This video covers part of Day 3 of our Road Trip from California to Missouri (by way of Texas).
After the events of Day 2, we spent the night at a really nice RV Resort in Eloy, Arizona called Silverado RV Park. I believe it is a 55+ RV park. We did not see any children running around.
In this video, we drove from Eloy, Arizona to Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Being the second day in Arizona our jokes were running very dry...

Benson Arizona to Eloy Arizona
AZ 84 East - The Gila Bend-Casa Grande Hwy, Jimmie Kerr Blvd - I-8 near Stanfield to Eloy
On this channel we talk a lot about the US Highway System. Many of you may know that one of the major points of the system was to connect all of the major cities, towns and capitals with the rest of the country via numbered highways. While this was a noble goal, it didn't always provide the quickest and fastest route for some. One such example was US 80. Connecting Savannah GA to San Diego CA, it was the southern-most transcontinental US Highway. While the route was mostly direct, running through some of the major southern cities such as Montgomery, AL, Jackson, MS, Dallas, Fort Worth and El Paso, TX, Las Cruses, NM, Tucson and Phoenix, AZ, it was in that latter state where the highway took a more meandering route.
As US 80 entered Yuma, AZ from California, it continued on that relatively direct path. Once it reached Gila Bend however, planners elected to follow the Gila River into Phoenix proper. This meant traffic heading towards Tucson or other points east would have to go through busy Phoenix itself before dropping back down to Tucson via Florence, around 200 miles one way from Gila Bend to Tucson. The state of Arizona noticed the problem early on and rectified the issue by establishing State Route 84 a year after the establishment of US 80. This saved travelers around 80 miles by directing them through Casa Grande instead. This became the defacto route for long distance travelers, having higher traffic counts than US 80 between Gila Bend and Phoenix. This was only one of two major detours US 80 took however.
The second was from Benson to Lordsburg. US 80 elected to take a route through Bisbee, 170 miles. In 1931, following the success of AZ 84, the states of Arizona and New Mexico opted to create a new road from just outside Lordsburg to Benson. This became AZ 86 and NM 14, cutting that same trip to 110 miles. In 1955, just before the creation of the Interstate System, the Highway 90 Association helped convince the state of Arizona to apply for an extension of US 90 to San Diego. The proposed route would have replaced AZ 86 and 84. This plan never occurred, at least not with that number.
Additionally, AZ 87 was established in 1927 as well creating a short cut from Phoenix to Tucson via Sacaton and Eloy, where AZ 87 ended at AZ 84 just southeast of Casa Grande. This led to US 80 becoming less popular with locals who instead opted to take the shortcuts.
With the Interstate System coming online in 1956, the intent of road building had shifted. Instead of trying to connect every city and town, the idea was to create limited-access, high speed roadways. When laying out the routes, Interstate 8 was marked to replace US 80, instead using a direct line from Yuma to Phoenix. This plan was changed before the finalization of the system however, and what became Interstate 8 was a replacement of US 80 from San Diego to Gila Bend and of AZ 84 from Gila Bend to Casa Grande. Interstate 10, running on a diagonal between Phoenix and Tucson not too dissimilar to US 80 and AZ 87, opted instead to use an alignment via Casa Grande instead of Florence.
AZ 84 had become such a major route that it's name sake was used on the state's first limited access highway: The Tucson Controlled Access Highway. Baring some resemblance to modern freeways - albeit with some at-grade intersections - the highway carried the AZ 84 Alternative (84A) banner during and after it's construction from 1950-1956. This highway was later upgraded to become a full fledged freeway in 1961 and now serves as part of Interstate 10 from Miracle Mile to 6th St. At the same time, the state began upgrading AZ 84 from Picacho to Tucson to a divided four-lane highway. This road too became Interstate 10 and remained un-upgraded until the 2010s when the state began upgrading the roadway to six lanes. Additionally, Arizona was chasing an extension of US 93 at the time via Wickenburg, Phoenix and Tucson to Nogales. This led to AZ 93 being co-routed with AZ 84 from Casa Grande to Tucson. This never happened, and AZ 93 was quietly removed south of Phoenix in 1984.

AZ 87 North - Eloy at I-10 to Sacaton
AZ 87 is one of the original numbered roads in the Arizona Highway System dating to 1927. The initial plan was to connect Casa Grande to Mesa with a relatively short route. Running from planned AZ 84 to US 80 in Mesa, this plan was later revised pushing the southern terminus of AZ 87 southeast to Eloy where AZ 87 ended at AZ 84. The original planned route from the final route near Sacaton to Casa Grande was adopted as AZ 187 also in 1927.
AZ 87 remained a relatively unimportant route, serving as a route to rural Pinal County and running nearly parallel to US 80's mainline through Florence, just further west.
In the 1960s, plans to extend AZ 87 much further north picked up steam, stringing together new roads, old county routes and some old state routes into a main trunkline-type route. This new route increased the milage of AZ 87 nearly five-fold, from 58 miles to 288 and moved its northern terminus to AZ 264 at Second Mesa on the Hopi Reservation. This new route replaced AZ 65, which ran from Winslow to the Coconino Forest, which was established in 1936 and extended twice: north to Second Mesa in 1961 and south to Payson in 1966 before being renumbered to AZ 87 in 1967. 1961 also saw the extension of AZ 287, with it's western terminus being moved from AZ 87 in Coolidge to the AZ 84/AZ 187 interchange in downtown Casa Grande. This caused a multiplex along AZ 87 from Florence Blvd to Coolidge.
AZ 87 has seen major improvements in recent years. It was moved from an old alignment that ran through Olberg to straighter alignment further south allowing for less disruption from local traffic. AZ 84 was relinquished back to Casa Grande, Eloy and Pinal County in the late 1990s from the AZ 84/93/287 interchange to AZ 87, with the section from Stanfield to Casa Grande and a stub from I-10 to AZ 87 being the only remnants in the system. This section of AZ 84 had fallen out of favor due to I-10, so the primary traffic was on AZ 87. This became a problem as years went on, as AZ 87 traffic had to merge onto AZ 84 to reach I-10. This was not remedied until 2019 with the opening of the new AZ 87 and I-10 interchange. I believe at this point, the stub of AZ 84 was handed over to AZ 87 fixing this gap, and old AZ 84 traffic must now stop and yield to AZ 87 traffic.
With the boom of affordable housing in western Pinal County, the importance of AZ 87 has increased even after the building of I-10. AZ 87 serves as a backup route to Casa Grande - currently the second largest city in the county, a backup route for the town of Florence, and the main connection for the city of Coolidge to the Phoenix Metro Area. With the building boom in Phoenix showing no signs of stopping, AZ 87 will only continue to get busier as time progresses.
