Check out more of our European adventures:
The Netherlands is a popular vacation spot for families. But Amsterdam isn't exactly synonymous with family fun. So in this episode of @windowseatworldtravel we're getting on the train and exploring rural Holland. A touristic walk in Grave (Netherlands, on Meuse)
Grave received city rights in 1233. The former municipality of Grave was formed in the Napoleonic era (1810) and coincided with the fortified Grave and immediate surroundings. The history of the town was thus linked to that of the place.
This changed in 1942. Then there was a reclassification place where the municipality Grave was expanded with the previously independent municipalities Velp and Escharen. Moreover, in 1994 the neighboring municipality of Beers was abolished and a part thereof, the parish Gassel, was also added to the municipality Grave. Near to Grave lies a bridge, now called John S. Thompsonbrug, built in 1929. It is the northern connection to Gelderland, spanning the river Maas. The bridge was one of the key strategic points in Operation Market Garden; the city was liberated at 17 September 1944, but suffered very little damage. The bridge was named in 2004 after Lieutenant John S. Thompson who commanded the platoon of the 82nd Airborne Division that captured the bridge.
The Hampoort is the old entrance to the city, and it is still largely intact and can be visited.

INSIDE ANNE FRANK HOUSE: Tour, History, How To Get Tickets! (4K)
The Anne Frank House (Museum) in Amsterdam is one of the most famous houses in the world and the Anne Frank Diary is one of the most famous diaries in the world. After the Nazis occupied The Netherlands during WWII, Anne Frank's father, Otto Frank, decided to hide the family and a few select friends in a Secret Annex above where he worked in 1942. He was afraid that the Nazis would send his family to concentration camps, where they would be killed, simply because they were Jewish. They were able to hide for two years before being discovered by the police. They were all sent to Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps, where Anne, her sister Margot, and mother Edith died. Only Otto survived. When Otto returned to Amsterdam, he discovered Anne's diary, which she started writing when she was 13 years-old. It became so popular, it was translated into 70 languages and a movie was made about it. People around the world related to the writings of a young Jewish girl who talked about what it was like to grow up as a teenager in difficult times. She appreciated the small things in life, but she also grew up living in fear during the Holocaust. Her diary contains life lessons for everyone.
Getting tickets to the Anne Frank House isn't easy. They are released six weeks in advance every Tuesday at 10am Amsterdam time, and I explain at the beginning of the video the best way to get tickets, which are only sold online by the Anne Frank House Museum.

Looking for things to do in Amsterdam? In this 4K video, I highlight the top 15 best attractions, activities, and neighborhoods! I also share some insider tips on what to avoid. My goal is for this video to be your go-to resource so you have a fantastic time while visiting Amsterdam.
The best things to do in Amsterdam is to explore the various neighborhoods. The Jordaan district, for example, is a quiet and quaint neighborhood with some great shops and restaurants. It's also one of the best places to find some unique Dutch shopping. A street art tour in NSDM and STRAAT Museum will take you through some of the hidden gems off the beaten path.
The Anne Frank House is given high priority on many people's Amsterdam to-do list. The line can be incredibly long, so you might want to consider buying your tickets online if you think you might visit. I also recommend getting the audio guide for this museum as it gives you a more in-depth look into the lives of these people and their harrowing escape.

10 INTERESTING GRAVES in Derry City Cemetery!
Have you ever taken a tour of Derry's famous graveyard? 🪦
Derry City Cemetery is a cemetery based in the Creggan area of Derry, Northern Ireland. By 1867 the graveyards at St Columb's Cathedral, St. Augustine’s Church, and Long Tower Chapel had all stopped accepting ‘new’ burials leading to this cemetery becoming the main burial ground for the city's Protestant and Catholic population.
It is the final resting place for over 70,000 people and includes graves of victims of the cholera pandemics of the late 1800s, some of those who fought in WWII and, most famously, victims and casualties of the Troubles.

