TOP 3 places to see in New Plymouth/Taranaki New Zealand
This video has the Top 3 places to see in the small town of New Plymouth Taranaki. New Plymouth is located on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. It is known for its 'sunny climate' and beautiful art galleries and beautiful parks.
In this video, I visited 3 places which I think are the most important places to see in New Plymouth. First is Pukekura Park, which is described as the 'jewel of New Plymouth'. It is a massive park that extends up to 52 hectares and is located at the heart of the city. I parked my car on Shortland Street and entered the park from there. I also tried their coffee at a cafe called 'Tea House on the Lake'. They also have this man-made waterfall that turns on by pressing a button. The park is actually so huge that we didn't have time to navigate through it as we didn't have enough time.
Next, we went to Te Rewa Rewa Bridge which is a pedestrian and bicycle shared bridge across the Waiwhakaiho River in New Plymouth. On a good day, you can see Mount Taranki from there. By the looks of it, it kind of looks like the ribs of a dinosaur.
Lastly, we went to the Taranki/Egmont visitor centre located 30 minutes from the city centre. This is where you can see Mt. Taranaki up close if you don't fancy doing the hike up to the summit. They also have different day hikes that span from 1-4 hours and 8-10 hours for the summit climb. If you're into the Maori history and culture they have displays at the top level and also a safety video before climbing Mt. Taranki.
Before coming home, we checked out The Three Sisters and Elephant Rock which located 1 hour 45 min north of New Plymouth. This place has the spectacular rock formation of the 'three sisters' and the big elephant rock.

2 Hidden Waterfalls at Hawera's Waihi beach - GO Taranaki
2 Hidden Waterfalls at Hawera's Waihi beach - GO Taranaki
I love walking along Waihi beach the huge cliffs are truly epic. Today we check out two hidden waterfalls at Waihi Beach. The first is semi viable from the gravel ramp and at the car park you can hear it - a viewing platform should be built at the car park so visitors can see this waterfall. (unfortunately the sun didn't cooperate with this footage of the first waterfall 1:07 )
The second water fall 2:48 at Hawera's Waihi Beach is definitely not visible from the beach and is on private land - Land owner's permission was granted for this footage.
How do you get to Waihi Beach? From South Road (State Highway 3) in Hawera you can turn west into Denby Road. The drive is 4 minutes or the walkway along Denby Road will take 38 minutes one way to cover the 3.2km to Waihi Beach.
The descent to Waihi Beach is a steep gravel track from the car park at the end of Denby Road. Its a well worth visiting Taranaki attraction.
Where is Hawera? Hawera is located in Taranaki New Zealand, it is South Taranaki's largest town. Hawera is 71 kilometers south of New Plymouth on State Highway 3 and 20 minutes drive from Mount Taranaki.
Hawera means “the burnt place” or “breath of fire. Approximately 12,000 people live in Hawera.
If you are looking for things to do in Taranaki, or are researching your next New Zealand holiday this beach should be on your list. I met some tourists from Western Australia while walking along the beach, they loved it.
If you are looking for other Taranaki stuff to do subscribe to our channel GO Taranaki and click the notification bell to be alerted of our other adventures around our beautiful region on the west coast of New Zealand!

5 Things To Do In Taranaki
Hey what's up everyone, this week I traveled to Taranaki on the West Coast of New Zealand. In 2017 this region was named the second best region in the world to visit by Lonely Planet. I had 36 hours on the ground and pretty crappy weather. So instead of scaling Mount Taranaki and/or checking out their coastal walkway on my electric skateboard, I decided to visit five or so places that didn't require fine weather.
The top 5 locations were:
1. The Govett Brewster / Len Lye Art Gallery,
2. Pukekura Park,
3. Dawson Falls,
4. Normanby Dam,
5. The Surf Highway.
I also visited:
6. Paritutu Rock,
7. The Cape Egmont Lighthouse & Lighthouse Museum,
8. The Puke Ariki Museum, and
9. A small portion of the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway.

