Gostivar is a city in North Macedonia, located in the upper Polog valley region. Gostivar has road and railway connections with the other cities in the region, such as Tetovo, Skopje, Kičevo, Ohrid, and Debar. A freeway was built in 1995, from Gostivar to Tetovo, 24 km long. Gostivar is the seat of Gostivar Municipality.

North Macedonia, officially Republic of North Macedonia (Macedonian: Република Северна Македонија, Republika Severna Makedonija, Albanian: Republika e Maqedonisë së Veriut), is a landlocked country in the Balkans. It is bordered by Serbia and Kosovo to the north, Albania to the west, Bulgaria to the east, and Greece to the south.

Today we went on a huge Balkan food tour in Skopje, North Macedonia, tasting some of the most popular food in Macedonia and best food in the Balkans, this is one big Skopje food tour!
We started our huge Balkan food tour tasting the incredibly delicious, flavourful and tasty Macedonian burek at a local bakery in Skopje. Burek is one breakfast food to eat in Skopje that you don't want to miss. We continued our North Macedonian food tour tasting Macedonian cevapi. Cevapi, or Kebapi in Macedonian, is such a popular North Macedonian food, as well as one of the most popular Balkan foods that we had to try.
Our Balkan food tour took us to eat a famous Skopje street food at a very local shop, stay tuned to see which one! We finished off our food tour in North Macedonia to try pljeskavica and rakija, two of the most must try foods and drinks in the Balkans and Macedonia. The pljeskavica was on another level, and the rakija dangerously delicious.

Near to Gostivar is the village of Vrutok, where the Vardar river begins at an altitude of 683 meters from the base of the Šar Planina mountain. Vardar extends through Gostivar, cutting it in half, passes through the capital Skopje, goes through the country, enters Greece and finally reaches the Aegean Sea.
The most significant monuments in the city is the Clock Tower (Saat-Kula) and the St. Bogorodica church.
It's first mentioning is in 1313 as a settlement of 200 residents.
Origin of the name 'Gostivar':
In the Suva Gora-region (meaning dry mountain), there were churches and monasteries. Almost all the monasteries had farms in the Gostivar field. The settlement of what will be the town of Gostivar was an important centre of the monasteries (‚metuf' - meaning Monastery land). The people from the metufs of the Suva Gora monasteries went to Gostivar to feast. They ate good food and led a dissipated life there for several days. The name of the town of Gostivar derived from those feasts (‚goshtevanja').
During Second World War, Gostivar like the rest of the Western part of Macedonia were under Italian and Albanian fascistic occupation, the ethnic Macedonian population was terrorized by Albanian bandits (Balisti), their pro-Italian fascistic organization was called Bali Kombetar. When the Macedonian liberation movement begun the organized Macedonian fighters clashed with the Balisti, under the deads was the Balisti-leader 'Djemo'. The most important ethnic Macedonian fighter in this region was the national hero Cedo Filipovski-Dame (a statue is to find at the town's square)
In 1997 Clashes between Albanian extremists and the Macedonian Police because of the illegal positioning of the Albanian State Flag in front of the municipal building.
Gostivar today is a modern city, it has good road and railway connections with the other cities in the region: Tetovo, Skopje, Kičevo, Ohrid, and Debar. A new and modern freeway was built, in 1995, from Gostivar to Tetovo, 24 km long. The city of Gostivar is the seat of the Gostivar municipality.

Shop signs were no longer in the Cyrillic alphabet used in Macedonia.
There is a stone bridge over a river that flows through the heart of TETOVO, and as soon as you drive in, you’ll see Tetovo’s biggest attraction,
The painted Mosque. I’ve seen nothing like it before, and you will realise how special it is.
I was welcomed inside to see its equally beautiful interior. It is meticulously decorated with vibrant artwork and chandelier lights.
This was the first time I’d ever been into a mosque; I’m not religious; however, I appreciate architecture and arts.