A Tour of The Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten (NL) 2024 in 4K / UHD
The Netherlands Amercian Cemetery and the new American Cemetery’s visitor center (museum) in Margraten.
Margraten, the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial, is the only American military cemetery in the Netherlands. The U.S. 30th Infantry Division liberated this site on 13 September 1944 and 8301 American military rest here. The cemetery site has a rich historical background, lying near the famous Cologne-Boulogne highway built by the Romans and used by Caesar during his campaign in that area. The highway was also used by Charlemagne, Charles V, Napoleon, and Kaiser Wilhelm II. In May 1940 Hitler's legions advanced over the route of the old Roman highway, overwhelming the Low Countries. In September 1944, German troops once more used the highway for their withdrawal from the countries they occupied for four years.
The cemetery's tall memorial tower can be seen before reaching the site, which covers 65.5 acres. From the cemetery entrance visitors are led to the ‘Court of Honor’ with its pool reflecting the tower. At the base of the tower facing the reflecting pool is a statue representing a mother grieving her lost son. To the right and left respectively are the visitor building and the map room containing three large, engraved operations maps with texts depicting the military operations of the American armed forces. Stretching along the sides of the court are the ‘Tablets of the Missing’ on which are recorded 1722 names. Rosettes mark the names of those since recovered and identified.
Within the tower is a chapel. The light fixture in the chapel and the altar candelabra and flower bowl were presented by the government of the Netherlands and by the local provincial administration. Beyond the tower is a burial area divided into 16 plots, where 8301 American military dead rest, their headstones set in long curves. A wide, tree-lined mall leads to the flagstaff that crowns the crest.
Adopting Graves Margraten
At the cemetery in Margraten many of the graves have flowers, placed by people who have adopted one or more graves and thus want to show their gratitude to the fallen liberators and their next of kin. The original idea to adopt graves of the American liberators came about in February of 1945. To this effect the “Burger Comité Margraten” (Citizens Committee Margraten) was formed. The committee’s goal was to support the set-up of the American Cemetery with an extensive adoption campaign.
The adopters were supposed to regularly visit the adopted grave and, in case this was appreciated, keep in touch with the next of kin in the U.S. The campaign gained massive support. At the first Memorial Day in 1945 every grave was decorated with flowers. At the second Memorial Day one year later all graves (at the time an incredible amount of 18,764) had been adopted. Captain Shomon, the founder of the American Cemetery, praised the members of the committee for all the work they had done. Since 2015 all graves as well as all of the names in the Walls of the Missing are adopted and there even is a waiting list.
Faces of Margraten
A total of 8,301 American soldiers are buried under these crosses and Stars of David. Another 1,722 names are listed on the Walls of the Missing, only a few of this group of missing were later found. We know their names, but who were they? Where did they come from and what did they do before the war? Who was the person behind the name? With the project Faces of Margraten the Fields of Honor Foundation seeks to put a face to as many of these soldiers as possible by placing a photograph near their graves and their names on the Walls of the Missing. Each grave represents a story of a soldier, resistance fighter or civilian casualty. By passing on stories we keep memories alive. Sometimes painful, sometimes beautiful. Stories about loss through war are stories that should never be lost. Because with these stories we can pass on peace.

0486TV | A unique historic town in Europe, experience Historic Grave - The Movie
In the prosperous Europe of the 17th century, the Netherlands flourished as never before. Though, it also was a period of war, destruction, looting and sieges. Various battles were fought in the strategically located town of Grave aan de Maas. Traces of that period are still to find in the historical center of town, which over the centuries was part of the Zuiderwaterlinie. The history has formed Grave into a true attraction and pleasant city to visit. An attractive town where cordiality and a Burgundian life come together and where there is room for foreigners, travelers and traders. The inhabitants are particularly proud of its historical core of existence, its deep-rooted past. It has shaped Grave and this you will find back in the unique mentality.
Unique in the country of Cuijk, unique in the province of North Brabant and unique in Europe. Be our guest, visit and linger in Grave. Become one with the centuries-old history and mindset. Experience the ultimate Burgundian life, experience historic Grave.
Visiting Grave - Overloon & Radio Kootwijk
In the easter weekend, I explored the north-east of the river Maas in the Netherlands.
I visited the most sieged city of the Netherlands - Grave. On route I stopped at the Cleve Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, I also visited the war museum in Overloon, which I heard so many positive thing of. On my way back home to Friesland (Frysia), I stopped at a historical site Radio Kootwijk in the middle of the national park Veluwe near the city of Apeldoorn. An amazing art-deco building, built in de 1920's, so the we Dutch could stay in contact with the now former colony of Indonesie (Java).

The Netherlands from above - E2/10 - The hungry jaws of Europe
This series shows The Netherlands from a spectacular perspective. Through data visualizations, impressive aerial images and portraits of people on the ground, we show who we are and how time changes and has changed the country.
The Netherlands was once almost all swamp, a place where water ruled. Now it's a place where hundreds of ships come to each day, full of oil, cars and containers.
