Scottsville, Virginia: Historic port on the James River
This small town played a significant role in the development and history of the Piedmont colonial frontier. Water transport of commodities was the most efficient means during the colonial era. The James River was the main avenue and access to the western frontier as tobacco production shifted from the Tidewater to the Piedmont. Boats were the best way to transport tobacco down to Richmond and other markets in a time before the railroads and poorly developed roads. Bateau boats evolved as the heavy haulers. When the James River and Kanawha Canal was built, towed boats became the mainstay. Cargo and packet passenger boats predominated until the coming of the railroads.
