8 Worst Towns to Live in Northern Ireland
Let us put it in the right context before we take it so far. The expression “worst towns” here is going to be subjective and relative. This is because Northern Ireland is a generally good place to live. Regardless of how good a region is, however, some parts of it will be better than others. On the other hand, those parts of the region that are not regarded as the best are in that context not so good. And if all of the parts of a region are just good, the “least good” among them is invariably the worst. It is in that sense that we now want to show you the 8 worst towns to live in Northern Ireland.
8. Ballymena
Let’s begin with Ballymena, a large town in County Antrim. The town with a population of more than 29,000 is the 8th-largest town in the region by population. But it’s also one of the worst towns to live in Northern Ireland. Gone are those days when the town was prosperous and when a lot of factories were providing job opportunities.
The town has now suffered from a gripping recession that not only deterred investment in manufacturing but also stressed out existing shopping centers. Though some attempts have been made to rejuvenate the town economically, the unemployment rate is still very high. The shopping centers are no longer bustling as they used to be due to badly reduced purchasing power and low demands in the town. Besides, there are several rough areas such as Harryville in the town. Generally, the town that hosts 7 towers lacks prosperity, though it’s one of the safest places to live for people with legitimate business dealings.
7. Lurgan
Lurgan is another large town on this list. It is in County Armagh near the southern shore of Lough Neagh. The town is located about 18 miles southwest of Belfast having been linked together by the M1 motorway. Additionally, the Belfast-Dublin railway line serves this town with a population of 28,634 within the Armagh, Banbridge, and Craigavon districts.
Even then, it is one of the worst towns. It is divided along the religious line, no thanks to the housing anomaly. This is especially apparent in its worst part. Many of the people born in the town would prefer not to live there if they are not landlords. Houses there are usually up for buying to own not to rent. That is why it’s not a good place to live in Northern Ireland for foreigners. You will get rental areas only on Ardboe Drive and Trasna Way. But in Pollock Drive and Grey Estate, you’re in for a completely different experience.
6. Strabane
We’re now in County Tyrone to find the town named Strabane. Lying on the east bank of the Foyle River, it had a population of 13,172. It is located roughly midway from Omagh, Derry, and Letterkenny. Strabane is also on this list of the 8 worst towns to live in Northern Ireland.
Strabane has remained stuck to that unpopular tag not only in NI but also in the UK as a whole. For instance, out of 317 local authority areas in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, it is the 8th worst to live, according to the research carried out by Channel 4. The research measured 5 criteria homebuyers always consider namely crime, education, employment, environment, and lifestyle. The town performed woefully in all of them. It has been ranking badly for livability for years on end.

U.S. Route 11 (US 11) is a key north-south highway stretching 1,645 miles from New Orleans, Louisiana, to the Canadian border at Rouses Point, New York. Established in 1926, the route retains much of its original path, passing through ten states and offering a scenic alternative to the faster interstates. It runs southwest to northeast, often paralleling I-81.
Louisiana: US 11 begins in the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge in New Orleans, crossing Lake Pontchartrain on the Maestri Bridge, built in 1928. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the bridge was the only eastern route into New Orleans. US 11 then parallels I-10 and I-59 before entering Mississippi.
Mississippi: In Mississippi, US 11 runs alongside I-59 through towns like Picayune, Poplarville, Hattiesburg, and Laurel. It serves as a vital regional route, providing access to local businesses, scenic areas, and historical sites. In Hattiesburg, US 11 passes the University of Southern Mississippi, and in Laurel, it moves through a historic downtown before crossing into Alabama at Meridian.
Alabama: US 11 parallels I-59 through Alabama, passing through Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Gadsden, and Fort Payne. In Tuscaloosa, the highway runs near the University of Alabama and in Birmingham, it passes through historic neighborhoods, offering a glimpse of the state's industrial past. The route crosses into Georgia after Fort Payne.
Georgia: The highway briefly enters Georgia, skirting the northwest corner near Lookout Mountain, with views of the Appalachian foothills before continuing into Tennessee.
Tennessee: In Tennessee, US 11 travels through Chattanooga, following I-75 to Knoxville, where it splits into US 11E and US 11W. US 11E runs northeast through Greeneville, Johnson City, and Bristol, while US 11W passes through Kingsport, meeting US 11E near the Virginia state line.
Virginia: In Virginia, US 11 runs through the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah Valley, connecting towns like Abingdon, Wytheville, Roanoke, and Harrisonburg. The highway follows the Great Wagon Road, an important colonial route, and runs parallel to I-81 through scenic landscapes, historic towns, and Civil War sites.
West Virginia: Entering West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle, US 11 travels through Ridgeway, Bunker Hill, Inwood, and Martinsburg. It runs parallel to I-81 and serves as a main road for these communities, offering a quieter alternative to the interstate.
Maryland: US 11 covers a short 12.83-mile stretch in Maryland, connecting Williamsport, Hagerstown, and Maugansville. It runs parallel to I-81, serving local communities and providing access to historical sites like the C&O Canal National Historical Park in Williamsport.
Pennsylvania: In Pennsylvania, US 11 enters near Greencastle, following I-81 through Chambersburg and Shippensburg. North of Carlisle, the highway passes the Miracle Mile, known for its traveler services. In Harrisburg, US 11 merges with US 15 and parallels the Susquehanna River, continuing through Danville, Bloomsburg, Wilkes-Barre, and Scranton before reaching New York.
New York: In New York, US 11 follows the Susquehanna River’s eastern edge from the Pennsylvania border to Binghamton, then continues through Cortland, Syracuse, Watertown, and Canton. The highway skirts the edge of the Adirondack Park, moving through rural landscapes before ending at the Canadian border in Rouses Point.
US 11 offers a unique travel experience, showcasing the history, culture, and natural beauty of the eastern United States. Unlike interstates, US 11 takes travelers directly through small towns and communities, preserving its original character while providing a scenic, slower-paced alternative to faster highways.

