Devon 😍 location at the end 📍#uktravel #travel #uktravels #devon

The prettiest village in North Devon 😍 location at the end 📍

Originally the estate was owned by William the Conqueror, King of England who gifted the village to his wife the Queen of England.

Also listed in the Domesday Book, this unique village clings to a 400-foot cliff, affording glorious coastal views.

This village has been under private ownership for many years which has helped preserve its beauty. The traffic-free cobbled streets descend into a small working harbour and 14th century quay.

You’ll notice romantic lanes that wind off along the route and show an insight into the history. Only sledges and donkey’s are allowed to transport up and down the famous cobbles.

Things to see and included in entry fee:

**The Donkeys**

The main form of transport in the village for centuries, they are perfectly adapted to coping with the steep, uneven cobbled streets. Nowadays, all goods are transported by wooden sledge and these famous residents live a far more relaxed life 😍

**Fishermans cottage**

Which is set up to replicate a typical family cottage in the 1930’s and makes you feel like you’re stepping back in time.

**Kingsley Museum**

Dedicated to Victorian author Charles Kingsley who lived in Clovelly during his childhood and wrote the book ‘Westward Ho!’ which popularised the village as a destination for visitors.

**Beach Waterfall**

If you walk along the beach to the first part of the cliff that is sunken back, you will spot a lovely little waterfall on the beach. Behind the curtain of water lies a hidden cave which is supposedly the former home of Merlin the wizard.

📍 Clovelly, North Devon 📍

**note** you can get a transfer back to the top of Clovelly so you don’t have to walk back up! 😅

**SAVE** to your UK bucket list 😍

Ilfracombe In 4K. A North Devon Tourist Attraction.

Ilfracombe is a seaside resort and small harbour surrounded by cliffs on the North Devon coast, England. The parish stretches along the coast from the 'Coastguard Cottages' in Hele Bay toward the east and 4 miles along the Torrs to Lee Bay toward the west. The resort is hilly and the highest point within the parish boundary is at 'Hore Down Gate', 2 miles inland and 860 feet (270 m) above sea level. The landmark of Hillsborough Hill dominates the harbour and is the site of an Iron Age fortified settlement. In the built environment, the architectural-award-winning Landmark Theatre is either loved or hated for its unusual double-conical design. The 13th century parish church, Trinity, and the St Nicholas's Chapel (a lighthouse) on Lantern Hill, have been joined by the Damien Hirst owned statue, Verity, as points of interest. Ilfracombe has been settled since the Iron Age, when the Dumnonii (the Roman name for the inhabitants of the South-West) established a hill fort on the dominant hill, Hillsborough (formerly Hele's Barrow). The origin of the town's name has two possible sources. The first is that it is a derivative of the Anglo-Saxon Alfreinscoma - by which name it was noted in the Liber Exoniensis of 1086. The translation of this name (from Walter William Skeat of the department of Anglo Saxon at Cambridge University) means the Valley of the sons of Alfred. The second origin is that the name Ilfracombe was derived from Norse illf (bad), Anglo-Saxon yfel (evil ford) and Anglo-Saxon cumb (valley) perhaps from a Celtic source (compare Welsh cwm), thus 'The valley with the bad ford'. The manor house at Chambercombe in east Ilfracombe was recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book as being built by a Norman knight Champernon (from Chambernon in France) who landed with William of Normandy. It is also said to be haunted. Because of the natural layout of the harbour, Ilfracombe became a significant safe port (registered port of refuge) on the Bristol Channel. It also had trade routes between Kinsale and Tenby, which made the port stronger. In 1208 it was listed as having provided King John with ships and men to invade Ireland; in 1247 it supplied a ship to the fleet that was sent to conquer the Western Isles of Scotland; 6 ships, with 79 men were sent to support the siege of Calais. Ilfracombe was the last disembarkation point for two large forces sent to subdue the Irish. The building which sits on Lantern Hill by the harbour, known as St Nicholas's Chapel (built 1361) is reputed to be the oldest working lighthouse in the UK; a light/beacon has been there for over 650 years. The novelist Fanny Burney stayed in Ilfracombe in 1817. Her diary entries (31 July – 5 October) record early 19th century life in Ilfracombe: a captured Spanish ship; two ships in distress in a storm; the visit of Thomas Bowdler; and her lucky escape after being cut off by the tide. A few years later in the 1820s a set of four tunnels were hand carved by Welsh miners to permit access to the beaches by horse-drawn carriage as well as by foot. Previously access was gained by climbing the cliffs, rounding the point by boat, swimming or at the lowest tides clambering around the rocks of the point. These tunnels led to a pair of tidal pools, which in accordance with Victorian morals, were used for segregated male and female bathing. Whereas women were constrained to a strict dress code covering up the whole body, men generally swam naked. The tunnels are still viewable and are signposted as Tunnels Beaches. In 1856 writer Mary Ann Evans (pen-name George Eliot) accompanied George Henry Lewes to Ilfracombe to gather materials for his work Seaside Studies published in 1858. The town's first lifeboat was bought in 1828 but a permanent service was not available until the Royal National Lifeboat Institution built a lifeboat station at the bottom of Lantern Hill near the pier in 1866. The present station at Broad Street dates from 1996. In 1911, the Irish nationalist Anna Catherine Parnell (sister of Charles Stewart Parnell) drowned at Ilfracombe. Miss Alice Frances Louisa Phillips (b. 26 January 1891 at 85 High Street, Ilfracombe) and her father Mr Escott Robert Phillips (b. 1869 Cardiff) held 2nd Class Ticket No. 2 on the Titanic, and set sail from Southampton on 10 April 1912 heading for New Brighton, Pennsylvania. Alice was rescued in boat 12, her father was lost in the disaster.

