Awasa
Awassa (Amharic: አዋሳ, also spelled Awasa or Hawassa) is a city in Ethiopia, on the shores of Lake Awasa in the Great Rift Valley. It is located 273 km (170 mi) south of Addis Ababa via Bishoftu, 130 km (81 mi) east of Sodo, and 75 km (47 mi) north of Dilla. The town serves as the capital of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region, and is a special zone of this region. It lies on the Trans-African Highway 4 Cairo-Cape Town, and has a latitude and longitude of 7°3′N 38°28′ECoordinates: 7°3′N 38°28′E and an elevation of 1,708 meters (5,604 ft) above sea level. Its name comes from a Sidamic word meaning wide body of water.
Awasa was capital of the former Sidamo Province from about 1978 until the province was abolished with the adoption of the 1995 Constitution. This city is home to Hawassa University (which includes Wondo Genet College of Forestry and Natural Resources, an Agricultural College, the Main Campus, and a Health Sciences College), Awasa Adventist College, and a major market. The city is served by Awasa Airport (ICAO code HALA, IATA AWA), opened in 1988. Postal service is provided by the main branch; electricity and telephone service are also available.[1] Important local attractions include the St. Gabriel Church and the Awassa Kenema Stadium. Fishing is a major local industry.
Hawassa is a young, 56 years old, city established with master plan in Ethiopia. Hawassa can be considered as one of the best developed cities in Ethiopia.

Southern Ethiopia – Tribal Lands and Primeval People
Joseph’s adventure begins along the shores of Lake Abaya and Chamo, two of the lakes of the 2,400 mile Rift Valley where modern man is said to have originated. After appreciating the lakes’ fishermen, birds, crocodiles and hippos, he travels on roads that cross stretches of dry savannah and are bordered by struggling forests into the Lower Omo Valley. In the valley he has close encounters with the Konso, Hamer and Mursi people, mostly nomadic tribal people who still live untouched by modern conveniences and comforts. In the towns, markets and tribal camps he meets the people and shares in their ancient customs and ceremonies. Facing cultural obstacles and personal challenges, in this episode Joseph presents an honest look at prehistoric cultures caught in transition.
