A Local's Guide To Must-See New Mexico | Best In Travel 2023

BEST IN TRAVEL 2023: NEW MEXICO
Learn why New Mexico is called the Land of Enchantment. Is it because of the state's thousand-year-old pueblos where Native Americans still live in today? Or the fiery-red deserts that you can cross on horseback or by hot air balloon? Or perhaps, is it because of the modern and contemporary art scene that New Mexico's capital Santa Fe is world-famous for? Native American hoop dancer ShanDien LaRance shows us her top places to go and things to do while introducing us to the native land and culture of her home state.

Gallup, New Mexico - Driving Tour 4K

Gallup (/ˈɡæ.ləp/ Navajo: Naʼnízhoozhí /nɑ̀ʔnɪ́ʒòːʒɪ́/; Zuni: Kalabwakin) is a city in McKinley County, New Mexico, United States, with a population of 21,605 as of the 2020 census. A substantial percentage of its population is Native American, with residents from the Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni tribes. Gallup is the county seat of McKinley County[4] and the most populous city between Flagstaff and Albuquerque, along the historic U.S. Route 66.

The city was founded in 1881 as a railhead for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, and named after David Gallup, a paymaster for the railroad. It is on the Trails of the Ancients Byway, one of the designated New Mexico Scenic Byways. Because of the nearby rugged terrain, it was a popular location in the 1940s and 1950s for Hollywood Westerns.

Hotel El Rancho | The Legendary Hollywood Haunt in Gallup NM

OBSCURIST TOURIST 112 - The El Rancho Hotel & Motel in Gallup opened in 1937 as a base for movie productions and served the many big western stars of yesteryear for the duration of filming. It is located on old U.S. Route 66 and became the temporary home for many Hollywood movie stars, including John Wayne, Humphrey Bogart, and Lucille Ball. Above the entrance and below the neon sign sits its slogan: “Charm of Yesterday, Convenience of Tomorrow.

NM True TV Gallup

Its placement on historic Route 66 earned Gallup a spot in that famous song about Getting Your Kicks... But a quick song lyric can't begin to do justice to all this western New Mexico city offers. Movie Stars and Native American artists are just two of the diverse forces that have helped shape the unique community Gallup is today.
