Driving Around Small Town Festus, MO in 4k Video

Filmed on Thursday, March 23, 2023, I drive around the village of Festus, Missouri to see what's going on.

Festus is a city situated in Jefferson County, Missouri, United States, and is also a suburb of St. Louis. It had a population of 12,706 as of the 2020 census.

Festus was first called Tanglefoot, and under the latter name was platted in 1878. A post office called Festus has been in operation since 1883.

Festus is the home of the alt-country band The Bottle Rockets.

The town is mentioned in the 1974 country song (We're Not) The Jet Set, in which George Jones and Tammy Wynette sing about road tripping around the Midwestern and Southern part of the United States in a Chevrolet while falling in love.

At the 2010 census there were 11,602 individuals, 4,636 households, and 3,036 families living in the city.

Males had a median income of $36,159 versus $25,108 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,035. About 7.0% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.6% of those under age 18 and 6.1% of those age 65 or over.

The racial makeup of the city was 93.5% White, 3.4% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.8% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2%. #driving #travel #drivingtour

Missouri's Twin Cities: Festus and Crystal City, Missouri 4K.

Festus and Crystal City are both in Jefferson County, Missouri and are suburbs of St. Louis. Jefferson County, Missouri for a long time was labeled as the meth capital of the United States. Despite the meth usage in this area, they seem like they're decent suburbs with decent schools, and benefit economically from being apart of the Greater St. Louis area.

US 61/67 - Imperial to Mehlville, Missouri

US 61 enters Missouri south of Steele, passing under a concrete arch that was constructed by the Mississippi County, Arkansas highway department in 1924. The alignment of the highway is closely followed by I-55 between there and the St. Louis area, with portions of the two highways overlapping. Between Howardville and Sikeston, US 61 overlaps with US 62. At Sikeston, US 61 also meets US 60. Crossing Route 32 at one of the oldest French Colonial settlements west of the Mississippi River (1735), Ste. Genevieve, the road continues through Ste. Genevieve County. The highway then turns northwest and meets US 67 at Festus. The two highways overlap until separating in the St. Louis area at Ladue, where US 61 meets I-64 and US 40, just north of the junction of US 61 and Old Route 66 (now Route 100), located in Kirkwood, which is referred to locally as the rock 'n roll crossroads of America. While in the St. Louis area, US 61 is on Lindbergh Boulevard.

After meeting I-64 and US 40, US 61 turns west with them and its overlap with the Avenue of the Saints begins. At Wentzville, the overlap with I-64 and US 40 ends when it meets I-70, with the former ending at I-70. It continues in a general northwesterly route, meeting US 54 at Bowling Green and US 36 and I-72 at Hannibal, an intersection which is I-72's western terminus. Northwest of Hannibal, US 61 meets US 24 and the two overlap until they separate at Taylor. US 61 continues north until near Wayland, where the highway turns east at Route 27 and the overlap with the Avenue of the Saints ends. Shortly before leaving Missouri, US 61 meets US 136 and the two overlap until entering Iowa. US 61 in Missouri was formerly known as Route 9.

US 61 runs along the western side of the Mississippi River between Memphis, Tennessee, and Dubuque, Iowa, and therefore never enters the state of Illinois.

Going from south to north, US 67 enters Missouri at the Arkansas state line. About 10 miles (16 km) north of the state line, it intersects US 160. At the southwest corner of Poplar Bluff, Business Route 67 goes into Poplar Bluff while US 67 bypasses Poplar Bluff to the west on a freeway-grade highway. It then joins US 60 at the northwest corner of Poplar Bluff. Both 60 and 67 then follow a four-lane route to an interchange about 6 miles (9.7 km) northwest of Poplar Bluff, where US 60 heads west toward Springfield, while US 67 heads north to St. Louis.

Construction is complete to divide the highway through Wayne, Madison, and Butler Counties, including bypasses around Greenville and Cherokee Pass. The new divided highway opened on August 19, 2011, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Additionally, MoDOT has extended the divided highway south to US 160 south of Poplar Bluff.

From Fredericktown, US 67 passes through Farmington, where an existing interchange with Route 221 was converted to a diverging diamond interchange in September 2012. US 67 then proceeds through Park Hills, Desloge, and Bonne Terre. About 25 miles (40 km) north of Bonne Terre, US 67 crosses Interstate 55 and enters Festus and Crystal City and picks up US 61. This becomes known as Truman Boulevard in Festus and Crystal City, Highway 61-67 from Herculaneum to Imperial, and Jeffco Boulevard from Arnold until it exits Jefferson County and enters St. Louis County, over the Meramec River where it becomes Lemay Ferry Road.

