Ikast is a Danish town in the Central Denmark Region (Region Midtjylland).

Geography[edit]
The town is situated in the middle of Jutland. The town is situated 5 km from Hammerum, which is the Eastern outskirts of Herning Municipality. Ikast is situated 28 km from Silkeborg, and 69 km away from Aarhus.
Demography[edit]
As of 1 January 2017, the population of the town is 15,462.[1]
History[edit]
Up until late in the nineteenth century, Ikast was nothing more than a few buildings surrounding the church. During the industrialization, Ikast established a strong presence in Denmark as one of the main towns for the textile industry, which was the main industry in the area until the start of globalization, where production jobs were outsourced.
The opening of the railway in the 1850s led to an increase in population, as the existing part of town surrounding the church, and the new part of town, built around the railway, grew into each other.[2]
The church was originally a Roman church, built in the 13th century. The old church burned down in 1904, and was rebuilt into the new church, which was finished in 1907. The church was expanded several times, with the latest expansion happening in 2005.[3]

In de regio Hovedstaden met de hoofdstad Kopenhagen leven 1.645.825 inwoners, 642 inw. per km² (1.603.008 zonder Bornholm, 812 inw. per km². Stand 1 januari 2008). Daarmee concentreert zich 30 procent van de bevolking van Denemarken in de hoofdstadregio.
In de volgende tabel zijn voor alle sinds de gemeentelijke herindeling van 2007 bestaande gemeenten, de resultaten van de officiële schatting door het bureau voor de statistiek uit 1980, 1990, 2000 en 2006 (telkens 1 januari) vermeld, alsmede de regio, waartoe de gemeente behoort. Herning is a young city - it was founded in 1913. It has strong influences and expanded rapidly due to the textile industry. Nowadays, these traditions are still present with some textile companies left and with the design educations based at VIA Design in Birk.
The industries and companies have broadened a lot since then. Herning has a very varied business environment within metal, production, IT services, energy, hospitality and service industries.