Ilfracombe - Devon (Just Another Town?)

On our recent trip to Ilfracombe we spend 3 days exploring this quiet little coastal town.

if you are passing through make sure you go check out the statues that the town has to offer

Info on the Verity statue below
Verity is a 2012 stainless steel and bronze statue created by Damien Hirst. The 20.25-metre (66.4 ft) tall sculpture stands on the pier at the entrance to the harbour in Ilfracombe, Devon, looking out over the Bristol Channel towards South Wales.[1] It has been loaned to the town for 20 years. The name of the piece refers to truth and Hirst describes his work as a modern allegory of truth and justice.[1]

The statue depicts a pregnant woman holding aloft a sword while carrying the scales of justice and standing on a pile of law books.[1] Half of the sculpture shows the internal anatomy of the pregnant woman, with the foetus clearly visible. The stance has been described as a reference to Little Dancer of Fourteen Years by Edgar Degas, a c. 1880 work that previously inspired Hirst when he created Virgin Mother, another massive sculpture of a pregnant woman with her foetus exposed.[1]

The sculpture was cast in stainless steel and bronze in 40 separate sections by the Pangolin Editions foundry in Stroud. The sword, which gives the statue much of its height, and the upper left arm is one fibreglass piece.[2] Measuring 25cm (10 inches) higher than the Angel of the North, Verity became the tallest statue in the UK when it was put into place,[3] but is now surpassed by The Kelpies, near Falkirk, Scotland, at 30 metres (98 ft).

Members of North Devon Council referred to the controversial nature of the statue as a potential boost to tourism. In August 2013 councillors announced that the statue had a tremendous effect with people visiting the town solely to see Hirst's work.[4]

Hirst, who lives in Combe Martin, has loaned the statue to the town for 20 years starting from its erection on 16 October 2012.[1]

TUNNELS BEACHES, ILFRACOMBE, PRETTY WOW PLACE TO VISIT AND EXPLORE AND HANG! INSTA360 WALK THROUGH

This video is a walk-through of the tunnel in parts to the beaches and pool, which refreshes twice a day.

On a trip to Devon recently we visited Ilfracombe and were glad we went to the Tunnels beaches. Really pretty, really peaceful, fab pool, really impressive rock formations to wander among and wonder at the light on small creatures that look like seams of precious from afar. We found it quite magical, and plan to stay much longer next time. A super and interesting place is Ilfracombe, out of season slightly so not busy
