Herne Bay is a seaside town in Kent, South East England. On the south coast of the Thames Estuary, it is 6 miles north of Canterbury and 4 miles east of Whitstable.

Herne Bay can often get a lot of flack from other people in Kent, but it's actually a great place to live or to visit.

People often end up comparing it to other nearby towns like Whitstable or Canterbury, obsessing over what it hasn't got rather than what it has.

The small seaside town has it all - from history, beautiful views of the sea and so much more that can be overlooked.

Herne Bay's seafront is home to the world's first freestanding purpose-built Clock Tower, built in 1837; from the late Victorian period until 1978, the town had the second-longest pier in the United Kingdom.

Herne Bay began as a small shipping town and community, receiving goods and passengers from London en route to Canterbury and Dover. The town rose to prominence as a seaside resort during the early 19th century after the building of a pleasure pier and promenade by a group of London investors, and reached its heyday in the late Victorian era. Its popularity as a holiday destination has declined over the past decades, due to the increase in foreign travel and to a lesser degree exposure to flooding that has prevented the town's redevelopment.

One of the oldest buildings in Herne Bay is the late 18th-century inn The Ship, which served as the focal point for the small shipping and farming community that first inhabited the town.

In the 1830s, a group of London investors, who recognised Herne Bay's potential as a seaside resort, built a wooden pier and a promenade on the town's seafront.

Herne Bay Clock Tower
You can't miss the striking architecture of Herne Bay clock tower. Built in 1837, it has been refurbished in recent years and an information centre including memorabilia and information about its history set up nearby. In recent years the addition of the lights on the building during the evenings has been really nice to see and add a little bit more scenery to an evening stroll along the beachfront.

Herne Bay Pier History
The pier is one of the more well-known tourist destinations in the town but it has a very colourful history. The original wooden pier had to be dismantled in 1871 after its owners went into liquidation and sea worms had damaged the wood. The replacement pier was the second longest in the country, behind only the pier at Southend-on-Sea

Herne Bay Beach and Seafront
The seafront has a 2 miles (3 km) shingle beach. The seafront features a Victorian bandstand and gardens, amusement arcades, and children's play areas. Landmarks by the seafront include the Clock Tower, the sea defence jetty, the off-shore World War II sea fort and the off-shore wind farm. There are seaside cafés, fresh seafood restaurants, guesthouses, beach huts and more

Places to see in ( Whitstable - UK )

Whitstable is a seaside town on the north coast of Kent in south-east England, 8 kilometres north of Canterbury and 3 kilometres west of Herne Bay. Whitstable was famous for its 'Native Oysters' which were collected from beds beyond the low water mark from Roman times until the mid-20th century. This is celebrated at the annual Whitstable Oyster Festival.

In 1830, one of the earliest passenger railway services was opened by the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway Company. In 1832, the company built a harbour and extended the line to handle coal and other bulk cargos for the City of Canterbury. The railway has since closed but the harbour still plays an important role in the town's economy.

Whitstable is 3 kilometres (2 mi) west of the seaside town of Herne Bay, 8 kilometres (5 mi) north-east of the town of Faversham and 8 kilometres (5 mi) north of the city of Canterbury; several small villages lie in between. The suburbs/villages of Tankerton, Swalecliffe and Chestfield are at the eastern end of the town, Seasalter at the west, and South Street at the south. Chestfield has its own parish council. An area of protected woodland and grassland called Duncan Down lies to the south-east.

Whitstable railway station is on the Chatham Main Line, which runs between Ramsgate in East Kent and London Victoria. Other stations on this line include Broadstairs, Margate, Herne Bay, Faversham, Gillingham, Rochester and Bromley South.

Herne Bay Walk: Town Centre & Beach【4K】

Located on the north coast of Kent, and around 60 miles east of central London, is the town of Herne Bay.

The town takes its name from the neighbouring village of Herne. This in turn is derived from Old English 'hyrne', meaning 'angle/corner of land'. Historically, Herne village acted as the control for goods passing through the bay to Canterbury around six miles away.

Until the early 19th century, Herne Bay was a small fishing community. This began to change from around the 1830s when a group of investors from London built a wooden pier and a promenade on the seafront. Tourists were able to reach here via paddle steamers travelling between London and Margate.

Construction of the original wooden pier was completed in 1832. It stood at 1,101 metres (3613 ft) long. This was dismantled in the early 1870s, and a second pier was completed in 1873. This measured a more modest 98 metres (320 ft). In 1899 a third pier was completed. Measuring 1,154 metres (3,787 ft), the pier stands to this day, albeit with a twist. Between 1978 and 1979 it suffered storm damage that saw the collapse of the central section, which was later demolished. The pier head, however, was too solid for demolition, which left it isolated at sea. This remains the case to this day, as can be seen at various points during the walk.

In 1837 Herne Bay's clock tower was built. It is believed to be the UK's first freestanding purpose-built clock tower. Built from Portland Stone, it was a gift to the town from Ann Thwaytes - the widow of a London tea merchant. The clock was wound manually all the way until 1971 when an electric unit was installed.

In 1861 the railway arrived at Herne Bay. The initial station was temporary, and was replaced in 1863. Today the station is situated on the Ramsgate branch of the Chatham Main Line. Trains to London typically take around 80 to 100 minutes, with some high speed services operating here.

In 1941 aviator Amy Johnson disappeared after crashing her plane into the Thames Estuary near Herne Bay, where she is presumed to have died. She had achieved fame in 1930 when she became the first woman to fly solo from London to Australia.
