During the winter months, Britain is on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which is 5 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time and 10 hours behind Sydney. Western standard time is five hours behind.

From late March until late October, the clocks go forward one hour to British Summer Time (BST).

Britain is officially metric, in line with the rest of Europe. However, imperial measures are still in use, especially for road distances, which are measured in miles. Imperial pints and gallons are 20 per cent larger than US measures.

National Forest Way Escapades: The Adventure Continues

For lovers of English forests and woodlands, the the National Forest Way is a must to experience. It's a long distance path first opened in 2014, which takes in around 75 miles of footpaths. Stretching from Beacon Hill Country Park in Leicestershire to the stunning National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. Following this route will take the hiker through ancient and modern woodlands, and through the evolving and historic heart of the UK Midlands region: fascinating snippets of industry, nature, agriculture, villages and towns can be found along the Way.

This is the second section of the route, which begins in Leicestershire and ends up in Derbyshire.

This leg of the Way runs from ex-mining village Bagworth to charming and historic Ticknall. From Bagworth the route first heads north-west down a hill and then through Bagworth New Wood, before jaunting over some muddy fields and new forest areas to the village of Battram. At Battram the route heads northwards through the nearby woods, past a quarry and then over some more fields to end up in Ellistown. Passing through the village streets, the route soon emerges back into some fields – but not for long – because it then passes over an old railway line and into Donnington le Heath on the outskirts of Coalville. From here there’s a sometimes challenging route west through soggy wetlands and across ploughed fields to pass close to Ibstock. From here it’s a cinder path through Sence Valley Forest Park, briefly emerging along Heather Lane, before heading west over some fields and through the extensive Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Wood. Dogs walking is a big thing in these woods!

Leaving the Queen's woods behind, the route goes through exclusive Normanton le Heath, and then tracks over a lot of fields to nearby charming Packinton. Passing by the village church, the route takes a solid trackway over the A42 road, and then heads eastward alongside the road in the fields before heading north and into the town of Ashby de la Zouch. Walking through the town streets for longer than planned - due to a closed pathway – the route finally leaves the urban environment behind, passing under the A511 heading north as it does. Then it’s north over the fields, and through oak-rich Park Pale wood and then across yet more farmland to Heath End. Passing briefly over the Staunton Harold Estate, the route heads north through the Diminsdale Nature Reserve and enters into Derbyshire.

After that, it’s a case of following the roads through Calke up to the reservoir, and then a grand loop around the Calke Abbey Park nature reserve. Emerging heading due north along a roadway, the route comes out in Ticknall, finally ending at the village hall car park.

La gare de Londres Waterloo
