10 Best Places to Visit in Idaho | Discover the U.S. States

Idaho’s nickname is the Gem State. This is very apt, since the 43rd state is truly a gem among states. In the north along Interstate 90, you’ll find lush green forests, picturesque lakes and the historic silver mining town of Kellogg. In the south along Interstate 84, you’ll find deserts and history – the Oregon Trail that brought pioneers to the West passes through here. And in-between, you’ll find Highway 12, a scenic byway that parallels the Clearwater River that Lewis and Clark followed on their expedition to the Pacific.

You’ll also find great recreational opportunities among the best places to visit in Idaho: great skiing and golfing, camping and hiking, and some great mountain biking in the Hiawatha Trail that starts at the Montana border and ends 17 gorgeous, graveled miles later.

EXPLORE the Hiawatha National Forest Area LIKE A LOCAL

In this episode I drove 400 miles and only had 2 days to see the most fantastic places while RV camping on this Upper Peninsula Michigan/Lake Superior, Hiawatha National Forest adventure. I suspected this was going to be different than any others and boy was I right! If you are planning to visit the Munising MI/Au Train Michigan area… here are my 7 MUST-SEE places.

We camped in the Hiawatha National Forest at the Bay Furnace campground, a Michigan State Forest campground and this was the best location on the south shores of Lake Superior for us to explore the area. Nearby is Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Au Train Falls, upper Michigan waterfalls, Miners Falls and Miners Castle. These sightseeing attractions were amazing!

Stop #1
We found a very rough road that lead to majestic rocks on Lake Superior shoreline by Au Train Bay – located in between Au Train and Munising.

Stop #2
Au Train Beach

Stop #4
Pizza – Zaf’s Party Store

Stop #5
Au Train Falls – breathtaking upper Michigan waterfalls!

Stop #6
Miners Castle at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Miners Castle has an overlook above some of the Pictured Rocks (standing atop the dramatic sandstone cliffs that border Lake Superior for 15 miles Northeast of Munising, Michigan. The views were amazing. Next time I visit I will view Pictured Rocks via a boat and there are commercial boat tours from the Munising city dock.

While here we also took the Lower Overlook Trail to Miners Castle – Big Pictured Rocks
And the Lake Superior beach here was great for rock collecting.

Stop #7
Miners Falls – a short trail leading to the waterfalls to these spectacular Upper peninsula Michigan waterfalls.

If you are looking for Munising MI things to do, I recommend this list of epic places. I can’t wait to come back for more Hiawatha National Forest adventures!

Located near Wallace, Idaho is 15 miles of a converted rail to trail bike path that travels through 10 tunnels and 7 sky-high trestles.

(Completed this ride on 4th of July weekend 2022) As part of our summer plans, we not only enjoyed biking down this spectacular path, but decided to ride all the way back up. Don't worry, your pass comes with a shuttle service if you want to hitch a ride back up the hill.

One of the best things to do in Idaho is to explore its stunning national parks and wilderness areas. Yellowstone National Park, partially located in Idaho, showcases geothermal wonders and diverse wildlife. The Sawtooth National Recreation Area boasts breathtaking mountain vistas and crystal-clear alpine lakes, perfect for hiking, camping, and fishing enthusiasts. These natural wonders are just a glimpse of the many places to visit in Idaho that showcase its raw beauty.

For those seeking unique things to do in Idaho, a visit to Craters of the Moon National Monument is a must. This otherworldly landscape of volcanic formations and lava fields offers visitors a chance to explore caves and witness the state's geological history firsthand. Another distinctive Idaho attraction is the Shoshone Falls, often called the Niagara of the West, which stands taller than its famous eastern counterpart and provides a spectacular backdrop for photography and sightseeing.

Idaho's cities and towns also offer a variety of fun things to do. Boise, the state capital, blends urban sophistication with outdoor recreation. Visitors can enjoy the Boise River Greenbelt, a tree-lined pathway perfect for cycling and jogging, or explore the vibrant downtown area with its shops, restaurants, and cultural venues. The Idaho State Capitol building is another notable attraction, offering free tours and insights into the state's history and governance.

For history buffs, Idaho's rich past provides numerous opportunities for exploration. The Old Idaho Penitentiary in Boise offers a glimpse into 19th-century prison life, while the Lewis and Clark Trail allows visitors to retrace the steps of the famous explorers. These historical sites are among the top things to do in Idaho for those interested in the state's heritage.

Adventure seekers will find no shortage of exciting activities in Idaho. White water rafting on the Salmon River, known as the River of No Return, provides heart-pounding thrills amidst stunning scenery. Skiing and snowboarding at world-class resorts like Sun Valley offer winter sports enthusiasts top-notch slopes and amenities. These adrenaline-pumping experiences are just a few examples of the many Idaho activities available throughout the year.

As you plan your Idaho travel, consider incorporating some of the state's lesser-known gems into your itinerary. Riding the Route of the Hiawatha in Northern Idaho!

After a few weeks in Washington, we headed back to Idaho, but this time to the Northern part of the state to ride the Route of the Hiawatha. This 15 mile trail (one way) has 10 train tunnels and 7 trestles and has been named a Hall of Fame trail by the Rail-to-Trail Conservancy.

Since we do not own bikes, we rented eBikes, which proved to be a bit tricky to get into the van, and had the BEST time pedaling down the trail and then using the power to get us back up. The Route of the Hiawatha is so beautiful and unique and we had such a fun day!

NOTE: eBikes with throttles are allowed on the Route of the Hiawatha. Their website says they are not, but we spoke with the bike rental company and they confirmed that they were voted in last October at the state level, but the trail website has not been updated.

Cycling the Route of the Hiawatha in Northern Idaho

The Route of the Hiawatha or Hiawatha Trail in Northern Idaho is only about 15 miles long, but it is one of the most scenic Rail-Trails in America. Bosting 10 tunnels and 7 high trestles, this bike trail is built into a nearly pristine valley in the Northern Rocky Mountains. The trail starts up high at the Eastern Portal of the Taft Tunnel and finishes at the low point in Pearson. The result is a long slow downhill all the way, like floating a lazy river. You can complete the trail with little effort in an hour or two, but there are many scenic stops along the way. There is a shuttle service that will take you and your bike back to the top of the trail, or you can ride the trail all the way back up the hill. Thanks for coming along as I take a ride down the route of the Hiawatha.

Hiawatha Trail Bike Ride, Idaho

The Route of the Hiawatha near Coeur de Alene is considered the “crown jewel” of the rail to trail rides for a reason!

With 10 train tunnels and 7 sky-high trestles along this historic 15-mile mountain biking route, biking the Hiawatha Trail is an unforgettable experience. And the best part it's super easy for young kids making it a great experience the whole family can enjoy!

The craziest part about this bike ride is the first tunnel that is a mile long in the pitch black darkness!!!! It's terrifying but so worth it! The views on the trail are incredible and cannot be missed on an Idaho road trip!
