From the winding alleys of the medina, it is filled with tantalizing aromas and colourful bazaars to the sleek and contemporary architecture of the modern city.

🇹🇳 The most unbelievable thing I saw during my time in Africa: the amazing Roman amphitheater at El Jem (FKA Thysdrus).
Follow this building through time, and you'll see the entire story of empire and civilisation in the mediterranean.
This was undoubtedly the highlight of my trip to Tunisia, and represents the centrepiece that I took out of my video of crossing Tunisia by train:
Making a day trip from Tunis to El Jem by train is absolutely possible and ridiculously cheap, so it definitely fits your budget backpacking itinerary. I got a two-week train pass for $25 to travel all over Tunisia, but you can also take a louage for just a few bucks, or go by bus or private tour from Tunis.
If you're also planning some Tunisian travel and want a travel guide, check out my other Tunisia videos if you want to see all the things I saw, did and ate while in that country :)

El Jem Roman Amphitheatre 4K (UNESCO World Heritage Site: Ancient Thysdrus, Tunisia, North Africa)
Today we walk around the almost empty Amphitheatre of El Jem, in modern El Djem, Mahdia Governorate, Tunisia, North Africa. This is one of the three largest amphitheatres ever built by the Ancient Romans (the other two being the more famous Colosseum in Rome and the now destroyed Amphitheatre of Capua). Many tour guides will tell you that Ridley Scott's epic Gladiator was filmed here in 2000, but I'm pretty sure they actually filmed in Malta with a replica amphitheatre, possibly using El Jem as inspiration. Either way: what an amazing site, and an almost private experience that you could never have at the Colosseum!

EL JEM TUNISIA The magnificent Roman Colosseum of Tunisia | Why you should visit Sousse!
Welcome back to our vlog of Tunisia where we continue our journey to the slightly eastern part of the country.
Taking a train from Tunis we made our way to the magnificent and historic El Jem, the third largest colossuem of the Roman period, tried out some Tunisian fast food, took the famous louage and finally reached Sousse. We explored the Sousse medina, interacted with locals and enjoyed our stay in this beautiful city of Tunisia.

Tunisia Visa for Indian Passports in Sep 2023 :
As of Sep 2023, Indian passport holders need pre-arranged visas to Tunisia from an overseas Tunisian consulate. We applied from the consulate of Tunisia in Nice, France and the process was time consuming.
Visa Fees: 75 Euros each (cash only)
Documents submitted: Passport copy, Residence Proof in France, Filled in and signed Application Form, Photograph, Hotel Bookings (Booked on Booking.com, having accommodation proof is mandatory for Tunisia tourist visa) and round trip flight tickets
20th July 2023: Submitted application, paid visa fees, they did not keep the passport with them.
12th Aug 2023: Went to the consulate for a follow up on the visa processing, they told us our file reached the Tunisian Ministry on 26th July, decision was still pending.
25th Aug 2023: Got a call from the consulate that the visa has been approved and to come with our passports.
25th Aug 2023 (same day): Went to the consulate and got the visa stamp.
The entire process was pretty straight forward and simple, the hardest part being the wait from 20th July to 25th Aug. Normal processing time for Tunisia visa here is around 3-4 weeks.

El Djem | Amphitheatre | Exploring Tunisia!
Very excited to bring you along on me trip to El Djem in Tunisia!
That means of course touring the Amphitheatre of Thysdus of the Amphitheatre of El Jem.
Join me as we step back in to history and roam in the footsteps of Gladiators.
El Djem is far from Tunis, so we started the day early. We drove for over 3 hours on the highway through thick fog till we got there.
Seeing the Amphitheatre for the first time was amazing, it is bigger than it seems in pictures and I could not wait to get in. We then got a short but informative guided tour and then we had a few hours to roam about by ourselves.
We walked on the open field where the gladiators would have fought, saw the openings where they would bring up exotic animals to fight the gladiators and walked in the underground structures that supported the games.
We then walked up a lot of steps as we through pathway after pathway roaming the halls all the way to the top. From there we got a great view of the elliptical space of the Amphitheatre and the steps where the spectators sat.
We then left El Djem to visit the village of Takrouna, and old Berder settlement located on a hill.
Great day and I hope you all enjoy the video!!!!!!!!!
Please find more information on the El Djem here:
