🛳️ Explore Gladstone Queensland ~ Things to do in and around Gladstone

Gladstone is 518 kilometres north of Brisbane and is predominantly an industrial town; however, as well as its bustling port, it has incredible parks and gardens and a fascinating maritime history.

02:12 The Little Sea Hill Lighthouse
02:25 HMAS Gladstone II
03:25 Gladstone Maritime Museum
04:05 Tondoon Botanic Gardens
05:16 Spinnaker Park

The Port of Gladstone is one of the largest bulk commodity ports in the world, handling over 30 different products and more than 83 million tonnes of cargo annually.

On our recent visit to Gladstone, we started the day wandering through the East Shores Parklands, then explored the HMAS Gladstone II and the Maritime Museum. We then visited the Tondoon Botanic Gardens and Spinnaker Park.

Gladstone ~ Queensland
The East Shores Parklands is a world-class recreational precinct with a water play park, meandering boardwalks, playgrounds, a café, a stunning waterfall, several picnic and barbecue areas and plenty of green space.

The Little Sea Hill Lighthouse was initially erected at Sea Hill Point on Curtis Island in the 1800s and has a unique hexagonal base.

The HMAS Gladstone II is a 42-metre ex-Australian Navy Fremantle Class Patrol Boat berthed in the East Shores Precinct and now a museum boat. Guided tours are available on the weekends from 10.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.

The Gladstone Maritime Museum houses a collection of boats, navigational aids, shipwreck relics and detailed model ships.

The Tondoon Botanic Gardens is on Glenlyon Road, six kilometres from the town centre. There are 83 hectares of lovely gardens surrounding Lake Tondoon. This lake provided Gladstone’s water supply until 1945; now, it is a habitat for various birds.

There are beautiful wood carvings, an observation tower, playgrounds, picnic and BBQ areas and a lovely, tranquil Japanese tea garden.

Spinnaker Park is four kilometres from the Gladstone town centre and is nestled between the Marina and the Harbour. Open every day from 5.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m.; this parkland is a great spot to watch the boats, swim, or explore the two and a half kilometres of walking tracks.

We wandered along the Discovery trail, a fun, educational one-kilometre walking track with six information boards, where we learned interesting facts about Gladstone’s key marine animals.

Gladstone is a beautiful place in Australia

Gladstone Queensland - 4K Ambient Walk

Gladstone is a coastal Central Queensland city of around 35,000 people and is where I took this 4K walking tour in late 2020.
The city centre has a number of heritage listed buildings, but being during the summer holidays, the city itself was very quiet. All the action was in the park lands down by the water. So after a stroll down Goondoon Street, that is where I found myself. Not until I had climbed the steps to get a view over the harbour.
Gladstone is a a medium sized city and flat enough for a decent 4K walking tour.

Gladstone, Queensland

Centre of the Southern Reef - The Gladstone Region is a unique area of Queensland - a region where opportunity awaits. This dynamic city basks in a sub-tropical climate with islands, waterways and beaches on the doorstep of the Great Barrier Reef. So many landscapes, variety and so much sunshine provide the visitor with endless opportunities.

At the heart of the region, the city of Gladstone overlooks its natural deep water harbour. To the south lie the shires of Calliope and Miriam Vale with idyllic, secluded beaches and scenic National Parks. 1770 is the first place in Queensland that Captain James Cook stepped ashore. Boyne Island is renowned for its beautiful foreshore parks, while its sister city of Tannum Sands offers long sandy beaches for safe coastal recreation.

The reef islands within the Gladstone Region are true coral cays, and day trips are on offer to Lady Musgrave Island and Fitzroy Lagoon where visitors can enjoy diving, snorkelling, fishing, reef walking or exploring the flora and fauna

The region has several impressive National Parks which add camping and 4 wheel driving to the adventures you can experience in the area. The spectacular cliffs of the Kroombit Tops are cloaked in diverse flora and fauna. Mount Castletower National Park lies at the base of Lake Awoonga with its impressive, yet rugged terrain. Deepwater and Eurimbula National Parks provide the contrast of open eucalypt and paperback forests with lush rainforests and quiet beaches.

Gladstone's Tondoon Botanic Gardens are one of Australia's few totally native botanic gardens. The display areas specialise in the plants of the surrounding and Tropical North Queensland regions. The Gladstone Entertainment Centre, forms the focal point of the city's cultural activities. The Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and Museum is a colonial Georgian structure which houses three exhibition areas.
