Travel tips for the island of Ischia - Italia.
This cute island is located next to Capri, just in front of Naples, and it is often overlooked by tourists traveling in fact to Capri instead.
Famous for its volcanic waters and natural warm springs, Ischia has a lot to offer, like those amazing places I have listed and much more. Furthermore, the island is large enough to allow tourists to bring their own car and drive around unlike in Capri.
Do not miss it during your next trip to Italy!

Places to see in ( Ischia - Italy )
Places to see in ( Ischia - Italy )
Ischia is a volcanic island in the Gulf of Naples, Italy. It's known for its mineral-rich thermal waters. Hot springs bubble up at Maronti Beach, in the south. East, Roman remains lie beneath the sea floor at Cartaromana Beach. The beach has views of medieval Aragonese Castle, linked to Ischia by a stone bridge. Nearby, 18th-century Palazzo dell’Orologio houses the Sea Museum, devoted to Ischia’s fishing tradition.
Ischia is the largest island in the bay of Naples and is considered by many to be the most beautiful, (though Capri is considerably more famous). The island is 10 km from east to west and 7 km north to south. It has a coastline of 34 km and covers an area of 46.3 sq km. It has a permanent population of approximately 58,000. Up to 6 million tourists (principally from the Italian mainland and Germany) flock to the island for its volcanic thermal spas and as well for its beaches and food.
Several towns are located along the island's coast. The largest city in Ischia is actually (and often confusingly, for tourists) called Ischia. The town of Ischia, however, has two different centers: Ischia Porto and Ischia Ponte. Ischia Porto is the commercial center of the island and is named after the main port. Ischia Ponte (ponte meaning bridge in Italian) is named for the area surrounding and including the footbridge that was constructed to connect the Castello Aragonese with the island. Beside the town of Ischia, some of the other centres are Lacco Ameno, Casamicciola, Forio, Barano, Sant'Angelo, and the jointed town of Serrara-Fontana.

Ischia — historically called Pitecusae — has been colonized in turn by the Greeks, Syrausansa, Romans, Saracens, Turks, and Aragonese; all of whom were interested in its excellent strategic position as well as its therapeutic hot-spring waters and of course its attractive landscape. The result of all this varied history can be seen in the ruins of various outposts, towers, and tufa rock shelters hidden all over the island. More recently Ischia has become a frequent backdrop for Italian and American movies such as “Vacanze ad Ischia”, “Appuntamento ad Ischia”, and The Talented Mr.Ripley. The island has also been used as a cinematic stand-in for the Island of Capri.

Isola d'Ischia is a volcanic island in the Tyrrhenian Sea. It lies at the northern end of the Gulf of Naples, about 30 kilometres (19 miles) from the city of Naples. It is the largest of the Phlegrean Islands. Roughly trapezoidal, it measures approximately 10 km (6 miles) east to west and 7 km (4 miles) north to south and has about 34 km (21 miles) of coastline and a surface area of 46.3 square kilometres (17.9 sq mi). It is almost entirely mountainous; the highest peak is Mount Epomeo, at 788 metres (2,585 feet). The island is very densely populated, with 60,000 residents (more than 1,300 inhabitants per square km).
Ischia is the name of the main comune of the island. The other comuni of the island are Barano d'Ischia, Casamicciola Terme, Forio, Lacco Ameno, and Serrara Fontana. Ischia's main industry is tourism, centering on thermal spas that cater mostly to European (especially German) and Asian tourists eager to enjoy the fruits of the island's natural volcanic activity, its hot springs, and its volcanic mud.
The Aragonese Castle (Castello Aragonese, Ischia Ponte) was built on a rock near the island in 474 BC, by Hiero I of Syracuse. At the same time, two towers were built to control enemy fleets' movements. The rock was then occupied by Parthenopeans (the ancient inhabitants of Naples). In 326 BC the fortress was captured by Romans, and then again by the Parthenopeans.
The gardens, located in Forio-San Francesco, were originally the property of English composer William Walton. Walton lived in the villa next to the gardens with his Argentinian wife Susana. When the composer arrived on the island in 1946, he immediately called Russell Page from England to lay out the garden. Wonderful tropical and Mediterranean plants were planted and some have now reached amazing proportions. The gardens include wonderful views over the city and harbour of Forio. A museum dedicated to the life and work of William Walton now comprises part of the garden complex. There's also a recital room where renowned musical artists perform on a regular schedule.
A botanical garden, located in Forio-Citara Bay, is the result of 50 years of the dedicated work of Captain Giuseppe D'Ambra, the owner of the Villa. Giardini Ravino is a botanical garden with one of the richest collection of cacti and succulents cultivated outdoors in Europe. Giardini Ravino has been the subject of an award from the OPE (European Parliamentary Observatory) for the most ecofriendly property in South Italy.
Villa La Colombaia is located in Lacco Ameno and Forio territories. Surrounded by a park, the villa (called The Dovecote) was made by Luigi Patalano, a famous local socialist and journalist. It is now the seat of a cultural institution and museum dedicated to Luchino Visconti.

