Ganderbal is situated at coordinates 34.23°N 74.78°E and possesses an average elevation of 1,619 metres (5,312 feet). It shares borders with district Srinagar to the south, Bandipore to the north, Kargil to the northeast, Anantnag to the southeast, and Baramulla to the southwest. The district is divided into four blocks, namely Ganderbal, Kangan, Lar, and Wakoora. Nallah Sindh, a significant tributary of the Jehlum river, flows through this region. The river's water is primarily utilized for irrigation and hydroelectric power generation. Notably, three hydroelectric power stations, namely Lower Sindh Hydroelectric Power Project Ganderbal, Upper Sindh Hydroelectric Power Project 1st Kangan, and Upper Sindh Hydroelectric Power Project 2nd Sumbal, generate electricity along the Nallah Sindh. Additionally, the water from the river is used for drinking purposes by the entire Srinagar city through the Rangil Water Treatment Plant. To promote the tourism industry in the Kashmir valley, water rafting tournaments are organized annually at the renowned tourist destination of Sonamarg. Foreign tourists visiting the valley are attracted to the famous Gangabal Lake, located at the foot of Mount Haramukh, in addition to the Manasbal Lake. The mountain lakes of Vaishnosar and Gadsar, situated north of Sonamarg, are also renowned for their scenic beauty.

The district of Srinagar serves as the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir (UT). It is strategically located in the heart of the Kashmir Valley, alongside the Jhelum River, and is encompassed by four districts and the Ladakh UT. To the north, it is bordered by Ladakh (UT), while Ganderbal lies to the south and Pulwama to the northwest. The city of Srinagar itself is positioned at an elevation of 1585 meters above sea level. Renowned for its splendid gardens, picturesque lakes, and charming houseboats, Srinagar is also celebrated for its traditional Kashmiri handicrafts and dried fruits.
The city is situated on both banks of the Jhelum River, known as Vyath in Kashmir. The river flows through the city, meandering across the valley and eventually deepening into the Dal Lake. Srinagar boasts nine ancient bridges that connect its two sections, adding to its allure.
In close proximity to Srinagar lies Hokersar, a wetland of great significance. During the winter season, thousands of migratory birds flock to Hokersar from Siberia and other regions. These birds utilize the wetlands in Kashmir as temporary resting grounds between September and October, as well as during the spring season. These wetlands play a crucial role in supporting a substantial population of wintering, staging, and breeding birds.
Hokersar, located 14 km (8.7 mi) north of Srinagar, is a world-class wetland spanning an area of 13.75 km2 (5.31 sq mi), including both lake and marshy regions. It is the most accessible and well-known wetland in Kashmir, alongside Hygam, Shalibug, and Mirgund. In recent years, Hokersar has witnessed a remarkable increase in the number of migratory birds visiting its premises.
The avian species found in Hokersar include migratory ducks and geese such as the brahminy duck, tufted duck, gadwall, garganey, greylag goose, mallard, common merganser, northern pintail, common pochard, ferruginous pochard, red-crested pochard, ruddy shelduck, northern shoveller, common teal, and Eurasian wigeon.

Kashmir is know for it's numerous popular destinations. Having visited them many times over the year's, on this trip I planned to explore some of it's many hidden gems that are off the regular tourist map.
Ganderbal district is one such place and this was my third visit here but first to this side of the district. Even though Ganderbal is popular for it's many summer treks I was here to check out the places in it's small hidden villages since I was staying in a friend's village home to attend a wedding in their family.

1- Barwala waterfall kangan
Barwalla is a town in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kangan Tehsil of the district Ganderbal. The capital city Srinagar is around 34 km away from the location of the Barwalla Waterfall.
One kilometer away from Kijora Bridge or Kangan’s Dumping Park is the location where Barwalla Waterfall is situated.
If approaching from the Ganderbal side, visitors must make a left turn well before the Kijpora bridge in order to reach this lovely waterfall of Barwalla.
Interesting facts about Barwalla Waterfall Ganderbal
A man-made channel is causing rushing water to fill the area (waterfall).
The Nallah originates in the Harmukh mountain, flows through Naranag, and then meets the Kankanala, which is also a mountain that originates in the Harmukh range.
After the confluence of the two rivers, the Sindh River meets the Barwala River close to the Kijora Bridge.
Barwalla Waterfall is one of Kashmir’s largest artificial waterfalls and is among its most picturesque and stunning features.
The area is encircled by lovely trees.
2. Wayil Ganderbal
Wayil s a tourist village in the Ganderbal District of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is located on the bank of Sind River, around 9 km from Ganderbal, 30 km northeast from Srinagar, at NH 1D which connects Srinagar and Ladakh.

Historians say that the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and was built in 8th century AD. The village here serves as a base camp for some popular treks in this region.

It is the famous hill station is a popular tourist destination situated in the Kashmir Valley, at an altitude of 2,730 metres (8,960 ft) and is close to some of the valley's tallest peaks, alongside the Machoi Glacier, Sirbal Peak, Kolahoi Peak, Amarnath Peak and Machoi Peak.
On the way to Sonmarg at village Gagangir a The Z-Morh Tunnel is being built to keep the road open year-round, and is due for completion in 2024. Moreover a 14.2 km long tunnel is also being constructed at Zojila Pass from Baltal to Gumri to make the Leh highway accessible in winter months.
Sind river which is a tributary of Jhelum River flows through Sonmarg and whole Sind valley. Road to Sonmarg gradually climbs upwards from Vail bridge alongside the Sind River. You can visit ancient Naranag Temple enroute to Sonmarg. It is worth mentioning that this Sind River is not Indus / Sind River it is only a tributary of Jhelum River.
It is important to carry some warm clothes even during summer trip to sonmarg. There are many hotels and cottages available for the night stay however its recommended to make your bookings in advance.
