Hukeng/Hongkeng Tulou Cluster Scenic Spot / 湖坑土楼群, Hukeng (across the street from the Tulou Bus Station in Liulian), contains some beautiful tulou of different shapes - round, square, and U-shaped. Zhencheng Lou (振成楼) is the largest and Rusheng Lou (如升楼) is the smallest tulou. For the real story, though, seek out the smaller tulou, where family life still abounds.

Zhenchenglou / 振成樓, nicknamed the prince of tulou, belongs to Hongkeng Tulou cluster. Inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage 1113-002 It was built in 1912 by the descendants of a rich tobacco merchant. Zhenchenglou is a double ring tulou, its outer ring is four stories high, total 184 rooms, the inner ring is two stories with 32 rooms. The outer ring was partitioned into four segments according to Bagua concept of Chinese Fengshui.

Western influence is evident in the Greek style columns of the ancestral hall, and in the wrought iron railing of the second level corridor.

A point to note is that Zhencheng Lou is the government showcase unit and is therefore padded up for touristy appeal. Those who know avoid the place, simply because everything looks so spick and span. However, many families do live in the tulous, and before and after the tour buses leave, it is a quiet and lovely place to explore. Its rear gate is where the public transport stops and picks up passengers to or from Longyan, Yongding or Xiamen.

¥90, students ¥45. /

Let's Tour Guangxi, China! - Day 2, Part 2 - Hongyan Village!

The next stop on our trip was Hongyan village. This is a peaceful farming village that mostly produces peanuts and persimmons. The peanuts in particular were left to dry in the sun, as you can see at the very end of this video. The village leader took us on a tour of the village and then invited us over to his house for tea. An old man from the village also came and performed magic tricks. To leave the village, we needed to get across the primary river running through it. The options were to walk through it or to hop across on some stepping stones. I chose to use the stepping stones and it was quite difficult--they were a bit slippery! I definitely enjoyed this village. Also, we loved the vehicles with the exposed engines that kept showing up throughout our trip. :P

8 best days out in Winter Hokkaido #5 Tancho, the red crowned crane of Kushiro

The reason I made the trek to Kushiro is because of the red-crowned crane. The Ainu, native people of Hokkaido, called it the Sar-or-un-kamuy, the god of the wetland. In contemporary Japanese it is called Tancho which means red crown.
Also called the Manchurian crane or Japanese crane, it is an endangered species, and is amongst the rarest cranes in the world.

I am sure we have all seen those wonderful nature documentaries of this area that always feature pairs of red-crowned cranes dancing in the snow in an elegant mating ritual. The crane is known as a symbol of luck, longevity, and fidelity.

This elegant bird is iconic here in Japan. Surely the most famous origami shape is the crane.

On my first visit to Japan, on an organised tour, we were all taught to make one by our guide. I have found them on hotel pillows where in the West you would find a chocolate. I have been handed them for various reasons. Once it was from school-children on a project who asked me questions in the street. Another time from a Japanese family who had hosted me.

There is a legend that if you can make a thousand paper cranes then your wish will come true.

The most moving was seeing them made into collages in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, each consisting of that magic thousand. The pictures are displayed alongside a statue of Sasaki Sadako holding a golden crane. At the foot of the statue is a plaque. This is our cry. This is our prayer. Peace in the world.

So who was Sasaki? She was a young girl who was only 2 years old when the bomb fell. Although she seemed unhurt by the blast she and her mother were caught in the black rain that fell after as they fled from the destruction. (Her grandmother’s body was never found.)

She, like thousands and thousands of others, seemed to have escaped harm, but when she was 11 she became ill with leukemia. (It was known in Japan as the “atomic bomb disease” and particularly affected children who had been exposed to the bomb.)

She believed in the legend of the thousand paper cranes and set about making them. Sadly, though she reached her goal, it did not help. She was not granted her wish to live, and lost her battle with the disease when she was just 12 years old.

August 6th, the day the bomb fell on Hiroshima, is commemorated as Peace Day in Japan, and although we all know that Japan uses nuclear power, they do not have nuclear weapons.

Local projects to feed the birds has brought them back from the brink of extinction to a better, though still cause for concern, number. Latest count is about 3000 in the world, half of them being found in Hokkaido.
