Luyang Lake Wetland Park - A Floating Forest In China
Luyang lake wetland Park
Summer has attracted many tourists to a scenic “floating forest” lake in China to enjoy boat rides.
The Luyang Lake Wetland Park, located in Yangzhou city in Jiangsu, eastern China, possesses a unique forest with trees growing one-meter deep within the lake.
The trees, Metasequoia or dawn redwoods, were once thought to be extinct but were rediscovered later and described as a “living fossil”.
The semi-submerged trees within the lake create a tranquil atmosphere that makes tourists feel as if they are floating.
Aerial view show the trees neatly planted in a row and evenly spaced one after the other.
Tourists can enjoy the forest both by boat and on foot. Floating docks allow people to take a stroll along the forest and on the lake.
Although the scenery is very much green in the summertime, the forest transforms itself into a red and pink sea of trees in the winter and fall.

Luyang Lake, known as Luyanghu in Chinese, is a remarkable ecological treasure located in the Jiangdu District of Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province, China. Originally a marshy wasteland, it has been transformed into a vast green ribbon that stretches out of sight, with lush greenery and clear waters that create a picturesque landscape .
The area, which spans approximately 15.3 square kilometers, features a topography that is high on the edges and low in the center, surrounded by a 16.5-kilometer embankment. It is rich in water resources, with numerous fish ponds across the villages and a total pond area of over 300 acres, along with a 1,300-acre aquaculture farm .
In 1976, experts in soil and forestry recognized the potential of the area, despite its barrenness, due to the abundance of aquatic and terrestrial flora and fauna. They envisioned that with proper afforestation, Luyang Lake could become a thriving habitat for birds and wildlife, essentially turning the wasteland into a green bank on the barren land .
After more than two decades of development, what was once barren land has now become a forest farm. The area boasts 590 acres of Metasequoia (Dawn Redwood) and Taxodium (Cypress) forests, 110 acres of nurseries, 87 acres of fruit trees, 20 acres of bamboo groves, and 358 acres of farmland. The standing timber volume has reached 78,200 cubic meters, with a forest coverage rate of 41% .
Luyang Lake has been established as a nature reserve for birds and wildlife since August 1985. The reserve is home to hundreds of species of wetland and forest birds, belonging to 13 orders and 20 families, including more than 10 species under national protection. The ecological benefits of the reserve have been significant, with a notable absence of pests since its establishment .
In December 2022, Luyang Lake was selected as a provincial-level cultural heritage of place names, further recognizing its cultural and ecological significance .
Visitors to Luyang Lake can enjoy a variety of recreational activities, including boat rides through the water forest, fishing, and exploring the rich natural scenery. The lake is also known for its delicious local cuisine, such as black pork, Luyang salted goose, and the highly regarded Luyang lake duck eggs, which are known for their large yolks and rich taste .
For those interested in visiting, Luyang Lake Wetland Park offers a serene escape from the city with its water and forest landscapes, providing a refreshing experience, especially during the summer months. The park is open daily from 8:30 to 17:30 and is free to enter, with boat rentals available for a fee .
