20150710: Day 33, Denali to JBER, Anchorage, AK
The 10th of July 2015, day 33 of our travels. Due to the continuing issues with wildfire smoke-filled air we departed Denali around 10:00 hrs. that morning heading south on the A-3 (George Parks Highway) and the A-1 (Glenn Highway) towards Ft. Richardson, part of the reorganized Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) military base where we would park our RV at the Black Spruce CG, JBER, Anchorage, AK campground until the 28th of July when we would then head towards Seward, AK. These 18 days would be our longest stay at one location since we began our road trip. There was a 30-day limit placed on campers at this site to allow time for others to also enjoy the campsite. We did have to periodically renew (weekly?) our campsite permissions. There are two RV campsites on JBER, one on the USAF (Elmendorf) side of the base, and another on the ARMY (Ft. Richardson) side of the base. The USAF campground had no sewer hookups, so we opted to stay on the ARMY side, the “Black Spruce Campground.”
Staying on a military base campground brings a touch of the military back into my life. We would hear revile each morning, was able to eat at the chow hall, and hear the noise of freedom several times a day as the F-22 fighter aircraft would fly overhead on their missions. The campsites were built as “pull-offs” from the gravel road that meandered throughout the campsite.
The weather during our stay consisted of a mix of light rain and sunshine. Partly cloudy most of the time. The rain came in the form of a light sprinkle with one exception when we had a real downpour!
One evening we were visited by a moose cow. We were sitting in our trailer at the dinning table, the pups were in their usual place under the table in their bed. They began barking when they saw a moose head appear at our RV’s entry door! Looking up to see what was going on caught me by surprise! By the time I collected my thoughts, grabbed a camera and headed towards the door…Ms. Moose was heading down the road.

20150724: Day 47, Elmendorf Static Displays & Eagles
The 24th of July, 2015 was our 47th day of travel. We visited the Elmendorf side of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, JBER, AK, in search of the WWII P-38 that had crashed on Attu, Aleutian Islands, then was recovered, restored and put on display at Elmendorf AFB, AK.
Also spent time checking out the various vintage aircraft static displays...my favorite remains the Scorpion as you may be able to tell by having more than a couple slides of that aircraft in the presentation!
On the 22nd of September, 1995 a Boeing E-3B Sentry AWACS Yukla crashed shortly after takeoff, killing all on board...including members from American and Canadian military forces. We've included a tribute as found at Elmendorf to that event.
Finally...a surprise added attraction...Elmendorf's Bald Eagle Aviary with two not worse for wear American Bald Eagle residents on display.

The Travis Air Force Base Heritage Center is one of the largest collections of military aircraft on the west coast. The museum consists of a collection of American military aircraft from various periods and wars that includes a B-52, B-29, C-124, C-133, and a F102 and T-33 fighter jets. Inside the museum consists of an engine room of various aircrafts, WWII exhibit, cockpit trainers, and a bombs and missiles room.

North to Alaska
Recent space a trip taken out of Jackson, Ms to Elmendorf AFB (Anchorage) Ak. The aircraft was loaded with troops going to their annual training (AT) but since there were vacant seats, other personnel (including military retirees) were eligible for the remaining seats. Space a has no cost to the taxpayer, although the seat (if available) is free, all other expenses (food, ground transportation, lodging, etc) is the responsibility of the individual.
Space A is not for the feint of heart, you can be bumped anywhere along the route, and ALL flights are 1 way ONLY. (My 1st visit to Alaska in 2008 was because I was bumped there from an aircraft returning from Japan) Seats usually leave a lot to be desired although this aircraft was equipped with fairly comfortable seats. Jump seats or web seats around the sides are the norm.
We traveled with our frequent travel companions, the Garrens (from Pearl Ms.) on this trip, splitting expenses while at the same time, multiplying the fun.

Here is some of the history of JBER.
Joint Base Elmendorf - Richardson JBER encompasses 64,213 acres on coastal lowlands surrounded by high mountain chains. It is located in south central Alaska, adjacent to Anchorage. The topography is dominated by glacial features and lakes and swamps are plentiful. A total of 50,904 acres is available for training. The first Air Force unit to be assigned to Alaska, the 18th Pursuit Squadron, arrived in February 1941. The Army has served in Alaska since 1867, when Soldiers of the United States Army, 9th Infantry Regiment, took part in the ceremonies that raised the Stars and Stripes over Sitka and transferred Russian lands to the United States. Construction of an Army post six miles northeast of Anchorage began on 8 June 1940. The War Department General Order Number 9, dated 12 December 1940, designated the military reservation as Fort Richardson, and the flying field at Fort Richardson was designated Elmendorf Field. Fort Richardson, named for Wilds P. Richardson, was built in 1940-1941 near Anchorage. Construction of the base began on June 8, 1940. The first Army Air Corps personnel arrived on Aug. 12, 1940, led by Maj. Everett S. Davis. On Nov. 12, 1940, the War Department formally designated the installation Fort Richardson.
Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, Army and Navy engineers began building airstrips in the Aleutian Islands to defend against possible Japanese attacks. U.S. Army units also built an initial pioneer road in 1942 for the Alaska-Canada (ALCAN) Highway in less than eight months. In 1943, civilian contractors followed and constructed a more permanent, all-weather highway. The 1,420-mile road was built as an overland supply route to get personnel and equipment to Alaska. The ALCAN Highway complimented military infrastructure that was built throughout Alaska than ensured Allied forces could defend the territory, and carry the fight to the enemy, if necessary.
The air facilities and flying field on the post were named Elmendorf Field in honor of Capt. Hugh M. Elmendorf. In 1947 the Army planned to move its operations to a new site named Fort Richardson, adjacent to the WWII installation. The Air Force assumed control of the original Fort Richardson and re-named it Elmendorf Air Force Base. JBER's host unit is the 673d Air Base Wing; but we are also home to headquarters, Alaskan Command and 11th Air Force headquarters, US Army Alaska Headquarters, the Alaska National Guard, the 3rd Wing, the 176th Wing (ANG), the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, the 477th Fighter Group.

A pilot's overly aggressive aerial acrobatics and overconfidence were blamed in an investigative report on a C-17 plane crash at an Anchorage military base that killed all four airmen on board.
Besides pilot error, the crew on board was also faulted for failing to notice the dangerous situation that culminated with the plane stalling and crashing into some woods July 28 at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
