Driving Around Small Town Cassopolis, Michigan in 4k Video
Filmed on Tuesday, May 30 2023, I drive around the village Cassopolis, MI to see what's going on.
Cassopolis, Michigan was founded in 1831 and is the county seat of Cass County. The town was named after Lewis Cass, a prominent American military officer, statesman, and former governor of the Michigan Territory.
Cassopolis played an important role in the development of southwestern Michigan. The town served as a center for trade, agriculture, and transportation. The nearby rivers, especially the Dowagiac River, facilitated the movement of goods and people, contributing to the town's growth.
Cassopolis has a significant connection to the Underground Railroad. The town's location made it a strategic stop on the route to Canada, and local abolitionists provided support and refuge to freedom seekers. The Underground Railroad Society of Cass County preserves and promotes this important aspect of Cassopolis' history.
Cassopolis has a rich cultural heritage. The Cass County Historical Society operates the Cass County Museum, which showcases the region's history through exhibits and artifacts. The town also boasts several architecturally significant buildings, including the Cass County Courthouse, a stunning example of Second Empire architecture.
Cassopolis has been home to notable individuals throughout its history. One of the most famous residents is Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, who lived in Cassopolis for a short period in the 1850s.
Today, Cassopolis is a thriving community that embraces its historical legacy. The town maintains a small-town atmosphere and is known for its scenic beauty, including nearby Diamond Lake.

Driving Around Small Town Niles, Michigan in 4k Video
Filmed on Monday, October 30 2023, I drive around Niles, MI to see what's going on.
Geographically, Niles is located on the St. Joseph River banks, marking the historical site of the French Fort St. Joseph, established in 1697. This fort's history is rich, having been under the control of France, Britain, Spain, and the United States, thus earning Niles the nickname City of Four Flags.
The city is named after Hezekiah Niles, editor of the Niles Register in Baltimore. Its modern settlement traces back to 1827. Notably, between 1820 and 1865, Niles played a crucial role in the Underground Railroad, aiding slaves in their journey to freedom.
An architectural highlight of Niles is the Chapin Mansion, built by Henry A. Chapin, which has served as the city hall. Niles is also known for its vibrant cultural scene, centered around the Riverfront Park. This park, stretching along the St. Joseph River, is the venue for many city events like the Niles Riverfest, Bluegrass Festival, Hunter Ice Festival, and Apple Festival Parade. It also features a memorial, a public stage, a free skateboard park, playground, and volleyball courts.
The Indiana-Michigan River Valley Trail passes through Niles, offering scenic views of the St. Joseph River. Other parks in Niles include the Saint Joseph River Park, noted for archaeological significance with ongoing excavations revealing artifacts from Fort St. Joseph, and Island Park, situated on an island in the river.
In terms of urban development, Niles received a MEDC Community Development Block Grant in 2003, facilitating significant downtown improvements. The Jerry Tyler Airport, located at the city's edge, hosts the annual Fourth of July celebration.
Near Niles are the Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve, Barron Lake, and the University of Notre Dame, just six miles south in South Bend, Indiana. Lastly, the city marks the northern end of the Indiana-Michigan River Valley Trail, linking it to Mishawaka and South Bend in Indiana.

Hard To Pronounce Michigan Places | Pure Michigan
Have you ever wondered how Michigan was named Michigan? Before colonization, the now Great Lakes State was home to at least eight Native American tribes throughout the land, one of which being the Ojibwe Indians. The Ojibwe were the first people to openly interact with the French in Michigan, trading furs and knowledge of the area for guns and goods. Through translation, the state of Michigan was named after the Ojibwe Indian word “Michigama,” which means “great lake” or “land surrounded by water.”
With this in mind, we invite you to take a watch some Michiganders stumble their way through some uniquely-named destinations found across the Great Lakes State. Test yourself and learn the correct pronunciations here:
Port Sanilac and Harbor Beach - Coastal Towns of the Thumb
Port Sanilac and Harbor Beach are two great coastal towns of the thumb of Michigan which you need to visit. Located along the shores of Lake Huron along M-25, both villages have nice shops and restaurants as well as parks along the the shore. I first visit Port Sanilac to check out some of the history there as well as to get a great view of the town from the breakwater pier. Later in the video I head to Harbor Beach to explore the downtown area, walk out on a pier to look out at the lighthouse away from shore, and eat at Smalley's Bar.

Southwest Michigan Breweries and retro Bowling Alley-Brewery/Cider Experience and Travel Destination
Every Memorial Day Weekend for the past two years we've made a trek out to the lovely shores of Southwest Michigan. Don't ask us why. It was kind of a spur-of-the-moment thing that spawned out of the pandemic. We were desperate to travel. We craved to go to some place new. What we stumbled upon was a place full of greenery, a cool lake breeze, and a multitude of establishments with tasty beverages. Seriously. Southwest Michigan is loaded with breweries, wineries, even a distillery, and all are worth checking out.
So we made a little video with a few of our favorites. Of course, we couldn't fit all our favorite spots into a single video. That'd be overindulgent and egregious. But you can bet your sexy selves there will be a part two to this video at a similar time next year. Cheers!