This area of Indiana has had a reputation of being redneck for many years. In this video I drive around the most redneck pair of towns that reside in the state of Indiana, and I tell you more about them along the way. Greencastle 2022
Greencastle Indiana has the distinction of being one of the only places in the country with a Nazi war trophy in its town square. This war machine is a German built V-1, commonly known as a Buzz Bomb. Adolf Hitler unleashed the V-1, precursor of the cruise missile, against London in 1944.
It was a new German weapon, literally a flying bomb. Officially it was simply FZG-76. The pilotless anti-aircraft designation was a ruse to throw allied spies off track. In Britain, it was known as the doodlebug. This is one of two Buzz Bombs in the United States. The other is in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. It is intended as a memorial to those who lost their lives in World War II from Putnam county.
Also in the Video is the East College building of DePauw university. DePauw University was founded in 1837, by the Methodist Church. It was originally named Indiana Asbury University by Francis Asbury. Greencastle, Indiana, was the chosen site because the community worked diligently to raise $25,000 - a huge sum in those days - to convince the Methodists to establish their college in the rough, frontier village. In January of 1837, the General Assembly of the State of Indiana granted a charter for the establishment of the university, and the cornerstone of the first building was laid that year. Three years later the first president of the university, Matthew Simpson, a friend and counselor of Abraham Lincoln, was inaugurated and the first class graduated. Over several decades, the curriculum developed from a traditional, classical one to a set of courses that included history, composition, and the natural sciences. Indiana Asbury University grew quickly, although many men left the university to fight for either North or South during the Civil War. In 1867, the college admitted a small group of women. This was with strong support of the faculty and Board of Trustees. In 1871, the construction of East College began. It took 13 years to build, but East College still remains the centerpiece of the campus. Washington C. DePauw and his family generously gave more than $600,000 to the university during the economic hardships of the 1870s, and out of gratitude the trustees authorized the change in name to DePauw University. W.C. DePauw and his family took a special interest in the formation and progress of the School of Music, which was founded in 1884, and is one of the oldest in the country. DePauw University has a distinguished faculty and an academically talented student body. Although the university has undergone many changes over the last 150 years, the sense of its history is still obvious on the campus and in its traditions.

MOVILLE TOWN County Donegal in IRELAND

Moville (moh-VIL; Irish: Bun an Phobail) is a coastal town located on the Inishowen Peninsula of County Donegal, Ireland, close to the northern tip of the island of Ireland. It is the first coastal town of the Wild Atlantic Way when starting on the northern end.
LOCATION
The town is located on the western shore of Lough Foyle, approximately 30 kilometres (20 mi) from Derry, which lies across the border in Northern Ireland. Features include Moville Green, a pier, a large seaside park in the Victorian style which features bandstands, walking trails, playgrounds, a coastal footpath and views east across the waters of the lough to Northern Ireland. Moville is close to several beaches, and receives visitors and daytrippers in the summer months.
HISTORY
In the second half of the 19th century, Moville was a point of embarkation for travellers, especially emigrants, to Canada and the United States of America. In the late 19th century, steamships of the Glasgow-based Anchor Line and Allan Line made port at Moville while en route to and from New York, while just after the turn of the 20th century, the Canadian Pacific Line also established a terminal at the port as part of their service connecting Liverpool and Montreal for Canadian-bound Irish immigrants. Today, the town receives little maritime traffic but retains a small fishing harbour. The commercial fishing port at Greencastle lies a few miles away.
The ancestors of Field-Marshal Bernard Montgomery, the Montgomerys of New Park, were a landed family of the town. When flying over the town in 1947 he commented: It looks just the same. My dear old Irish home His grandfather Robert Montgomery had built Montgomery Terrace in 1884.
