We then climb up Jugurtha's Table, a mesa that gives incredible views of the Ez-Zghalma plain in Kef Governorate. You can even see into Algeria from the top! Coast North of Sousse

Today we are exploring some coastal tourist sites north of Sousse. We begin with the very tourist-friendly Port El Kantaoui, complete with golf course and modern marina. We then drive north 10km to reach Sebkhet Halk el Manzel, an amazing salt lake that is home to a large flock of Greater Flamingo. This is designated as a Ramsar Site, because it is a Wetland of International Importance. We then drive another 10km north to Plage El Madfoun, a beautiful sandy beach on the north side of the quaint seaside town of Hergla (which has loads of great eating options!) From Hergla, we head 30km north to the archaeological site of Uppenna, where we find a Byzantine fortress and also a basilica with mosaics and Latin inscriptions. We finish the exploration driving 20km northwest to Takrouna, for a rather sad update on the situation at the popular Amazigh Café Le Rocher Bleu.

Exploring the Ksour (ancient hill forts) of southern Tunisia around Tataouine - Bradt Guides

Tataouine Governorate in southern Tunisia is most famous as one of the sites where George Lucas shot the original Star Wars films in the 1970s. However, it is also full of ksour: fortified granaries built by the local tribes between the eleventh and nineteenth centuries. Join me as I drive the 50km Maztouria Loop to the south-east of Tataouine and explore nine of the ksour of Jebel Abiadh (the White Mountains).

Some ksour are on mountains, some are on hilltops, a few are even on valley floors. Most are now abandoned, with a few being destroyed by French colonial forces due to local resistance to French rule. However, some of these incredible buildings have either been restored as historical sites, sites of pilgrimage for Star Wars fans or are in current use as housing, market places or even tourist accommodation!

KSAR OULED SOLTANE, TUNISIA

Ksar Ouled Soltane is a fortified granary, or ksar, located in the Tataouine district in southern Tunisia. The ksar is spread out over two courtyards, each of which has a perimeter of multi-story vaulted granary cellars, or ghorfas.
Like other ksour (plural of ksar) built by Berber communities Ksar Ouled Soltane, is located on a hilltop, to help protect it from raiding parties in previous centuries.
Ksar Ouled Soltane is now a tourist destination, with visitors coming to see its well-preserved granary vaults. It was also featured in the film Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace in some of the scenes used to represent the slave quarters of Mos Espa, where the character Anakin Skywalker lived as a boy

Top place to visit in Tunisia | StarWars shooting spot Tataouine | Tunisia Travelling Day 7 Vlog #62

This is the last video of my trip to Tunisia. Tunisia is a beautiful place to visit and, today I leaving the incredibly beautiful village of Shenini. I am going to another town called Tataouine in Tunisia with three Italian friends (we stayed in the same hotel in Shenini). Tataouine is a city in Tunisia. The name of the town was immortalized in Star Wars as Tatooine, but most of the filming was not done here, but at Matmata.

I was in Tunisia for 9 days. During these 9 days, I visited different cities from the North to the South of the country.
Had countless memorable experiences, ate amazing food, and saw wonderful sights and places. I am sharing all this with you through this Tunisia series blog.

KSAR MEDENINE, TUNISIA

Ksar Medenine is an old ksars in the town Medenine in southeastern Tunisia, on the main route to Libya. Medenine is the capital city of Medenine Governorate. Ksar Medenines was featured twice in Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace: first, when Anakin Skywalker leads his new friends to his home in the sand storm, and the second time when Anakin runs back to his mother, just before he goes with Qui-Gon Jinn, both on the same location. It is one of three ksars around Tataouine to represent the Slave Quarters Row on Tatooine.

SOME AMAZING KSARS IN SOUTHERN TUNISIA

Ksars in the Maghreb typically consist of attached houses, often having collective ghorfa (granaries) and other structures like a mosque, bath, oven, and shops. Ksour are widespread among the oasis populations of North Africa. Ksars are sometimes situated in mountain locations to make defence easier; they often are entirely within a single, continuous wall. The building material of the entire structure is normally adobe, or cut stone and adobe. The idea of the ksar as a granary is a confused notion of two things, the granary itself, found within a ksar, and the ksar, which is a village, normally with granaries within it. Ksars form one of the main manifestations of Berber architecture.