When US 67/61 reaches St. Louis County, It travels Lemay Ferry Road (Route 267) until it reaches Lindbergh Boulevard. There, it overlaps Lindbergh Boulevard (known as Kirkwood Road in Kirkwood). US 61 then turns west onto I-64/US 40 West towards Wentzville. Lindbergh, named for aviator Charles Lindbergh, continues north through Frontenac, Ladue, Creve Coeur, Maryland Heights, Bridgeton, Hazelwood and Florissant until it reaches Lewis & Clark Boulevard (Route 367). From there, it continues straight north to West Alton, Missouri and then crosses the Mississippi River on the Clark Bridge and enters Alton, Illinois.

The only vehicular tunnel in Missouri is located on US 67 at St. Louis Lambert International Airport, where the road tunnels under Runway 11/29.

Driving Around Downtown Hannibal, MO in 4k Video

Filmed on Friday, March 17, 2023, I drive around the small town Hannibal, Missouri to see what's going on. At the end of the video, I take a stroll around Mark Twain's childhood home.

Hannibal is a city along the Mississippi River in Marion and Ralls counties in the U.S. state of Missouri. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, the population was 17,312.

The site of Hannibal was originally inhabited by various cultures of indigenous Native American tribes.

The river community is best known as the mid-19th-century boyhood home of author Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain). Twain drew from his childhood settings for his novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Numerous historical sites are associated with Mark Twain and the places depicted in his fiction.

Heritage tourism contributes to the Hannibal economy, as the city attracts both American and international tourists. The Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum marked its 100th anniversary in 2012; it has had visitors from all 50 states and some 60 countries. Most Hannibal residents enjoy the visitors, and the town at large benefits from tourism revenue.

After the United States acquired the Louisiana Territory west of the Mississippi in 1803, European-American settlers began to enter the area. Its early European settlements were established by ethnic French colonists, some from Illinois, who largely spoke French and were Roman Catholic in religion.

Hannibal was laid out in 1819 by Moses Bates and named after Hannibal Creek (now known as Bear Creek). The name is derived from Hannibal, a hero of ancient Carthage.

The city grew slowly, with a population of 30 by 1830. But by 1846, Hannibal was Missouri's third-largest city when the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad was organized by John M. Clemens (Mark Twain's father) and associates.

Construction of railroads to the area and increased steamboats on the Mississippi River had stimulated growth. By 1850 it had 2,020 residents.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the city has served as a regional marketing center for livestock and grain, as well as other products produced locally, such as cement and shoes. Cement for the Empire State Building and Panama Canal was manufactured at the Atlas Portland Cement Company in the nearby unincorporated company town of Ilasco.

The Mark Twain Memorial Lighthouse was constructed in 1933 as a public works project under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It has been lit on ceremonial occasions at three separate times by Presidents Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and Bill Clinton.

A thriving artist community has developed here because of its central location between the East and West coasts, and affordable and stable real estate prices.

The Underwood Company built a General Mills plant here because its founder appreciated Mark Twain's writing and wanted to help his hometown.

Major employers include the Hannibal Regional Hospital and Hannibal Clinic. Major manufacturers include BASF Chemical Corporation (formally American Cyanamid), General Mills, and Watlow Electric Manufacturing Company.

Tourism is a major part of Hannibal's economy, in large part because Samuel Clemens lived there as a boy and immortalized the town under his pen name, Mark Twain. The Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum and Mark Twain Cave are two of the city's major attractions.

Nearby is Lover's Leap, a cliffside overlooking the Mississippi River and downtown Hannibal. The name comes from the local legend of two Native American lovers who were forbidden by their respective tribes to marry each other. Warriors were sent to kill the lovers, but the lovers, finding themselves cornered at the top of the cliff, embraced each other and threw themselves off the cliff to their deaths.

At the 2010 census, there were 17,916 people, 7,117 households, and 4,400 families living in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 88.8% White, 7.1% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.6% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.5% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.8%.

The median household income was $29,892 and the median family income was $37,264. The per capita income for the city was $16,902. About 11.3% of families and 14.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.2% of those under age 18 and 10.8% of those age 65 or over. #driving #travel #drivingtour

Hughes Mountain in Missouri 10-10-20

Hopped in the BMW i3 REx and zipped down to Hughes Mountain near Irondale MO. 170 or so miles into no charger land. Topped off the i3 in Festus MO with electricity after using mainly gas to get there. We started at 100% and used gas and electric and ended up in Festus with around 18%. Filled up to 85% and headed down. Had to get gas after all the travels in the area after leaving Johnson Shutins and to make it back out and to St. Louis. Topped off gas once more and headed home. Our Tesla wouldn’t be able to make the trip since we are always changing plans when traveling like this. Since there are NO chargers in this area you can’t CHANGE plans unless they involve over night stay at a camp ground or heading back to a charger. You can’t go deeper into the mountains and mess around like you can in an ICE or a decent hybrid or i3 like ours.