Mount Taranaki is one of the most beautiful mountains in the entire world, there is just no way around that fact! The mountain comes straight from sea level, and rises in a perfect cone to TOWER over the surrounding landscape. The hikes in #mounttaranaki are also next level:
- Veronica Loop - the #veronicaloop is a nice 3km walk through the New Zealand bush that offers great views of Mount Taranaki on a clear day
- Pouakai Reflective Tarns - the #pouakaitarns is the best hike in Taranaki, as it offers the chance to have the MOST GORGEOUS view of the mountain there is. The tarns are small lakes that, on a still & clear day, offer a perfect reflection of Taranaki in all her glory. Even on a windy day, when the reflection isn't perfect, the view is still sublime.
- Dawson Falls - #dawsonfalls is the shortest hike in Taranaki, just a few hundred metres from the parking lot, however even though it is low effort this hike is high reward. The Dawson Falls view from the base is awesome, and you can get so close to the waterfall you are almost right underneath it!
- Wilkies Pools - The #wilkiespools are an awesome natural occurring set of cascading pools and waterfalls that also offer a picturesque view of Mount Taranaki! There is even a natural slide in the rocks that you can slide in from one pool to another, and it is SUPER FUN! It can be a bit cold though, so it is best to visit Wilkies Pools on a hot day
- Paritutu Rock - #parituturock is located almost in downtown New Plymouth, right on the edge of town. This is more of a climb than a hike, and it is very short and quick. The views are great, and this can be a perfect morning activity for a day in New Plymouth
New Plymouth is also full of tons of cool free activities. The Coastal Walkway, Puke Ariki Museum, Te Rewa Rewa Bridge are among the many incredible things to do here, all for free! Located outside Taranaki a ways is the Normandy Dam, where you can go and literally SLIDE DOWN THE DAM! It is SO fun, and even more fun if you have a boogie board to slide on. Enjoy!

Discover the SECRET Lookout with the Best View of Mt Taranaki
In this video, you will see Dawson Falls and Best Lookout for Mt Taranaki Lake Mangamahoe. We have also visited Hollard Gardens wich is show in the video as well.
Hey everyone! Today, we're headed to Dawson Falls, starting our journey from our cozy Airbnb in Hawera. The drive, as you'll see in the video, takes about 40 minutes and treats us to stunning views.Be sure to keep an eye out for Mt Taranaki along the way—it's often referred to as the Mt Fuji of New Zealand, and it's a sight you won't want to miss!
We've entered Egmont National Park—the road's a bit narrow, but the drive's been delightful. The carpark was jam-packed, so we waited a while to find a spot for our ride.
The pathway to Dawson Falls starts right by the carpark, offering two options: one leads to a scenic viewpoint, while the other takes you straight to the base. We opted for the viewpoint first, then descended via the stairs to reach the base. The view from Dawson Falls' base is simply breathtaking, as captured in our video.
On our way back to the carpark, we have visited the Dawson Falls Power Station. let me tell Some fun facts about Dawson Falls
power station:
this is One of the world’s oldest generators which is still in continuous operation and it has been keeping visitors staying at Dawson Falls warm since 1935.
The generator was built by General Electric company in New York in between 1899 to 1901.
In 1935 the power station was installed to service tourist accommodation at Dawson Falls in the Mt Egmont National Park.
surprisingly The power station still produces electricity and
Hydropower from the station is still used for some purposes such as heating and lighting of Dawson Falls Mountain Lodge.
Our next stop was Hollard Gardens, just a 15-minute drive from Dawson Falls. It's a beautiful spot for families, with a fun playground for kids.
Near the reception, there's a cozy corner where you can treat yourself to complimentary hot drinks—simply step up and craft your ideal cup!
hollard gardens is renowned for their extensive collection of rhododendrons, camellias, and azaleas, which bloom spectacularly during the spring season.
It features several heritage trees, including magnificent magnolias and towering kauri trees, some of which are over a century old.
Hollard Gardens is Managed by the Taranaki Regional Council, Hollard Gardens is not just a tourist attraction but also a hub for community events and educational programs about gardening and conservation.
Lake Mangamahoe offers stunning panoramic views of Mount Taranaki and its reflection on the lake's calm waters, making it a popular spot for photography.this lake is loved by people who enjoy nature.
The name Mangamahoe comes from the Maori language, meaning stream of the mahoe tree, reflecting the area's rich cultural heritage.
Lake Mangamahoe Originally constructed as an artificial reservoir to supply water for New Plymouth City, but now the lake serves as a recreational area for locals and visitors alike.

