S1 – Ep 265 – Daniёlskuil – A Little Mining Town in the Green Kalahari!
It was another fantastic gravel road we took to get to Daniёlskuil. So much wildlife to be seen and enjoyed. With the rain the road was a little slippery in some spots, but the Kwid managed just fine. As we drove into this little mining town we were surprised to see that it was not quite as little as we thought! Immediately we saw the old Dutch Reformed Church and the old Police Station which we had to explore. Then it was the rest of the town. Interesting to find out that it is in the Green Kalahari, something I didn’t even know existed. I was seriously amazed at the beautiful houses and how neat the town was. It was a good visit. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #danielskuil #greenkalahari

S1 – Ep 481 – Pniёl, Western Cape!
We were excited to visit Pniёl in the Western Cape, not only because of its incredible history but also because it marks our 500th video. After spending a longer time at home between trips than usual, we thoroughly enjoyed exploring the fascinating places in Pniёl and meeting the amazing people there. The beautiful location of the village, which is surrounded by the magnificent Simonsberg and Groot Drakenstein mountains, along with its historic church and the nearby Wine Route, make it a truly remarkable destination. We are so glad we chose to visit Pniёl. #DustBugs #dustbugstravel #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #westerncape #pniel

Rainy season extreme weather: rain and thunderstorms all over South Africa, part 2
Rainy season extreme weather: rain and thunderstorms all over South Africa: Pretoria, Williston and Danielskuil in Northern Cape, Gariep Dam and a bit of Windhoek in Namibia. Part 2.
#SouthAfricaExtremeWeather #RainySeasonAfrica #AfricaThunderstorms
Most of South Africa is a summer rainfall area, November to March, while the Western Cape Province receives most of its rain during winter, May to August. Over most of South Africa, there is a definite rainfall pattern with rainfall increasing from west to east.
This is illustrated by the yearly rainfall difference between Port Nolloth on the west coast, 50 mm and Richards Bay, 1000 mm at the same latitude on the east coast. The interior plateau, the eastern Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga Provinces receive almost all its rain as thunderstorms (convective rains).
These convective rains develop because all these areas have enough heat in summer. In short, this warm moist air rises, cools down, then condensates and precipitates as thunderstorms. In the western part of South Africa, the rainfall is low because there is not enough moisture in the atmosphere for convective rains. Also, there is no significant orographic rain effect in the mountains along the western escarpment.
This is because air from the cold sea current do not hold most moisture and the coastal winds blow parallel to the mountains. Orographic rain is formed when moist winds are forced up the side of a mountain.