The beach of San Francesco is located a few kilometers from the port of Forio; easily reachable both by car and by public transport.
On the right side is surmounted by the spectacular promontory of Punta Caruso, destination for those who love the rocks and a bit 'of tranquility.
This beach is suitable for those who love water sports, tourist facilities at sea and maybe dine in a typical island restaurant, lit only by the light of the first sunset and the moon after. The beach of San Francesco is located in the municipality of Forio. It can be reached either by bus or by car, along the main road of the island.
For those who prefer the bus, line 24, which starts from Citara, stops a few minutes from the beach, while the lines 1 - 2 - CD - CS stop on the highway 10 minutes away. Not far away, you can conveniently leave your car at the secure parking lot.

Forio is a town and comune of c. 17,000 inhabitants in the Metropolitan City of Naples, southern Italy, situated on the island of Ischia. Its territory includes the town of Panza, the only frazione of Forio and of the island of Ischia.
Panza has always been an independent village since the 16th century when a first governmental organization was introduced on the island. There are numerous coastal watchtowers, built from the Middle Ages against Saracen and African pirates raids.
In the 1975 the inhabitants of Panza tried to become an independent comune but the referendum, claimed by the inhabitants of Forio, was denied by the Campania's Regional Government.

Places to see in ( Forio - Italy ) Spiaggia di Citara
Under the superb grandeur of the Epomeo between valleys and hills sloping towards the sea, near Forio, lies the beautiful beach of Citara (or Cetara). A sea that is always tempting and clear, lapping little by little, mingling in some places with the renowned thermal waters. Citara means water that makes fertilize or makes proliferate. The historian D'Ascia states that the water of Citara was placed by the Romans under the protection of Venus Citarea, which was found a statue of white marble, which was then destroyed.
Today here in the sun, in the exaltation of a nature that touches the divine and far from the frenetic modern life we find ourselves men. Here, sheltered from the high coast of Punta Imperatore, in a frame of Bougainville and tropical and subtropical plants, in 1962 the construction of a very modern thermal-bath complex began, the garden city of the Poseidon spa, which in a unforgettable contour of swimming pools, gardens and services, exploits with modern standards the high healing qualities of the water.
It is a beautiful beach of soft clear sand, very long and well-equipped shoreline, only a minor portion of which is free. The sea is very beautiful, turquoise, crystal clear and transparent, ideal for swimming and swimming, as well as for various water sports. The beach is almost always crowded, for its beauty, for the various services it offers (equipped establishments, bars and restaurants) and for being one of the sunniest beaches on the island, in a position that allows you to admire the breathtaking sunsets.
This modern tourist world is flanked by an ancient legend inspired by the bizarre rock formations that can be seen from the beach: it is said that here the Phaeacian ship with Ulysses has passed and that on its return it has been transformed as a punishment in a rock. It is said, moreover, that two men tried to escape from the ship, but that they too were turned into rocks, before being able to save on the beach. On the other hand, the oral tradition states that in these waters bathers used to bathe their vestals, and that the thermal waters of these springs had a revitalizing capacity on the amateurs of those who got wet.
