5 Best Places to Visit in Normandy | France | Love Is Vacation

5 Best Places to Visit in Normandy

Normandy may look pretty and serene today, but this province on the west coast of France hasn’t always been this way. From the ninth century onwards the region was colonized by the Vikings and took its current name, Normandy, the country of the Northmen. Over the next centuries, many battles were fought between England and France, but the biggest occurred in 1944 when Allied forces wrested it back from Nazi occupiers. As you roam the best places to visit in Normandy, you’ll come across these historic battlefields, as well as magnificent medieval buildings, gorgeous gardens and some pretty great food. Normandy celebrates its food with festivals devoted to such eats as cheese, black pudding and shrimp.

Dieppe - Seine-Maritime - Normandie - France - City Tour

Dieppe is a coastal community in the Arrondissement of Dieppe in the Seine-Maritime department in the Normandy region of northern France. The population stood at 29,080 in 2017.

A port on the English Channel, at the mouth of the Arques river, famous for its scallops, and with a regular ferry service to Newhaven in England, Dieppe also has a popular pebbled beach, a 15th-century castle and the churches of Saint-Jacques and Saint-Remi. The mouth of the Scie river lies in the Canton of Dieppe-Ouest at Hautot-sur-Mer.

The inhabitants of the town of Dieppe are called Dieppois (m) and Dieppoise (f) in French.

First recorded as a small fishing settlement in 1030, Dieppe was an important prize fought over during the Hundred Years' War. Dieppe housed the most advanced French school of cartography in the 16th century. Two of France's best navigators, Michel le Vasseur and his brother Thomas le Vasseur, lived in Dieppe when they were recruited to join the expedition of René Goulaine de Laudonnière which departed Le Havre for Florida on April 20, 1564. The expedition resulted in the construction of Fort Caroline, the first French colony in the New World.[7] Another expedition two years before where Goulaine de Laudonnière was under command of Jean Ribault, a local Huguenot captain, had resulted in the foundation of Charlesfort, now in South Carolina. Dieppe was the premier port of the kingdom in the 17th century. Also, it is important to know that after King Edward VI died, putting an end to a Protestant country in England on July 6th 1553, Knox left England to evade the Catholic-fist of Mary I. Firstly, (under the permission of his friends), he went back to his home country of Scotland, and then after he stayed in Dieppe for a few months, continuing on his tracks he stayed in Geneva meeting one of his influences of John Calvin. On July 23, 1632, 300 colonists heading to New France departed from Dieppe. At the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, Dieppe lost 3,000 of its Huguenot citizens, who fled abroad.

Dieppe was an important target in wartime; the town was largely destroyed by an Anglo-Dutch naval bombardment in 1694. It was rebuilt after 1696 in a typical French classical style by Ventabren, an architect, who gave it its unique feature for a sea port. It was popularised as a seaside resort following the 1824 visit of the widowed Duchess of Berry, daughter-in-law of Charles X. She encouraged the building of the recently renovated municipal theatre, the Petit-Théâtre (1825), associated particularly with Camille Saint-Saëns.

During the later 19th century, Dieppe became popular with English artists as a beach resort. Prominent literary figures such as Arthur Symons loved to keep up with the latest fads of avant-garde France here, and during the season sometimes stayed for weeks on end.

Places to see in ( Dieppe - France )

Places to see in ( Dieppe - France )

Dieppe is the oldest seaside resort in France and a Town of Art and History with numerous places of interest. Its cliffs, beach, old town and fishing and sailing port make it a very popular destination. Overlooking the pebble beach is the Château-Musée de Dieppe which houses an ivory collection and an exhibition on the town's maritime history. Dieppe is an important town on the Normandy coast. It originally developed in the 19th century as a popular tourist destination because it has the closest beach to Paris, although it is now better known for its port.

The town centre has a historical section and although there are few major sights it is pleasant to explore. Much of the town was destroyed by a fire in 1694 so there are not many buildings from the medieval period to be seen and most houses date from the 18th century onwards. Further damage took place in Dieppe during the Second World War. Despite this history, Dieppe has preserved and restored a substantial number of interesting buildings and monuments, even if there is also a good deal of more recent development. So for example on the seafront you can see the Royal Hotel and some historic houses, separated by newer (less attractive) buildings and around the pleasure port on Quai Henri IV there are lots of attractive townhouses.

The Place du Puits Salé is the centre of the old town and a pleasant square to take a coffee break: it is here you can find the Café des Tribunaux which was once a popular haunt with painters and writers including Oscar Wilde when he was in exile, and is in a style we would more commonly associate with Alsace than Normandy. There are quite a lot of interesting stone houses and small squares here in the historic centre of Dieppe. You can also see the churches of Saint-Remi and Saint-Jacques in Dieppe: both are attractive churches, and the Church of Saint-Jacques incorporates a great deal of ornate stonework. One very impressive half-timbered building, built in the 17th century even if it looks older, is the Maison Miffant on Rue d'écosse.

The fishing port of Dieppe, the Quai Duquesne and the Quai Henri IV are pleasant places to stop for a coffee or for lunch at one of the restaurants lining the harbour. There are also several grand townhouses ('hotels') such as the College des Oratoriens and the Hotel d'Anvers, bearing witness to the 19th century glory days in Dieppe, around the two quais.

After exploring the town centre you can continue to the medieval chateau, now home to the Museum of Dieppe. The castle itself dates from the 15th century but has been altered several times so is now quite a variety of disparate styles, but still creates an impressive backdrop to the town. The museum is particularly well-known for its collection of carved ivories from its days as an ivory trading port, and for its art collection which includes works by such well known artists as Braque, Renoir and Delacroix

The beach at Dieppe is a pebble beach at high tide, but a sandy strip emerges at low tide. Behind the beach there is a broad promenade and also a swimming pool in case the sea is too cold. One of the most popular attractions in Dieppe is the Estran Cité de la Mer. This has a very wide range of models and exhibits that explain everything you could ever want to know about the history of fishing in the region as well as the natural environment and a small aquarium section.

If you stroll through the historic region of Dieppe called Le Pollet, itself an interesting part of the town, you can continue to see the Church of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours (or you can drive to the church). The church was built on the cliffs to the east of Dieppe in the 1870's as a centre for pilgrims but is now a centre dedicated to sailors who have lost their lives at sea. After admiring the extensive views across the town and beach from the chapel you can go inside and see numerous plaques and tributes to the sailors.

( Dieppe - France ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Dieppe . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Dieppe - France
