Palestine wall in Bethlehem Cisjordania, West Bank Palestine

The Israeli West Bank barrier, comprising the West Bank Wall and the West Bank fence, is a separation barrier built by Israel along the Green Line and inside parts of the West Bank. It is a contentious element of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict: Israel describes the wall as a necessary security barrier against Palestinian terrorism, whereas Palestinians describe it as an element of racial segregation and a representation of Israeli apartheid. At a total length of 708 kilometres upon completion, the route traced by the barrier is more than double the length of the Green Line, with 15% of its length running along the Green Line or inside Israel, and the remaining 85% running as much as 18 kilometres inside the West Bank, effectively isolating about 9% of the land and approximately 25,000 Palestinians from the rest of the Palestinian territory.

The barrier was built by Israel following a wave of Palestinian political violence and incidents of terrorism inside Israel during the Second Intifada, which began in September 2000 and ended in February 2005. The Israeli government cites a decreased number of suicide bombings carried out from the West Bank as evidence of its efficacy, after such attacks fell from 73 between 2000 and July 2003 (the completion of the first continuous segment) to 12 between August 2003 and the end of 2006. While the barrier was initially presented as a temporary security measure at a time of heightened tensions, it has since been associated with a future political border between Israel and the State of Palestine.
The barrier has drawn criticism from Palestinians, human rights groups, and members of the international community, who have all argued that it serves as evidence of Israel's intent to annex Palestinian land under the guise of security. It has also been alleged that the construction of the wall aims to undermine the Israeli–Palestinian peace process by unilaterally establishing new de facto borders. Key points of dispute are that it substantially deviates eastward from the Green Line, severely restricts the travel of many Palestinians, and impairs their ability to commute to work within the West Bank or to Israel. The International Court of Justice issued an advisory opinion finding that the barrier qualifies as a violation of international law. In 2003, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution that charged Israel's building of the barrier to be a violation of international law and demanded its removal by a vote of 144–4 with 12 abstentions.
The walled sections of the barrier have become a canvas for graffiti art, with its Palestinian side illustrating opposition to the barrier, Palestinian resistance, their right to return, as well as human rights in general.

Journey Through Palestine - Travel Documentary

Palestine means a lot of different things to many people, and may not be the most obvious travel destination. It is often associated with conflict and political unrest, overlooking the fact that it’s also a beautiful and fascinating region, with a vibrant culture, incredible historic landmarks, spectacular natural scenery, inspiring religious sites, tasty food, and friendly, welcoming people.

On this journey, I’m traveling through the Holy Land, a region important to the three main monotheistic religions, and known today as Israel and Palestine.

In this first episode, I’m exploring the West Bank, the largest and most accessible part of Palestine. From stunning natural scenery to intriguing historic sites. From the busy streets of Ramallah to the narrow alleyways of Nablus’ old city. From religious landmarks in Hebron and Bethlehem to the ancient ruins of Jericho. Along the way, I meet some of the people that call this land home, and sample the local cuisine.

I’ll do so from a traveler’s perspective, focusing on the positive stories and things to do. But here and there I also mention the conflict between Israel and Palestine, since it has impacted the lives of many people in the region. For those interested in the politics and modern history of the region, however, I recommend to read, watch, and listen to as many different sources as you can.

This is my first long trip after the pandemic started, and I’m grateful for the chance to travel again. It’s also my second visit to the region. While much of the footage is from the end of 2021 (including the ‘vlog style’ parts), I’ll also use some background material from 5 years earlier.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We start this journey in Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus Christ, with its impressive Church of the Nativity at its core. After visiting the church, I explore the streets around it, meeting people and eating food in the bustling bazaar. There are many other places worth your time in and around Bethlehem, including the Milk Grotto, an olive oil factory (press), Shepherd’s Fields, and the Mar Saba monastery, surrounded by arid mountains.

Hebron is the next stop, a city in the South of Palestine, and (among other things) famous for its glassblowing factories, and also the Tomb of the Patriarch, or Ibrahimi Mosque. The streets around this place are divided between the local Palestinian community and Israeli settlers. As a tourist, you can visit both areas. At the end of the day, my guide Salwa takes me to a traditional Palestinian restaurant, where we eat some delicious food.

