Wij zijn Pieter en Marieke en sinds 2015 varen we met onze boot de Canicula door Nederland. Tijdens onze eerste vaartocht door Overijssel vallen we van de ene verbazing in de andere. Over de imposante bebouwing van Vollenhove, de massieve zeesluis van Blokzijl, het dijkdorp Kuinre. Geweldig! Inmiddels zijn we bijna heel Nederland door gevaren. Om iedereen te laten zien hoe mooi Nederland is vanaf het water, maken we video's van onze vaartochten en schrijven we artikelen over wat we allemaal tegenkomen onderweg. De Canicula is een St. Tropez cabincruiser van negen meter lang, tachtig centimeter diep en ruim twee meter hoog.

Hardinxveld-Giessendam, The Netherlands
Hardinxveld-Giessendam is a municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. It is located about 10 km east of Dordrecht, on the river Beneden-Merwede. The municipality had a population of 18,413 in 2021 and covers an area of 19.35 km2 (7.47 sq mi) of which 2.44 km2 (0.94 sq mi) is water.

The municipality of Hardinxveld-Giessendam consists of the two population centres Giessendam/Neder-Hardinxveld and Boven-Hardinxveld. Until they were merged in 1957, Giessendam and Hardinxveld were two municipalities, consisting of only a few streets and dykes and only a few thousand inhabitants.
The town's economy is for a large part dependent on ship building (e.g. Damen Shipyards Group) and general contracting. Several industry parks are present.

Winter fun in Northern Netherlands
We're out for a fair this weekend (my mom has a store, she sells art stamps) in Assen, Drenthe, The Netherlands. It started snowing the day we arrived, about 10 cm or so (4 in) fell, and then temperatures plummeted. It's been -15C overnight, predicted at a maximum of -4C in the day, down to about -10C min temperature. Coldest recorden this night was -22.8C, coldest it's been in our country since the 1970's.
This is me taping the landscape out at our fair grounds, which are in the middle of nowhere. The fair's been pretty good so far though, and despite the cold a lot of people showed up, and more on the second day (third is tomorrow, sunday). The snow is absolutely beautiful, and on the drive there e watched the sunlight illuminate the frost-crusted trees along the roadside, dying them pink and glittering.

I'm down at Victoria Channel looking out over the basin area. Just in behind the Azamara Pursuit cruise ship, that is in for refurbishment, I spot what I take for a rather small oil platform. When I got home I checked out what I'd seen and filmed and lo and behold it turned out to be a raised platform dredger from the Netherlands with the very cool name of Wavewalker 1!
At the Neptune Shipyards in Hardinxveld-Giessendam on 21 September of 2012 a new generation of vessel had her naming ceremony. WaveWalker 1, is the very latest idea in working platforms. Her owners are WaveWalker BV, which in turn is an equal part collaboration between Van Oord and Fugro Seacore, and the vessel will be available for rental or charter to the offshore industry.
Fugro Seacore and Van Oord have developed WaveWalker 1 jointly to move around and operate in rough shallow waters, surf zones, beaches and other intertidal locations. Fugro Seacore has been working with different forms of jack-up concept barges for about 14 years in these conditions and has brought this wealth of experience to the partnership. In these locations WaveWalker 1 has the advantage that it is less dependent of the prevailing weather conditions as it can continue to work from its vantage point high above the wave zone. Conducting geotechnical site investigations, drilling operations and other underwater actions take place from a stable platform without having to refloat to move to the next location is a big advantage and allows long time periods of activity with less interruptions.
WaveWalker can move in four directions and by combining the steps she can effectively move diagonally in a series of crab like movements. WaveWalker 1 uses four of its eight side mounted jacking legs, which can be conventionally raised or lowered, allowing the platform to jack-up and down. The other four raised legs are moved in the required direction by sliding them along the sides of the barge in the required direction of travel. These two pairs of legs are then lowered and pre-loaded to ensure the crafts continued stability. The other four ‘standing’ legs are raised and the entire platform, supported on its newly preloaded legs, slides forward through the side frames. The raised legs are then lowered again, preloaded to assume the weight again, and the walking cycle to be repeated. A single ‘step’ has a ‘stride’ (span) of four metres and WaveWalker 1 can complete ten moves per hour, one move every six minutes so she has a walking speed of 40 metres per hour. The sliding arrangements by which WaveWalker 1 moves is a patented process invented and developed by Fugro Seacore Limited called ‘FSCL Gripper’.