🗺️ Exploring Stratford in Taranaki - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 52: Today we are heading into Stratford in Taranaki to explore the town that calls itself the Shakespeare Town of New Zealand!
Yesterday - Day 51 -
Tomorrow – Day 53 –
About this video:
Today we are continuing our trip around the Taranaki region of New Zealand by checking out the town of Stratford. Stratford is famous for being the Shakespeare town of New Zealand thanks to street names after various characters from Shakespeare, as well as the Stratford Glockenspiel that does a performance four times a day.
First thing we do when we arrive in Stratford in Taranaki is check out the famous Stratford Glockenspiel for ourselves. It does a performance of Romeo and Juliet every day at 10m, 1pm, 3pm and 7pm. You can find the Stratford Glockenspiel right in the centre of Stratford.
After that, we look around a few shops and art galleries then settle in cafe in Stratford called Cafe x.o.x which is super quirky and a great way to stay out of the rain.
Finally, we check in at the Stratford Holiday Park before making our way to some walks around the Patea River including a swing bridge.
So what do you think of Stratford in Taranaki? Let us know in the comments below!

NEW ZEALAND 🇳🇿 BEST KEPT SECRET! Mt Taranaki & Forgotten World Highway | 197 Countries, 3 Kids
Join us for part 2 of our tour of New Plymouth and the Republic of Whangamomona, New Zealand!
We loved the view of Mount Taranaki from our Home Exchange, but imagine living next to an active volcano. These are some brave people!
Our first stop was a little agricultural town nearby called Stratford. Back in the day, it was a practice to name newly established towns after the birthplaces of imminent British figures, so Stratford was named after William Shakespeare's hometown.
To pay even further respect to the genius British playwright, they named 67 streets after the characters from 27 of Shakespeare’s plays!
Today, Stratford is home to the only glockenspiel clock tower in New Zealand. It plays the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet four times a day and we were lucky enough to be there at the right time to see the 5-minute show.
Leaving town, we decided to check out the Carrington Walkway. This 2-mile long loop trail around Stratford was a great way to stretch our legs and discover the surrounding area.
Next, we drove up to the Stratford Mountain House for a picnic with the best view of Mount Taranaki.
From there we continued on our tour to Hawera, the second-biggest town in the Taranaki region. We quickly noticed the Hawera Water Tower - built because they had three devastating fires.
After a quick visit, we decided to jump on the Surf Highway 45 towards New Plymouth and check out some of the nearby beaches and popular surfing spots.
The next day, we visited the Puke Ariki (Hill of Chiefs) Museum in New Plymouth which also doubles as a library.
Puke Ariki is an interactive museum, free to see and open to 5 pm. We enjoyed diving into New Zealand’s history, nature, geology, inventions, social development, and a whole lot more.
While still in the Taranaki area, we couldn’t miss visiting the Republic of Whangamomona. Yes, you read that right! Even though now it’s a tourist place, Whangamomona was founded in 1989. They celebrate the day of the republic on November 1st and even have their own passport stamp!
But to get there, we first had to go through the infamous road known as the Forgotten World Highway! The name comes from the fact that there are no gas stations, settlements, or phone signals throughout the 150 km stretch!
New Plymouth was such an adventure!
