Paisley Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the historic Scottish county of Renfrewshire, and around seven miles west of Glasgow, is the town of Paisley.

Geographically, Paisley is situated in the west central Lowlands of Scotland, on the northern edge of the Gleniffer Braes (brae being the Scots language word for the slope or brow of a hill), straddling the banks of the White Cart Water, a tributary of the River Clyde.

In 1163 a priory was founded at Paisley by Walter, High Steward of Scotland. This was later raised to the status of abbey in 1245. In 1307 it was burned by King Edward I of England, but later rebuilt.

In 1488 Paisley was made a burgh of barony by James IV of Scotland. This allowed it full control over its own trade, including the right to hold a weekly market on Mondays, and two annual public fairs.

From the 18th century, Paisley was transformed from a small market town into a significant textile manufacturing centre during the Industrial Revolution. Silk gauze weaving was introduced in 1759. By 1781, there were 6,800 looms in Paisley, 2,000 weaving linen and 4, 800 weaving silk. By the 1790s, demand for silk declined due to a change in fashion. However, the mills in Paisley were able to pivot towards imitation Kashmir (i.e. cashmere) shawls, which would become known as Paisley shawls. With their teardrop motif, these became highly fashionable among women of the 19th century.

The company Coats Group plc was founded in 1755 in Paisley. This developed into what is today the world's largest manufacturer and distributor of sewing thread and supplies. On the High Street are statues of brothers, Peter and Thomas Coats. In addition to running the company, they undertook philanthropic work in the town, donating large sums towards educational facilities and recreation grounds.

Paisley is represented in sport by St Mirren Football Club. Founded in 1877, they play their home games at St Mirren Park just northwest of the town centre. The name is a reference to the patron saint of the town and founder of the religious community which grew to become Paisley Abbey.

Smithfield Wife Selling and William Wallace - MUST SEE LONDON - London Guide

SUPPORT MY CHANNEL ON PATREON ➜
In this London Guide Joolz Guides goes to Smithfield Market where William Wallace was executed and wife selling used to happen!
Smithfield wife selling wasn't strictly legal but it was quite a common practice. In Thomas Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge the protagonist sells his wife at the beginning of the book.
William Wallace was dragged here from London Bridge before being hung drawn and quartered and it's also the famous venue of the peasant's revolt, where Watt Tyler was famously killed.
If you like this London guide about Smithfield wife selling check out and subscribe to Joolz Guides - a London Guide for Londoners!

Johnstone Castle via Drone

Lovely wintery scene surrounding Johnstone Castle is a structure and former mansion in the town of Johnstone in Renfrewshire, Scotland. It belonged to the Houstouns of Milliken, who acquired the estate of Easter Cochrane in 1773.

Based right in the middle of Johnstone's housing scheme of the same name, taken by Paisley Buddie. He had a small issue with the freezing weather, Camera inside kept going unresponsive.