We continue this trip in Jericho, regarded as the oldest city in the world. Located next to the Dead Sea, it’s also one of the lowest cities on our planet, and can get very hot in Summer. Other sights to visit around Jericho include the Dead Sea, Nabi Musa, Qasr-al-Yahud, and St George’s Monastery, built into a cliff in Wadi Qelt.

Getting lost in the narrow alleys of Nablus’ old city was among my favorite things to do. There’s a surprise waiting for you around every corner, and perhaps the best one was the Al Aqsa kunafeh store, which is said to make the best version of this Palestinian dessert, which is popular around the Middle East.

We finish this journey in Ramallah, a young and dynamic city, attracting people from around the region to find work and get educated. It’s a commercial hub with a strong entrepreneurial spirit, and provides a different perspective on this part of Palestine.

The campground at Hebron, Nebraska. A guide to lesser known sites in small town America S06E31

Please click on the link at the end of this video to see actual footage of this place.
I hope to illustrate some of the lesser known places that one can camp in the Central Western states and mostly Nebraska, Wyoming and Idaho. There are many campgrounds and other places which relatively unknown or overlooked which I feel would be of interest to tourists / vacationers and both tent campers and RV'ers.
I found many of these places to camp with Google's camping near _______ search terms. I was amazed how many small towns and state wildlands allow camping. In addition, Colorado, Wyoming and Idaho publish very complete guides to lesser known campsites.
However, one must take care in selecting these sites. Sometimes, it is only a dirt lot with no services and no bathrooms suitable only for self-contained RV units. Others, are down narrow rough roads suitable only for SUV's and trucks. Finally, and most importantly I review and rate how good I thought these campsites are and how suitable it is to tent camping. Sometimes they are true undiscovered gems which are little used or unknown outside the local community.

Road Trip #812 - Old Red Old Ten Scenic Byway - Hebron/Glen Ullin, North Dakota

Road Trip #812 - Old Red Old Ten Scenic Byway - Hebron/Glen Ullin, North Dakota

In part 3 of our Old Red Old Ten Scenic Byway series, we enter Morton County, north Dakota, and pass through the cities of Hebron and Glen Ullin. We finish up as we run out of pavement.

The Old Red Old Ten Scenic Byway follows old Highway 10, as well as the Old Red Autotrail, which predates the 1926 US Numbered Highway system. The Old Red Trail was scouted and laid out between 1913 and 1914 by the American Automobile Association, or Triple-A, to guide motorists across the state of North Dakota. The original route was planned to cover from Fargo to Medora, across the northern part of the state, but scouts moved to the southern part of North Dakota because of difficulty in crossing the badlands in the western part of the state. The southerly route also provided more of a direct path to Yellowstone National Park, a popular tourist destination. These early autotrails were unpaved, and often just a muddy path, in this case, marked by poles with red bands. In 1923, North Dakota implemented a numbered state highway system, and Old Red became State Highway 3. In 1927, the route became part of the new national highway system, and was given the number 10. In 1934, only about 100 miles of North Dakota's 9000 miles of highways were paved, and improvement efforts weren't made until the 1950s. In 1956, President Eisenhower signed the Federal Highway Act, and the first stretch of nearby I-94 was opened in 1958 between Jamestown and Valley City. Many parts of Old Red and US-10 became Interstate Highway. Other parts of US-10 ran nearby and parallel to I-94, and eventually, all US Highway 10 west of Fargo, North Dakota was eliminated from the US Highway system. The route that we'll be following throughout this video is Old US-10 and the Old Red Trail. More recently, in 2006, citizens of Morton and Stark Counties petitioned to create a scenic byway to bring motorists off of the Interstate and through the small towns, and in 2008, that became what is now called the Old Red Old Ten Scenic Byway.

When I research new bike trails to ride I use the AllTrails app (love it!) for discovery and YouTube to see what the trail looks like. Many times, any questions I may have (What does the trail look like? How well taken care of is the trail? How wide is the trail? Does it look like a trail we can pull a kids trailer on? How does the new detour go? Are there many places to stop? Where does it tend to flood? How does this trail connect to that trail?) can be answered by a simple video like this. Unfortunately there are a lot of trails that I can’t find videos on or they are way out of date. Hopefully this video will help others who may want to quickly see a trail to decide if it’s a good fit for their ride style.
