Tang'an and Xiage Villages - A Hike Deep Into Rural China
In this vlog, we're hiking from Zhaoxing Dong Village to Tang'an Village (堂安侗寨), also making a brief stop at Xiage Village (夏格村). These villages in Qiandongnan, Guizhou are deep into rural China, so we are hiking for two hours on a mountain road to get there. There are beautiful views along the hike, particularly of rice terraces. And through this vlog, we learn a little about the Dong people's culture in this area. What an eye-opening experience!

The Old City of Shanghai (Chinese: 上海老城厢; pinyin: Shànghăi Lăo Chéngxiāng; Shanghainese: Zånhae Loh Senshian), also formerly known as the Chinese city, is the traditional urban core of Shanghai. Its boundary was formerly defined by a defensive wall. The Old City was the county seat for the old county of Shanghai.
With the advent of foreign concessions in Shanghai, the Old City became just one part of Shanghai’s urban core but continued for decades to be the seat of the Chinese authority in Shanghai.
Notable features include the City God Temple which is located in the center of the Old City and is connected to the Yuyuan Garden. The Old City was for decades essentially coterminous with the old Nanshi District, which is now part of Huangpu District.

Yu Garden or Yuyuan Garden (simplified Chinese: 豫园; traditional Chinese: 豫園; pinyin: Yù Yuán, Shanghainese “Yuyu” lit. Garden of Happiness) is an extensive Chinese garden located beside the City God Temple in the northeast of the Old City of Shanghai at Huangpu Qu, Shanghai Shi. It abuts the Yuyuan Tourist Mart, the Huxinting Teahouse and the Yu Garden Bazaar.
This garden is accessible from the Shanghai Metro’s Line 10 Yuyuan Garden Station.
Yu Garden was first built in 1559 during the Ming Dynasty by Pan Yunduan as a comfort for his father, the minister Pan En, in his old age. Pan Yunduan began the project after failing one of the imperial exams, but his appointment as governor of Sichuan postponed construction for nearly twenty years until 1577. The garden was the largest and most prestigious of its era in Shanghai, but eventually its expense helped ruin the Pans.

The City God Temple or Temple of the City Gods (simplified Chinese: 上海城隍庙; traditional Chinese: 上海城隍廟; pinyin: Shànghǎi Chénghuángmiào; Shanghainese: Zånhae Senwonmioh), officially the City Temple of Shanghai, is a folk temple located in the old city of Shanghai. It commemorates the elevation of Shanghai to municipal status and is the site of the veneration of three Chinese figures honored as the city gods of the town. It is also known by some locals as the Old City God Temple, in reference to a later New City God Temple which no longer exists.
Regardless of size, many walled cities in ancient China contained a temple dedicated to one or more immortal or god as the spirit(s) or protector(s) of the city. The City God Temple in Shanghai originated as the Jinshan God Temple, dedicated to the spirit of Jinshan, or “Gold Mountain”, an island off the coast of Shanghai. It was converted into a City God Temple in 1403, during the Yongle Emperor era.
Residents of the old city as well as nearby areas visited the temple to pray for good fortune and peace. The temple reached its largest extent in the Daoguang era. The popularity of the temple also led to many businesses being set up in the area, turning the surrounding streets into a busy marketplace.

This is a Chinese temple that I came across accidentally when I was at Raffles Place last year. I was pleasantly surprised to find a traditional temple like this in the heart of the Central Business District, just a few minutes walk from the subway station at Raffles Place. I do not think many people know about this temple because it was located away from the main road. Really like the colorful & intricate carvings that can be seen within the temple. Do take note the temple closes at 5pm if you are interested to visit. Entrance is free.
