This rail link is also expected to provide northeast India with an opportunity to enter the international market.The distance between Haldibari railway station and the international border is 4.5 kms, while the distance from Chilhati is about 7.5 kms.The first goods train left Dumdim station of Alipurduar division on Sunday and will reach Chilahati station in Bangladesh via the Haldibari-Chilahati rail route.History of Haldibari-Chilahati rail route
After independence, only seven rail routes were operational between India and Bangladesh (known as east Pakistan then). Both nations now aim to revive those old rail links.
As of now, five links connecting West Bengal with Bangladesh have been made operational, which include Petrapole (India) - Benapole (Bangladesh), Gede (India) - Darshan (Bangladesh), Singhabad (India) - Rohanpur (Bangladesh), Radhikapur (India) - Birol. (Bangladesh) and Haldibari-Chilahati.
The Haldibari-Chilahati rail link was last operational till 1965. It was part of the broad-gauge main road from Kolkata to Siliguri during the partition. Even after partition, trains traveling to Assam and North Bengal continued to travel through the former East Pakistan region. However, the 1965 war effectively cut off all railway links between India and Bangaldesh.
Construction of the rail line from Haldibari station to the Bangladesh border began in 2016 and ended in 2017. Indian Railways restored the tracks at a cost of Rs 82 crore.
The Haldibari-Chilahati rail route is expected to improve trade, social and economic ties between India and Bangladesh, and also benefit other South Asian countries such as Nepal and Bhutan

A religious meeting (Ekramia Isale Sawab) on the death anniversary of Hazrat Sham Sheikh Ekramuddin Haque, a Muslim saint popularly known as Huzur Sahib is organized at Haldibari in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal (India) every year. The seven-day fair, organised by the Mela Organising Committee, attracts devotees from different districts of north Bengal, Northeastern states, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. Devotees from all faiths - Hindus, Christians and Buddhists - join the Muslims to pray at the mazaar (shrine) of Hujur Sahib. Every year people assembled from different parts of the country at the fair that is the pride of Haldibari. It is a symbol of communal harmony. Camel sellers can also be seen at the fair, which is a centre for animal trading. The mela draws huge crowds of Bangladeshis from districts like Bogura, Dinajpur, Rangpur and Maimensingh.

For business enquiry - rajan.railmusafir@gmail.com दार्जिलिंग मेल भारत के पूर्वी क्षेत्र की उन पौराणिक गाड़ियों में से एक है जो स्वतंत्रता-पूर्व दिनों से चली आ रही है और अभी भी चालू है। यह सिलीगुड़ी के न्यू जलपाईगुड़ी में दार्जिलिंग हिमालयन रेलवे से जुड़ता है। यह कोलकाता-सिलीगुड़ी मार्ग और हल्दीबाड़ी स्लिप मार्ग के लिए एक प्रमुख ट्रेन है।
ब्रिटिश काल के दौरान उत्तर बंगाल के सभी कनेक्शन पूर्वी बंगाल के माध्यम से थे।
1878 से, कोलकाता से रेल मार्ग, जिसे तब कलकत्ता कहा जाता था, सिलीगुड़ी में दो गोद में था। पहली गोद में कलकत्ता स्टेशन (बाद में नाम बदलकर सियालदह) से पूर्वी बंगाल स्टेट रेलवे के साथ पद्मा नदी के दक्षिणी तट पर दमूक्खा घाट तक 185 किमी की यात्रा थी। तब यात्री नदी के उस पार एक नौका का लाभ उठा सकते थे। यात्रा की दूसरी गोद उत्तर बंगाल रेलवे की 336 किलोमीटर की मीटर गेज लाइन थी जिसने सराघाट को पद्मा के उत्तरी तट पर सिलीगुड़ी से जोड़ा था। [२]
बाद में १ ९ १२ में पद्मा के पार १. Later किमी लंबे हार्डिंग ब्रिज का निर्माण हुआ। [३] 1926 में पुल के उत्तर में मीटर-गेज सेक्शन को ब्रॉड गेज में बदल दिया गया, और इसलिए पूरा कलकत्ता - सिलीगुड़ी मार्ग ब्रॉड-गेज हो गया। [२] मार्ग इस प्रकार लगभग चला गया: सियालदह-रानाघाट-भेरमारा-हार्डिंग ब्रिज-इस्वर्दी-संथार-हिलि-परबतीपुर-निलफामारी-हल्दीबारी-जलपाईगुड़ी-सिलीगुड़ी
विभाजन के दिनों में दार्जिलिंग मेल इसी मार्ग पर चलती थी। भारत के विभाजन के बाद भी यह कुछ वर्षों तक इस मार्ग पर चला।
Darjeeling Mail is one of the legendary trains in the eastern region of India that has been running from pre-independence days and is still in operation. It connects to the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway at New Jalpaiguri in Siliguri. This is a major train for Kolkata-Siliguri route and Haldibari slip route.
During the British period all connections to North Bengal were through East Bengal.
From 1878, the railway route from Kolkata, then called Calcutta, to Siliguri was in two laps. The first lap was a 185 km journey along the Eastern Bengal State Railway from Calcutta Station (later renamed Sealdah) to Damookdeah Ghat on the southern bank of the Padma River. The passengers would then avail a ferry across the river. The second lap of the journey was a 336 km metre gauge line of the North Bengal Railway that linked Saraghat on the northern bank of the Padma to Siliguri.[2]
Later the 1.8 km long Hardinge Bridge across the Padma came up in 1912.[3] In 1926 the metre-gauge section north of the bridge was converted to broad gauge, and so the entire Calcutta - Siliguri route became broad-gauge.[2] The route thus roughly ran: Sealdah-Ranaghat-Bheramara-Hardinge Bridge-Iswardi-Santahar-Hili-Parabtipur-Nilphamari-Haldibari-Jalpaiguri-Siliguri.
The Darjeeling Mail ran on this route in pre-partition days. Even after the partition of India it ran on this route for some years.[4][5]
