WOOLLEY: Wakefield Parish #21 of 30
Split into at least four different sections, all wildly different to each other, we come today to a place that calls home, the top of a wide escarpment – the fancy term for a ridge of land that slopes down into a valley below. In this case that valley contains both the River Dearne and the M1. This escarpment is also the highest elevated piece of land East of the Pennines.
We have a main village that’s very old and retains a lot of its stone buildings thanks to the squires of the village in the 19th century – The Wentworths – who, when they acquired the land here, also gained neighbouring Notton. The two villages are pretty similar to each other – very old, with a lot of character and history to go with them.
Then a little further South on the border with Barnsley is a place which hasn’t existed for all that long. Since 2003 in fact, this part of the parish has grown and grown, built as it is on the site of a former colliery, one of the largest in all of Yorkshire. It is the principle reason why in the space of only eight years, the population of this place absolutely soared from 575 to way over 1,300.
That escarpment then gives us some nice views over the local area, before we drive down through the village of Haigh and under the Hallam Line between Sheffield and Leeds towards Junction 38 of the M1. There, we pick up the motorway and check out the services which also fall within these parish boundaries.
Plenty to look at, plenty to take in, this one is much bigger than it looks on the map. This is WOOLLEY.

Forgotten Spas of Yorkshire
We've all heard of Harrogate, Ilkley and Scarborough - but what about Slaithwaite, Askern or Wetherby? They've all had them, but only shone brightly for a very short time - mostly 1820-1890 and then disappeared.
Others like Ripon came on far too late 1904/1905 and places like Boston Spa were left behind by the age of steam - although that mode of transport didn't help Goathland (North York Moors) that didn't even have a spa spring - although has the 70ft high Mallyan Spour waterfall!

In the 18th century, Wakefield traded in corn, coal mining and textiles.

WINTERSETT: Wakefield Parish #11 of 30
The Wakefield train keeps rolling and today it passes through one of the smallest villages in the entire district as we come to the Heronry, some 350 acres of land that plays host to some of the most amazing wildlife in West Yorkshire. Situated on former mining land, one of the three bodies of water in this video is a former opencast mine, one of the deepest in the country at that, and what it's been turned into now is something rather spectacular.
That opencast mine is now the stunning Anglers Country Park which has a central lake surrounded by a two mile woodland trail, liked to Haw Park Wood next door, and with sculptures from the popular children's picturebook Room on the Broom to find along the way. There are bird hides, plenty of wildfowl and a whole lot open space and clean fresh air to attract everyone to this wonderful corner of Wakefield.
Anglers Country Park certainly lives up to its name, The area is full of fishing lakes for the keen angler, including both reservoirs and Botany Lake, all controlled by local angling clubs and Leeds Angling Club as well in the case of the main reservoir. The pub in the village is called the Anglers Retreat, perhaps popular with fishermen and walkers in the Heronry alike, and perhaps why it was named runner up in 2013 for Best Pub.
The village itself is tiny. Less than 100 people live in it, and the majority of people that come here will be using public transport for access to the Heronry rather than anything else I would imagine, but that doesn't stop me having a little wander through the place for all about a minute, taking in the small cluster of houses and the pub and the various footpaths that link to Anglers.
This one is such a peaceful one to cover, lots to see, but not all of it to do with a village. Rather, this one is epitome of wild and rural, where there really are more animals than people. This is WINTERSETT.

Walking Tour 4K. Halifax - Wakefield Gate - Magna Via - Medieval Route. England HD 1080p
The 'Magna Via' is the medieval road eastwards out of Halifax. It was the main route to the manorial centre of Wakefield and thus came to be known as the 'Wakefield Gate'.This walk encompasses part of the route that Anne Lister took to walk to Halifax to undertake business or survey her lands and coal fields. Walking in the footsteps of Anne Lister.

ACKWORTH: Wakefield Parish #5 of 30
The long wait for another Wakefield parish on the channel is over! This one took me forever to make simply because of how big this parish is! At over 7,000 people this part of Wakefield district is loaded – and I mean loaded – with things to see. So much so, that I have absolutely no doubt that I will have missed some things here, but there’s only so much the limitations of my GoPro battery would allow. I think I’ve got the main bits though.
Split into four (maybe five if you count Brackenhill as a separate village) areas, it took me almost three hours to get through everything. Starting with the village cemetery, from which you can see Six Arches, the railway viaduct that was briefly mentioned in the Badsworth video, we journey around Moor Top which was famed for quarrying, Brackenhill which had a theatre and a goods railway line, before heading up to an area which has some of the most amazing architecture I’ve seen so far in West Yorkshire in the form of a Quaker school.
There are two churches here, one much older than the other but both connected by virtue of the fact that the newer one was more of a chapel of ease when originally built. The older church also has links to the island of Lindisfarne in Northumberland – a parish which I cannot wait to visit by the way – as the body of St Cuthbert travelled with monks who stopped here on their pilgrimage.
Stone quarries, railway lines, a quaker run boarding school, medieval churches…what more could you want? Well there’s plenty more, you just have to watch the video to see what else I uncovered in this amazing part of the City of Wakefield.
This is the huge parish of ACKWORTH.
