Incredible Egypt - Discover the thousand-year-old monasteries of the Wadi Natrun desert.

#Egypt #Copts #ScetisDesert #Monasteries #WadiNatrun

Today, we leave Alexandria to visit a little known region of Egypt, the Wadi Natrun. Few tourists go there, but it is there that we find the oldest monasteries, still in activity, in the world. We will visit four of them, the Monastery of Baramous, the Monastery of the Syrians (Deir Suriani), the Monastery of Mar Bishoi and the Monastery of St. Macarius.

0:27 Introduction
0:47 Departure to Wadi Natrun
1:35 Visit to the Monastery of Baramous
3:53 En route to other monasteries
4:18 Stop at the Monastery of the Syrians (Deir Suriani)
6:51 Visit to the Monastery of St. Bischoi
9:24 Last stop at the Monastery of Saint Macarius the Great
11:42 Back to Alexandria

1. Monastery of Baramous:

This is the northernmost of the monasteries of Wadi Natrun. It occupies the place where the oldest monastic community in Wadi al-Natrun was founded. The Arabic name Baramous is a transliteration of the Coptic Pa-Romeos, that of the Romans, probably referring to the two saints and children of the Roman Emperor Valentinian I (364-357), Maximus and Domitius, whom Saint Macarius received and consecrated here.

The main church of the monastery is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and its nave presents scenes from her life such as the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Nativity. The keep of the monastery is the oldest existing keep in Wadi Natroun and probably dates from the 9th century.

2. Monastery of the Syrians (Deir Suriani):

Founded in the 6th century, the Monastery of the Syrians or Deir al-Surian is an important Coptic monastery located five hundred meters northwest of the Monastery of Saint Bishoi. The monastery was occupied by Syrian (Syriac) monks from the 8th century (hence its name). Since the 16th century, it is again occupied by Coptic monks. It is one of the places in which the novel The Sign by Raymond Khouri takes place.

3. Monastery of St. Bischoi:

The Monastery of Saint Bischoi (also spelled Bishoy or Pshoi) is one of the most famous monasteries of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria. Saint Bischoi would have founded this monastery in the 4th century. On December 13, 84, Pope Joseph I of Alexandria granted Pishoy's wishes and transferred his body there along with that of Paul of Tammah. Today, both bodies rest in the main church of the monastery. Pope Shenouda III of Alexandria is also buried there.

The monastery has five churches, of which the main one is named Bischoi. The other churches are named after the Virgin Mary, Abaskhiron the soldier, Saint George and the Archangel Michael. The monastery is surrounded by a keep, which was built in the fifth century to protect the monastery from attacks by the Berbers.

4. Monastery of St. Macarius :

The Monastery of St. Macarius of Shete or Deir Amba Makar is the largest of the four monasteries visited. It was completely renovated in 1969. The building was built in the 4th century to protect the monks and religious from the Berber hordes. The building preserves the relics of St. Macarius the Great, but also of St. Macarius of Alexandria and Bishop Macarius and houses the Chapel of the 49 Martyrs, 49 monks massacred during a Berber attack in 444.

The monastery has five hundred hectares of land, cultivated by seven hundred people. They also practice breeding. The monks numbered one hundred and thirty, including ten pharmacists, ten doctors and fourteen engineers. This religious complex includes a hospital, a pharmacy and a modern printing house. It operates as a real agricultural enterprise.

The surrounding nature is also an attraction for domestic and international tourists. Portuguese Bridge is found near the famous Debra Libanos Monastery of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Debre Libanos Travel Vlog

Lying 100km north of Addis Ababa is the impressive town of Debre Libanos.

It is comprised of Monasteries, beautiful mountains, country side scenery, the beautiful Nile Gorge with its abundant endemic bird life and Gelada baboons and last but not least the famed ‘Portuguese Bridge’ built in the 1890s. I would recommend you to visit Debre Libanos next time you are in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia Tour 2015 (Addias Ababa-Debre Libanos) Part 2

Ethiopia, officially known as the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, is a country located in the Horn of Africa. It is bordered by Eritrea to the north and northeast, Djibouti and Somalia to the east, Sudan and South Sudan to the west, and Kenya to the south. With about 87.9 million inhabitants, Ethiopia is the most populous landlocked country in the world, as well as the second-most populated nation on the African continent. It occupies a total area of 1,100,000 square kilometres (420,000 sq mi), and its capital and largest city is Addis Ababa.
Some of the oldest evidence for modern humans is found in Ethiopia, which is widely considered the region from which Homo sapiens first set out for the Middle East and points beyond. Tracing its roots to the 2nd millennium BC, Ethiopia was a monarchy for most of its history. During the first centuries of the Common Era the Kingdom of Aksum maintained a unified civilization in the region.
Ethiopia derived prestige for its uniquely successful military resistance during the late 19th-century Scramble for Africa, and subsequently many African nations adopted the colors of Ethiopia's flag following their independence. Ethiopia was the only African country to defeat a European colonial power and retain its sovereignty as an independent country. It was the first independent African member of the 20th-century League of Nations and the UN. In 1974, at the end of Haile Selassie's reign, power fell to a communist military junta known as the Derg, backed by the Soviet Union, until it was defeated by the EPRDF, which has ruled since about the time of the collapse of the USSR in 1991.
Ethiopia is a multilingual society with around 80 ethnic groups, with the two largest being the Oromo and the Amhara. It is the origin of the coffee bean. Ethiopia is a land of natural contrasts; with its vast fertile West, jungles, and numerous rivers, the world's hottest settlement of Dallol in its north, Africa's largest continuous mountain ranges and the largest cave in Africa at Sof Omar. Ethiopia has the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Africa. Ethiopia's ancient Ge'ez script, also known as Ethiopic, is one of the oldest alphabets still in use in the world. It shares many similarities with the Armenian alphabet. The Ethiopian calendar, which is seven years and about three months behind the Gregorian calendar, co-exists alongside the Oromo calendar. A majority of the population is Christian and a third is Muslim; the country is the site of the Hijrah to Abyssinia and the oldest Muslim settlement in Africa at Negash. A substantial population of Ethiopian Jews, known as Beta Israel, resided in Ethiopia until the 1980s but most of them have since gradually emigrated to Israel.
Ethiopia is one of the founding members of the UN, the Group of 24 (G-24), the Non-Aligned Movement, G-77 and the Organisation of African Unity, with Addis Ababa serving as the headquarters of the African Union, the Pan African Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the UNECA, African Aviation Training HQ, the African Standby Force and much of global NGOs focused on Africa. Despite being the main source of the Nile, the longest river on earth, Ethiopia underwent a series of famines in the 1980s, exacerbated by civil wars and adverse geopolitics. The country has begun to recover recently, and it now has the largest economy by GDP in East Africa and Central Africa. According to Global Fire Power, Ethiopia also has the 40th most powerful military in the world.Wikipedia

This is my Failed Ethiopian Barber Experience 🇪🇹 vA 45

I walk around Piassa in search of a barber, but as soon as I dive into the narrow streets, everyone is terrified of my camera. Finally, I find some people to help me find a barber, but sadly, my guides were not genuine... I could hear them talking about how much they should charge me, during a big part of the haircut...
